Newly married as of June 7th, my husband and I have decided to add a corgi friend to our family and absolutely can't wait. I'm looking forward to gaining as much knowledge as I can so that I can be a great corgi parent. :)
About My Corgi(s):
Abby joined our family on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. She is a tri-colored Cardigan Welsh Corgi and is LOADS of fun! She's learning things so quickly, and it's just so exciting to have her in our lives. :)
Welcome! My brother also got married on June 7th. Congratulations! Furpants McGee is adorable. Lance is a blue merle caridgan. You will have so much fun with McGee. How old will McGee be when you get him?
aww..how fun. Lance was 14 weeks when we got him. The time goes fast...he is now 2 1/2. Oops sorry I didnt read enough to see McGee is a female. What an exciting time! I dont know if you were told this but puppies do better in a smaller area, so they dont seem overwhelmed because they are so little. We kept Lance gated in the kitchen area for awhile. It also helps to house-break them that way. They say that they dont like to soil the area they stay in. Will she be crate trained....it is nice to have them crate trained. Lance is crate trained and it works out well when we travel at stay at hotels.
right on, yea i grew up in brea and now live in tustin with my husband which is also close to v.p. i can't seem to leave orange county it's such a beautiful place to live. :)
ziggy is my kitty's name how funny!! his ears are just tooo much!!
Hey Leslie, it is me! The one that wrote you on Youtube who has Dragon Buster the Waving Corgi. Glad to see you joined...sorry didn't get back to you yet....busy day Joy :)
Leslie, I just left you a message on YouTube. I looked at your puppy's picture and you are definitely getting the prettiest. So adorable. I'm obsessed too....hard not to be because they are so cute.
I think you'll have fun on the trip. Weather is cool so be sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket. Steve has some lovely dogs and for the last few years has been doing great in the show ring. His place is beautifully located and I hope to get up there sometime to visit his kennel. My next corgi will be a cardigan; an older dog if I can find one.
Enjoy your trip and relax. It'll be fun to see what a lovely dog she'll grow up to be. Can't wait to see more pictures.
It is a great site and you can learn so much. Big discussions always center on food and behaviorial issues. There's some very knowledgeable breeders, rescuers and trainers on the site and they are all willing to share their opinions. (Sometimes, discussions can become heated, but keep an open mind and you'll come away with some new thoughts and ideas.)
My girlfriend and I are going to visit Steve and Kelly on Wednesday and get a good dose of puppy breath. We'll be sure to give your baby some hugs as well!
Okay, will do. I'll take some pics. I contacted them this weekend at the local AKC show regarding getting an older dog, retired or not showing well, sometime later this year or early next year. I told Kelly about mycorgi also.
Sorry to hear about your husband's medical issues, sure hope that all is well and hopefully it's nothing serious. What a wonderful gift he gave to his sister!
What a beautiful family you all make! judging by Silvia's side of the conversation can I guess that you are coming up to Mckinnliville to get your puppy? congrats! and welcome to my corgi!
I could only imagine how excited you must be! I went with Siliva to the dog show this weekend and meet Steve and a few other breeders, If I wasn't already hooked I would have been then! what made you decide on a cardi? I can't decide on a pem or a cardi. I think I am leaning to a pem. Good luck!
Leslie and Jake,
Here's the pictures I took. You'll see she's not so small any more. Matter of fact she looked as big as the two other girls in her box. What a snuggler, she crawled right up onto my shoulder and just stayed there, didn't even bite. Course that doesn't mean she'll stay that way. She has a little runny left eye, but Steve thinks it's because he of the litter he uses which is a mix of pine and cedar. I think you'll be quite surprised at how well she gets along with everyone and her temperment. I'm jealous!! She's an absolute doll.
Ooops, I sent you two of the same ones. Oh well. The other one isn't very good. I wanted to get a picture of her sitting up, but of course as soon as I went to shoot the picture, she decided to move. By the way she has cute little brown patches on her cheeks and a smooth coat, very soft.
Oh my soul!!!! Can your finger be salvaged or were you talking about your ring? Wow, that is too bad. How is your husband doing. Sorry I have been so long replying...that is amazing that your husband gave his kidney to his sister. I hope he is ok!!! Too bad that you have 2 wait 2 more weeks for your puppy. the only bonus if that maybe the breeder is housetraining him for you and he'll be further along in the process...let's hope. I hope you feel better.
By the way, how did they cut the ring off your finger? I always wonder because mine is on for good (gained weight after), often wondered if I needed surgery what would happen. Do they know what they are doing? Were you scared they would knick you? Hope things improve soon for you too and you can get your baby!!! J/B
That is too bad about your finger and ring. That's a shame where you just got married that your ring is wrecked so soon. When will you get your husband's test results back? I would be worried about the pain too. Let me know how you both are doing. I'll go check your little one now.
I'll praying for good results for Jake's tests. No, the ocean water where we were was warm; it is an inlet and we were only up to our knees. It has been about 80 degrees or so for the past 2 weeks so it is warming up. Now, on the north shore of our island, the water would still be ice cold. I actually prefer it that way, reallly makes you feel alive and cools you down quickly.
Wow, I just caught site of your wedding pictures-you are a stunning couple. They are just beautiful. I hope you have a lifetime of wedded bliss. We are approaching our 5th anniversary soon. Somedays it seems like a miracle LOL and some days it seems like just yesterday. Interesting about time....it is timeless.
I was reading about your hand. Oh my gosh, first your husband and now you. Hopefully everything turns out okay with the tests they ran on your husband. What did you do to sprain your hand? Tennis? or break a fall?
Good thing Petunia won't care if you can only use one hand!! Happy Monday to both of you.
Actually, a lot of the response that pups have depends on your reactions to the sounds and prior exposure to loud noises. They will always be startled, just like you, but coddling is the wrong approach, teaches them there really is something they should be frightened of. I happen to live a few hundred yards from a river and people go down there to shoot guns all the time especially around hunting season, so Timmy has heard loud noises since he was a wee pup.
Bummer about your ring. Have you taken it to a jeweler yet to find out if they can put it back together? I'm pretty sure they can, since it all started out as melted gold. Good thing you don't have to use your left hand for work or something!
Are you driving up on the 17th? Here's hoping that this lovely weather we're having holds out for you. Actually, bad weather this time of year just means that the fog hangs around a little longer than usual! LOL Getting excited, again? I just know you're gonna love that little (?) girl. She really is a doll. She will be so spoiled, I know. Got all your stuff ready?
Here's hoping everything is smooth sailing until you pick up that girl.
Hmm.. right now I have a plastic kennel carrier that is 14.5x16.7x24 and it seems fine for him for short periods. He can stand up and turn around, but he's outgrowing it quickly. It seems like the only concern is the height limit of the crate. How long is the flight for?
Hmm, it's a hard choice. You don't know how she reacts to planes so you don't want to stuff her in the back of a plane and risk fear imprinting, especially since she's going with you for the first time. But on the other hand, yeah she might be uncomfortable. Would it be bad to bring both crates and see where she fits?
Oh no, does that mean that your husband will have to have further surgery to fix the clamp issue? Hopefully not. Sounds like everything else is as it should be, which is great.
Airline regs only state that they have to be able to stand up and turn around. The size you mentioned should be fine. I think she could handle it for short periods of time with no problems. If you have access to one, put a small towel over the crate while in flight and it will help her be more settled and less upset. (sort of den like) Of course that depends on how hot it gets in the cabin, although if she's on the floor it should be cool enough. She is a bit shy, but having you within reach should help her with the unfamiliar location, sounds, and vibrations. Reassure her whenever you can. Only issue is she might get a little sick, make sure she doesn't eat or drink before the first take off and landing. I'm guessing you'll have to change planes at least once. Check with the airline and see if she needs any kind of health certificate to fly "in cabin", I don't think so, but better to be safe than sorry. Also, if you're making several ups and downs, so you might bring her a toy, I recommend the keys from Nylabone to chew on, and a small bottle of water for her. Maybe a couple of small treats (really small). Lastly, make sure you advise the airlines you'll be flying with an "in cabin" pet. Most of them have limitations on the number of "in cabin" pets they will allow. Whew!!!
I also left you some information on the spay/neuter stuff. I'm kind of a nut with making decisions....want all the references, etc. I'm sorry I had Timmy neutered early, I was under the impression that with the smaller breed, orthopedically it wouldn't be a concern, but now I'm dealing with arthritis in a 5 year old hyperactive corgi kid and trying to figure out what I'm gonna do for the next 8-10 years of his life. My bad and we'll live through it. Just feel it might have been different had I waited like I did with my GSD's.
Leslie,
I don't know if you've noticed it, but I did send you a message via MyCorgi. In the very upper left hand corner next to your name should be an envelope (messages) and friend request. Just FYI, sometimes it's easier to do that when you're online, since the only other way I know someone left a message on my page is through my email notification.
Hi Leslie, sorry I'm so late in getting back to you. How is your husband? Did he get his test results back yet? Does he still have pain? I pray for him every day. How is your finger healing?
Yes, a smiling face is very therapeutic; I know it is with me. I was sick, in bed, the other afternoon and Baby Butter (my new nickname) came in and did the wave for me twice). If he knows I'm sick or upset, he'll do the wave on his own or he'll bring me toys. Once I start playing with him I always feel better because it takes my mind off what I am going through. That would be amazing if you had a therapy dog.
It must be so exiting to get a puppy and yours is just too cute. I think if anything happened to my baby, I would want to get one that looks like yours because he is so sweet. The countdown is on. bet you can't sleep as it gets closer....
Take care and thanks for writing. Let me know how you're both doing when you have the chance. J/BB
no worries...we all have other lives than mycorgi.com (maybe except me...i'm fortunate to have a job where i can cruise around the internet as i please) :)
Yes, his results came back, his clamp is poking into his other organs...which is normal as it's a foreign object, but supposedly, it should go away after a year and the body adjusts to it. Jake's a tall guy, and his organs are very large (which is what the surgeon said after the surgery) so, it's nothing life threatening, but the pain comes and goes. I couldn't imagine a sharp, stabbing pain in my side and know there's not much to do about it. We are looking into a small procedure to have it switched with a smaller one, but the surgery was done under his sister's insurance - MediCal (pretty much the crappiest insurance you can have...it's run by the government and she was on disability so that's why this was her insurance company) and unfortunately their view of transplant surgery, whether a donor or receipiant, is after a year, you are cured. His sister is currently in a battle with them to get her anti-rejection meds covered because they're about $1000 a month without insurance!! Can you believe it!! She'll die without them!! It's crazy, the world we live in, I tell you!
Yes, the nights are becoming sleepless...I've been watching the youtube videos of corgis playing and barking and it's funny to watch my cats look around to see where the noise is coming from. I'm excited too, because my baby kitten, Ziggy is about 1, and he sort of grew up around Jakes other sister's dog (half chihuaua, half dachsund)...she'd bring her over a lot and they would play and play and love eachother...my oldest cat, Toby, is sort of an old grumpy kitty so when Ziggy tries to hug him or play, Toby growls and bats him on the head. :( So, I think Ziggy will be happy to make a friend. It's all around such an exciting experience :)
The countdown is on! How exciting. Hope your finger is doing ok and hopefully your husband can get the smaller clamp so he is not in pain. Are you ready for the puppy to come home?
Just wanted to let you know I am headed for a little puppy breath therapy, tomorrow afternoon at Steve's place I will leave my checkbook, However I Will Definantly take my camera with me to get pictures of Petuna! Hope your weekend is going well! And that you and your husband are also doing well1
I've always enjoyed Corgi's but the Cardigan has always been my favorite. Such wonderful little legged dogs :) Who are you getting your lucky puppy from? I remember waiting 7 days to get Regis, longest 7 days of my life!
Oh I've not heard of that breeder before! How exciting! Yes I remember when I was in California, all the corgi's I saw were Pembies. And everywhere I took Regis they were confused by his colors and tail. I loved it, we got stopped everywhere we went. Get ready for a lot of "Oh an Aussie Corgi mix!" And if your pup has blue eyes, get ready for the "Ooh a husky!" Haha. It's fun though, I enjoyed taking him to the out door mall :D
She sounds very sweet! We got Regis from North Carolina, so we had him shipped over to California. So that was why we had to wait a week, it was just too hot to send him over! Oh cats! I love them! I own 3, they are all in California right now- I am getting ready to slowly have them sent to me. I just rescued a kitten the other day, trying to find a name for her right now. I'm trying to find a cool Japanese name, so far we've come up with Shinju, I just think it's cute, LOL. Good luck with your puppy! Anyway, I agree, Cardi's should get more popular. I think that people just don't know they exist! But it's nice knowing that my dog is so unique. I believe that's one reason we always got stopped, no one ever had seen a dog like him! It's so fun!
Are you excited yet??? IN four days you'll be bring her home. Hope everything is going okay at home and that your hand has gotten better. Can't wait to hear how everything went.
She is just the cutest thing. She is going to be one gorgeous little girl! Hope you liked our surprise. Juel took the pictures and then came over so we could upload them.
Timmy and I are going for our walk now. Have a great evening!!
Sorry the pictures are so big, If you give me your address I can email them to you! You are so Lucky to have such a cute love bug! I am so excited for you! oh how I wish I was ready for my puppy now! Can't wait to see you to together! Take care and have a safe travel up!
You won't have to worry at all, I am confident she will adore you! She is such a happy little baby! I am sure that Steve Will give you the same talk he gave me, but the short version is it will take here about two weeks to adjust. I am sure that with all the love you are prepared to give her that she will love you back! All the puppies he has ( he has some from two litters) are very cuddlely!
From what I have seen he has a great set up! It sounds like a Dr Suess book: HEHE. The puppies have been exposed to big dogs, small dogs, ({red dogs, black dogs} ok back to the serious part) cats, chickens, birds, loud noises, tail tugs, ear handling, toenail trimming. and on and on ..... You have Made a very good choice! As someone on this site told me "don't over think it!" Congrats! I don't know what day you are coming but if I am not working and you have spare time, just let me know. I will bring my camera!
there is nothing like a corgi pup! they challenge you while they steal your heart!!! I had a cat who I loved very much, but Spencer is the love of my life!!!
Thanks for the comment, she is such a funny Kitty! When we are out side she follows you around everywhere you go like she is afriad you'll do something neat with out her. I am trying to take pictures of my boyfriend dog and get those loaded but rusty won't sit still ERRR Teenagers! Happy one day left!
