About My Corgi(s):
http://www.tumblr.com/blog/snickmom Follow Snickers and friends!
Snickers is a red head tri pemmie, 23 lbs, Dolly is a recently adopted corgi/peke/ewok mix same size and age as Snickers (about 4 yrs old). We also have an English Springer Spaniel who loves to play with the little ones.
We decided to get a corgi because we knew other people who had them and they were neat dogs. Jack Spaniels was 5 years old, when we decided to get a corgi pup for him to play with because our older dog did not have the energy anymore. I did not find a puppy in my area that was in my budget, but my older son was visiting my mom in Missouri so I started searching the web in that area. I found a promising breeder with some cute tri pemmies for sale. I sent an email to my mom asking if they could go look. The next thing I know, I get a call from my son, he said they were in the car, on the way, and were they just supposed to look? Snickers wrapped him around her little paw and he brought her back to my mom's for a week before she flew home in a little carrier under the airline seat. My younger son had to leave for Boy Scout summer camp the morning before his brother and new puppy flew in. Poor kid had to wait a week to hug his new pup. It helped to have envious friends around when they got off the bus! Snickers was raised with children and LOVED them. If we took her to the park and she saw a child she would go nuts! We knew nothing about corgis or training dogs like a corgi and so we made a few mistakes that we are now trying to correct. She has always been a barrel of laughs but never cuddly or comfortable around strangers. She is starting to be a much nicer dog now. More about her accomplishments later.
In the mean time, my mom had taken in Dolly from a rescue organization. Dolly has been living on a ranch where she had acres of land to run around on. Except for teaching her not to leave the property, to bark (I don’t like) when she wanted a biscuit and to sleep on the furniture (I don’t like), she has had no training at all. My mom developed health problems this summer and decided she couldn’t keep Dolly (after a baby duck mysteriously died and the hurricane, etc). Fortunately, my older son was visiting and was able to drive Dolly home (this is getting to be a habit). His girlfriend loves Dolly to pieces and Dolly will be theirs when they can move to a place that allows dogs. Dolly has been getting trained and now knows simple commands like sit, down, fist bump and belly rubs (lay on your back), she stays off the furniture and doesn’t dart out the door, and now we can ever let her come in the front yard with us to get the mail without her running off! She is the most laid back dog you can imagine. She acts like a rag doll and will let you put her in any position. She made friends with Snickers and Jack right away, although it took a while before Snickers figured out how to play with her, now they are best buds. Dolly does not know how to play with people or toys, but when I get time I work with her and she will chase a small toy a few feet and bring it to her bed for a treat. Dolly has her dew claws and an extra toe on her back feet.
Welcome Snickmom and the whole pack! What cute photos. We're from San Diego, I also like sci-fi, and my hubby is a teacher too! High school history, government and economics.
Welcome to MyCorgi. What q great looking dog family!! I also have 2 boys, but I still have a long way to go with them!! Lol, and I work for the state of TX.
WOW I just saw there are 9,037 members and I'm #16. That tells you how long I've been a member. All you have to do is be yourself. I can't imagine anyone ever being rude here. We're just one BIG family and we're here to help other Corgi families with questions and concerns. . . .
I try to answer back when someone leaves a comment on my page or sends me an e-mail. It helps me keep track of newcomers too. I click on reply after the comment and it takes me to their page.
You can give gifts too by either attaching it to your message or clicking on the Give a Gift icon on the left hand side of your page (usually the last icon). . . . .
You're right. It's very difficult keeping their weight down. I take them for walks, they have a large yard to run and play but it can still be a problem. The only one I have to be especially careful with is Babs. She just doesn't burn the fat like the others do. I have to give her smaller portions too. They are very happy dogs. I think having 5 keeps them active and definitely keep each other company when I'm not here. My brother did his laundry one day and left it on the living room table. Well, when I got home, there were clothes everywhere. They had so much fun throwing clothes all over the place. I couldn't help but laugh when I walked in cause you could see it all over their faces like OH OH, we're in trouble now!!!!! But who could be mad at them. My brother even laughed. He couldn't believe he had that much laundry. They're such fun dogs. I wouldn't be without them.
Thanks for your kind words about L & R. They're great fun. There should be a link under your profile photo marked customize. Just click on that and arrange your page as you want. Have fun. Look forward to seeing your photos!
I really don't remember how I did the page. There are way better ones, that's for sure. I stink at navigating this site, although I've been on it for a long time, and love it. I suggest you write to Sam. I'm sure he'll be able to walk you through it. I believe that all the money from gifts goes to Corgi rescue.
Re. keeping corgi's weight down. I eyeball my guys every day and adjust accordingly. We have lots of fruit trees so they get a lot of "freebies." Some days they get less exercise and time to run around outside. I never give Ricky/Rafa more than a cup of kibble a day, and some healthy snacks during the day; Lucy a half cup.
Thanks so much for the flowers. They brightened up my morning! I was happy to help you get started on your page. I see you've been doing some great work already. This site is addictive.
HAHA, now I need help. I was fooling around with the sticker option and got all these stickers stuck on a photo and can't figure out how to remove them.
PS Your page is filling out nicely. Great to see the photos & videos. You're a quick learn!
