Profile Information:

Hometown:
Lummi Island, WA
About Me:
I live on a small island in WA State. I live in a townhouse in small complex set on 45 acres, we have a lot of open land and a private sandy beach. I work full time 4/10's, Mon-Thurs and have Fri-Sun off. I work on the mainland and take a short ferry ride every day. I do not have a fenced yard so I bring Sophie to work with me. I love the quiet island life. We have bald eagles, peregrine falcons, great northern owls, bunnies, otters and many sea lions along with crows and of course seagulls. I got Sophie Dec 5, 2008. She is the love and light of my life, my constant companion!
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Sophie is sable Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a tail. Born Aug 11, 2008, On Dec 5, 2008 I rescued her from a backyard litter of unsocialized puppies when she was 4 months old. She comes to the office with me every day so she isn't home alone, she has dog friends in our complex (unfortunately they are usually only out on weekends). She loves to run on our beach, jump on rocks and swim! She is sweet, very gentle, timid at times, soulful, funny, independent (stubborn sometimes) and she loves other dogs!
I have:
Pembroke

Hi Carole, thank you for the welcome! It looks like a welcome is in order for you as well. Your corgi is absolutely adorable and your home town looks amazing. I think I need to move there.
  • Erin & Ruckus

I just joined as well, I think we met the welcoming committee :)

Welcome Carole and Sophie! I love your photos - it looks like you live in paradise. I love Sophie's tail. SIdney has his tail too!

Aw geez Carole, I am so sorry that Sophie and SIdney have more in common than their tails. Hip Dysplasia is an awful thing. I'm so glad you caught it early with Sophie. We had no warning with Sidney; his hip just popped out while he was walking down the hall. We were lucky that Sidney is fit and active, so his lower weight and his good musculature should help him heal. Is Sophie getting glucosamine? Out vet recommends Dasuquin chews, and they are a great price at Amazon.com. I was also told I should add plain gelatin mixed with chicken broth to his food; don't know if it will help, but he likes it!

Welcome from Yoda and David! Sophie is lucky to live at a such beautiful place!

    Have a great day!

They probably suggested the FHO surgery, which is what Sidney had. Femoral Head Ostectomy. They remove the head of the femur and turn the ball and socket joint into a floating joint.
Sidney goes back for a follow up appointment later this morning. He also gets his sutures out, so no more e-collar! Yeah! He's not really wanting to use his leg, so we need to get serious about physical therapy. He tries to do some things, like jump on the sofa or do that "toro toro" thing after peeing (where they kick with their back legs to spread their scent around) but then he fails..poor little guy. But his spirits are good, he's "smiling" more now and wants to chase the kitty.

    Hi Carole,

Yes, we are a BIG Corgi family here. When I signed up, I was #17 and look how many we have now. You can get all kinds of helpful ideas from "experts". There's lots to learn about these little critters. I've been told Corgis are like potato chips, you can't just have one. . . .LOL

    Have a great weekend. . .it's 106 degrees here. . . .

Hi Carole, I agree with the "every bite" concept. Sophie LOVES her food. She gobbles! We took her to the U of Florida when she was abotu 11 months (at the direction of our vet) and the chief of ortho at the university saw her. He did NOT recommend hip replacement either. He said a lot of vets won't do it on dogs with such short legs. He did recommend the FHO but wanted us to wait until she was older. Well, she is older now (3 in Nov.) but seems to be doing very well so far. We had our vet give her a series of Adequan injections and it was amazing what a difference they made. I had discussed this with the vet at the University and he also recommended them. But, thanks again for the pumpkin tip. I know she will love it and so will Max. Good luck with your Sophie. She is really a beauty! I showed my husband and the first thing he noticed was her tail! We've always wanted a Corgi with a tail!

    Love the new profile pic!

Hi Carole and Sophie! Sidney is not wanting to walk too far. I have to make him walk slow so he steps on his bad leg. It's sad, but I have to hope he'll get better as time passes. He's only 4 weeks post-surgery. He's in fine spirits but I can tell he misses our walks.

Sophie, I just love looking at your photos. You have the sweetest face and kindest eyes. No wonder your mommy is so devoted to you. Such friends are wonderful.

Hi Carole & Sophie! Thank you so much for the warm welcome. We're very happy to be new members here! Sophie is so adorable... and so lucky to have been rescued by you. Yes, it's so nice to take Picasso to work with me everyday...
  • Wesley Belcheer

Thank you. I cant believe you got that from the pictures of her but your right. She is our sweet sensitive girl. She is too nice to our puppy, sweeter than she was to her own.
  • Wesley Belcheer

Sophie looks like Daisy with a different coat on.
  • lwlba

    thakns for the welcome!

I actually use Zukes but that's good as just a treat. He doesn't like them for training. To help with training we started to use Pet Botanics Rolled Meat. We cut it up really small and he really reacts to it. I know of the island you live on. I've never been there before but i've been really close just outside bellingham area.

By the way, you're Sophie is adorable. I hope my Leo grows up to be as happy as your Sophie appears to be.

We are in Eastern Washington, about 30 mins from Idaho border. But my parents live in Washougal, Washington, just east of Vancouver, and they had just a skiff of snow this morning. It melted off faster than ours. Although all we have left is the snowballs from the snowman.
