I agree, it's so much fun. We've made a lot of our own back yard equipment too. Coco is a smaller dog - somewhere around 11 inches, but if he's slightly over 11 he will have to jump 12 and I've only trained him at 8. I worked with him some this weekend, and although he can jump 12's, he knocks some of the bars off and just generally tires out faster. He's not a very big Corgi. I'll just keep my fingers crossed for the measurement to come out at 11" or under.
The pic you attached was really nice......the Corgi's coat takes on the appearance of a Husky even....neat.

We are competing AKC so far - but the end of July will be our first time. We practice / belong to a local dog club in Illinois, and it is one price no matter how many dogs you have, to be a member and practice with their equipment. It is the lessons where the money starts to add up. We pay $80 for 6 group lessons (1 hour) per dog. Private lessons run 3 (half hour) sessions for $80. We have been to a couple of competitions at different venues (CPE and NADAC, and AKC) and people have seemed generally nice. I do know what you mean about the stuffiness though.....but that's anywhere you go - some people just aren't much fun. Maybe go to a couple events at different venues to get a feel before committing. It's free to be a spectator, and we have taken Coco on leash just for the exposure so he can get used to the atmoshere and distractions.
