I am a twenty-something year old born and raised and currently live in San Francisco, California. I am a first-time dog owner and I am a mommy to one (and my first) male Pembroke Welsh Corgi by the name of Bailey...
Bailey was born in Northern California on January 21st, 2008 (an Aquarius - according to doggy astrology, Bailey will be social, a free spirit, quirky, smart, and maybe a rebel!!!). His mommy was a red-headed tri-colored corgi and his daddy Cooper was a red and white corgi. Bailey's fur is much more golden than an ordinary red/white. He gives credit to his parents for that.
Bailey came home on 3/15/08, on a lovely 3 hour drive from Corning, CA. I still remember that day vividly!
Bailey loves meaty treats, the smell of pizza or any other baked carbohydrates (example: french bread!!) , stuffed animals with squeakers, squeaky balls, tug-o-war, wrestling, drinking water, bossing puppies around, peeing on other dogs' poop, doing tricks, going to the dogpark, meeting new people, learning new tricks, exploring, sleeping, and barking too.
Bailey is VERY social and expects every moving thing within a 20 feet radius to say hello to him. If you do not, he will jump on you and insist you pet him. He loves affection from strangers but appears to be embarassed if I display affection to him in public. With dogs, he loves to wrestle, and chase ball-crazy dogs who chase balls. He also loves interuppting picnics at the park, rolling in who-knows-what, and swimming (he's the cutest swimmer too).
We waited for our corgi for quite some time. We just got her at the end of feb. shes fantastic! she's our first corgi also. How EXCITING! you'll have to fill us in when you get your new pup!
Thanks for the nice comment on Lola's pic!
Thanks for joining my group! But, this group is going to have a serious purpose....we must all figure out our craft from corgi hair so we can become billionaires!!!
Karen,
You need someone to take pictures of YOU when you first get your hands on him. I'm sure the look will be priceless. I'll bet that you hardly get a wink of sleep tomorrow nite.
Hey Karen, I was thinking of you and your big weekend!! I just wanted to stop in and say hi and WOO HOO... because it's almost time for Bailey to come home!! Have a blast!! :-)
Tracie
24 hours! Good grief, I couldn't get to sleep last night, much less tonight. Thank you, hope you have a safe trip tomorrow also. Already got all the stuff in the car just going to leave from work this evening. =) Lol, I've gone complete nuts, but I am not caring hehehe! Will take lots of pictures, hope to see lots of pictures from you too! Let us know how everything goes! Take care!
I just use it as a chew toy. Sometimes I run cold water over it, which he seems to like. Congrats on your new puppy! He is so sweet! Betcha cant wait to bring him home!
I really want another pup.... but my husband wants one even more, which scares me... so I haven't told him that I want another one. Anyways, the reason I am telling you this, is because we have the opportunity to get Bailey's long lost twin. Bailey has such a sweet face, but I dont know that I could handle another one right now.
Hahaha you sound like me. I didn't realize how many toys I had for Baxter until I put them all together in his toy box. I had bought one here, a few there, couple of more here. The storage box is about full! LOL! Oh well I am sure he will decimate some of them. Got little Bailey's name plate in the kitchen hehehe. I work in supply at the local hospital. We get our IV fluids from the Baxter company. I have thought more than once cutting the name off one of the empty boxes and putting it on his crate or his toy box. =) I'm sure I'll end up doing that LOL.
Oh yes, we throw the empty boxes out for recycling anyway, I just keep forgetting to do it before we toss them lol, want to get one of the big baxter labels hehe. Yep I bet you'll be able to find a bailey's label as well! =) Mmmm, loves me some baileys irish cream. And absolutely got to have a wide variety of treats and toys to find out what they like! Yes, that sounds like a great excuse! LOL
I know what you mean, my page has been in the background too! Lol, I keep checking...can't stand it. Can't stand how long this week has been at work either! Ugh, hahah. Today has been pretty slow...of course...the clock continues to torture me. I'm sure it is torturing you as well. Well about an hour and 45 minutes to go...hopefully it will whiz on by. Oh well, just got an order from upstairs to fill...back to work for me! =D
Yep hard to believe...bet we will both have little fuzz balls in our arms this time tomorrow I'll bet. =) It certainly has felt like an extremely long wait...but here it is! Um..tomorrow! But very close now. =D Well, I am going to finish up and get the heck out of here and on my way shortly. Have a safe trip! Give Bailey a gentle squeeze and a pat on the head for me!
WOO HOO!! Welcome Home Bailey!!!! Look at that face!!! Karen he is an absolute doll!! I see he has his own bachelor pad? What a lucky boy! Congrats on finally bringing him home. I can't wait to hear how he is doing... looks like he did great in the car and had a bath already too. Hopefully he sleeps well for you tonight. :-)
Welcome home Bailey! Aren't you just a cutie! I'm gonna go check out your pictures and videos now! Congrats Karen! Glad you made it back with your bundle safe and sound! =D
The not so secret is a squirt of Wild Salmon Oil in his food, once a day. Guaranteed to bring out the shine. Also to highlight the red and adds a little bit of fiber to the diet (helps with soft poos also), add a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin (not the pie filling) to the food. I buy the cans and stuff Timmys kong with it as a dessert.
You sure do have a handsome boy, can't wait to see him in a few months. Keep up the good work. Do you have someone that comes in during the day to play with him? or are you one of the lucky ones that can work from home?
Yeah, you need to let your boss know that you can accomplish a lot more from home since you're not worrying about Bailey!!! Besides, I thought that it was the up and coming thing, working from home, better for the environment, and easier on the pocket book considering the price of gas today.
Give him a hug and extra kisses from us, when you see him tonight.
winnie got better on her own. she was more docile for a few days and then one morning she had stopped with the snorting and woke up with twice the energy (which we >loved<) If it had continued for over a week i would have gone in, and i did call the vets office and they said if it is a cold there is nothing i can do but let it run its course. they said if she got worse or didn't improve to bring her in.
Hi Karen & Bailey, Where did you get Bailey? Parker's (the red/white) mother is a tri named Bailey! I got P & P in Corning, CA. Anyway, the running waters and eyes are normal...P & P had the same problem and was fine after a few weeks. As for the food, GRADUALLY: Replace 1/8 Cup of the “old” food with 1/8 Cup of “new” food in your dog’s bowl the first day. Continue replacing an additional 1/8 Cup of “old” food with “new” each day until the transition is complete (over 1-2 weeks).
I am typing this message on phone so please excuse errors. I am so excited! Parker is Bailey's uncle. I think Parker's dad 's name...will check 2night. Parker is a GREAT dog! Very sweet, loving & gentle. Parker's health is good...just normal stuff. We are so excited to have found a relative!!
So he's a party boy hua? Play's till he konks out... too cute. I remember I used to actually sort of miss Emmy when she took so many naps as a puppy.. I was often tempted to wake her because I wanted to play, but she was too pooped. I just noticed a cat in one of your pics. Is it your cat? How is Bailey doing with it? (My cat HATES Emmy, but all Emmy wants to do is play!) LOL
Emmy says hi to Bailey - give him a kiss for us!
Bailey! you're so adorable. Welcome home. I am sure you will grow up as a healthy and happy boy. You have cute chuuby feet, like wearing white socks :)
You're actually going to make me admit to this aren't you? Yes, Emmy is a poop eater too, but don't let the word get out - LOL. She actually just started this winter.. apparently they must be better frozen - Gross! In any case it ia a REALLY hard habit to break, especially if he is using potty pads in the house while you are at work. There is a powder you can buy from the vet (The one mine sells is called "Forbid") to sprinkle on their food, or you can also use meat tenderizer. These are supposed to be fine going in, but effect the "coming out" in such a way that dogs hate the taste. You are supposed to be able to use it for a week and they will learn not to eat their poop, but it did not work with Emmy. I have to pick up her poop from the back yard quickly, or it becomes a snack. (If I can't be out there with her, we have a don't ask don't tell policy and I pretend that I don't know what is happening while she is out there.) Sorry your baby also picked up this nasty habit. :-( He might have learned it from his mom cleaning their den / bed when he was teeny. Kisses from Emmy.. good luck!
LOL yes sorry I havent been in touch. Little Bax has kept me busy busy. I went back to work all day today, worked half a day yesterday. It was hard leaving the little guy. Though I come home at lunch to check in on him. My mother is puppy sitting him during the day, she has fallen head over heels for the him. Which is hilarious in itself and something I didn't see coming. =) How's little Bailey? Hope he is doing well. Baxter is spoiled rotten already. He enjoys his naps still. He'll be playing and having a good time then he'll get tired and just fall over. And it would seem in true corgi tradition he loves FOOD! Lol, I think I should have named him hoover because he has vacuumed out all the corners of the kitchen looking for any little morsel that may have fallen. Loves the catfood, got to keep that up when he is romping about. He's very good at sniffing out the grub hehe, if it is at ground level he shall find it.
Hahah my mom wasn't thrilled at all when I first told her I was getting him. But as the time got closer I noticed her getting excited about him lol, and well by the time i brought him home she just fell head over heels for him hehe. Potty training is hit and miss for me also. He is very good about his crate, when I put him in or entice him in with a little treat he is very quite and behaved. He only had one accident in the crate so far but that was my fault because he had quite a bit to drink that morning and I didn't get him out quick enough after his nap to get him outside. When I do get him outside he is very good about going, however its still all up to the timing when he's out playing knowing when I should take him out again. And that has resulted in a few misses hehe. But I still carry him outside because he gets distracted easily and doesn't always listen to me when I ask him to come. Must be that corgi stubborness showing through lol. Oh and the down command is a bit lost on baxter too hehe, he's managed the sit pretty well but down he's like "but I am down" LOL. I'm sure they will learn though as you say they are very smart, just got to be repetition on our parts! =) I'm sure they'll have us trained soon.
Ah yes, well at least I know the come when called thing is not exclusive to just the bax man. I'm sure the house training shall happen eventually. I spoke too soon last night when I talked about how good he was in his crate. *grumble* He had way too many naps yesterday and last night well he was just wide awake after a couple hours sleep. I woke up to him being much louder than usual and went to check him and yep he peed in the crate. So had to clean all that up and by that time he was ready to play, so he grumbled some more when I put him back in but was okay until about 4 this morning when he had to go potty again. Sigh...needless to say Nicole hasn't got much sleep. Ah well, he didnt get to go outside yesterday except for potty because it was raining terribly so I'm hoping once we can get outside and play we will run those little legs down for bedtime =) Ah yes cardboard, I think they must have a thing for cardboard hehehe. Oh and Bailey looks so sweet, I couldnt resist cuddling him hehe. Baxter weighed 6lbs 6 oz when I took him to the vet monday. He's got a pudgy little freckled belly. =D
Thanks for the comment to my little Eowyn! Your Bailey is adorable! I remember when I first got Eowyn, I was so busy too, with the potty training and the playing and the making sure she didn't get into anything. =D They're a bundle of cuteness and quite a handful.
<3 I hope you and Bailey are having fun!
Hi Karen and Bailey! Yes again I must reitterate how great it is to have someone else going through puppy hood so that we can share experiences. I was glad to learn this wasn't an usual experience with the nipping, though sorry you're going through it too. Usually baxter is a really sweet pup, I think part of it was that he had slept more than normal today and was a bit more wound up than usual when I got home this afternoon. I hope it was an isolated incident but I am going to work to make sure it doesn't happen again. =) They do try and test their boundaries. I really want to get him signed up for a puppy class, unfortunately there are none in the local area, but I will drive if I have to, I know this will be a big help for the both of us. Oh and congrats on the half ear up! =) I bet he looks soo cute!
Hi Karen & Bailey,
Well, I'm not surprised that you've never heard of Ben Lomond. It's a very small town in the mountains btwn San Jose and Santa Cruz. We're about 1 1/2 hours South of you.
Thanks so much, I appreciate your help. =) I may indeed have a question or two for your trainer when you start your classes. I hope they go well, I want the socialization for baxter as well. He is doing well with his potty training, but I would like to be able to keep his attention and have him come when called no matter what interesting thing he sees somewhere else. It is good to hear they do it on saturdays or sundays once a week as I could definitely work with that. I may give them a call this afternoon and find out their schedule at petsmart. And I swear, he is bigger everytime I let him out of his crate. LOL, they grow up too fast. =)
That is exactly what Baxter does. Inside he's an entirely different dog than when he is outside. Which he loves being outside, but he is convinced that he is free to do as he pleases once outside. Yeah I need to start carrying treats outside with me so that he will relate something positive with coming to me when I call. He has started going to the door to be let out to potty, not every time, but I think he is picking it up. Yeah if i am not there at the time he pottys in the house to catch him in the act and pick him up and rush him outside, i just clean it up and go on. Yep they will certainly learn, just takes a bit of time. =D
Thanks for your compliment Karen. Bailey is so sweet looking. I want another corgi. We'll see. Right now my hands are full with the 2 special needs dogs I have. Take care.
I don't use any physical punishment that the dog will associate or interpret as me just being mean. The spray bottle may be the least offensive, but it still is me "coming at the dog" to do something physically unpleasant. I believe these methods break down the longer term trust and bond between dog and owner, though they may be effective in the short run.
I prefer punishments which remove desired objects and make the dog want to please you to get them back. Desired objects are food, toys, and your attention/affection. For very young puppies, saying "No" and turning your back on them (removing your attention) is a strong enough punishment for them to stop what they are doing. With the pants, shirts and skin biting, I would use the "Yoowwww!", give him a serious look, and then turn away or even walk out of the room. When the pup calms down, then say "Good boy" or "Good Sit" (if he calms and sits).
The nipping is normal puppy play behavior and herding dogs can be especially difficult to teach bite inhibition. Charlie took several weeks to recognize and remember that nipping hurts human skin. He bit softer and softer and softer, and I kept yelping and ignoring, until he finally seemed to think "Well you just have such wimpy sensitive skin that I won't even play bite you at all!" Success!
Good luck! Puppies are a lot of work, but the cuteness, love and loyalty are a tremedous payback.
Yes, I'll look forward to hearing how you progress with the nipping! Also if you have taught "Sit!", work on it until Bailey sits every time. (If you haven't taught Sit, get started! LOL) He can't bite you and sit at the same time. : - )
Oh yes, the nipping is definitely a puppy play thing. He is still very young and just doesn't understand yet that his instinct to nip doesn't make you as happy as it makes him. He'll get it. : - )
Congrats on the Sit and Wait and OK!
I can get most untrained dogs and puppies I've never met before to learn Down within 5 minutes. It took Charlie 3 days to get it. Ok, so he's not the sharpest pencil in the box, but he tries hard. LOL I think it's a short-legged Corgi thing.
You reminded me how difficult Down was (once they do figure things out they're great). I pulled this video I found several months ago, with a woman trainer trying to get a Corgi to Down. It's funny they posted it because the woman fails at getting the dog down and calls him a "Welsh Pembroke Corgi" twice. Wonder how she does with "Danes Great"? The dog acts exactly like Charlie did for 3 days before he figured it out.
Yeah! Congrats on the success on getting Bailey to figure out "Down". It's such a rewarding feeling when they learn a new command. : - ) Keep up the good work!
Hi Karen! Hi Bailey - look at your big boy ears!! Woo Hoo!! :-) (Don't tell your mommy but I might just have to cross the country to come and steal you... you are just getting cuter every day!)
Karen, he is an absolute doll... he makes me smile, and I love his hippo! :-)
Hi there Bailey and Karen! Glad to hear from you, sorry haven't been around as of late, was a busy week...then sadly ended up with a nasty virus this weekend. =( So I've been bed ridden for a couple of days. But think I'm finally on the mend now. Meanwhile lil Bax has been having tons of fun with his 'grandma' and 'grandpa' while I've not been able to play with him. I've got to get some pictures of him, he has changed so much as well. The snapping thing is going much better. He hasn't snapped at me since that one incident. And he is very responsive when I give him a firm 'no' or 'no bite'. He still will bite occasionally when he is playing, he gets caught up in the moment. I've just been keeping it consistent with the 'no bites' and ignoring him and it is progressing quite well happy to say. =) Still have yet to contact a puppy class, there are a couple of options, one that is about an hour away and then the petsmart thats just a little further. Going to try and get in touch with them next week and find out some dates and times and prices. If I may ask how much is Baileys class at Petsmart? He's starting next week right? I'm excited for him! =)
Cool, thats not bad at all, yeah hopefully they won't vary from petsmart to petsmart. Haha sounds like you and Bailey did have a busy weekend. Bet he is sleepin on his back with his feet in the air hehe. Glad you both had a great time. =) I posted some pictures of Baxter today and a little video of him doing his tricks for his cheerios. He loooves his cheerios! Hope you have a great week as well!
Hi Karen. Just wanted to drop in and say hi. Emmy just had a bath and is drying off in the sun. She sends kisses to her pal Bailey. :-) Hope you had a great weekend!
Hi Karen! How did puppy class go? Hope you had a good week, mine has been busy per the norm. Took Baxter with me to my boyfriend's house this weekend, he had a blast with us and Rosie, his dog. He took some pictures of them and a little video, I'm gonna try to get it to post, its very cute. Anyway, sorry I haven't gotten back to you before now. I taught Bax to speak by basically behaving like a fool in front of him...luckily no one around to hear me hehe. I held the treat out to him and would tell him 'speak' and then I would bark. He caught on to it pretty quickly...its kind of a curse though cuz if he sees you eating anything he won't be quiet hehehe.
