Yeah, that's definitely true. We were at the shelter because my girlfriend lost one of her Chihuahuas. Unfortunately, she is less than a year old, very friendly and trusting, and is super cute with little black and tan Rottweiler markings, so she was most likely snatched. It's sad, but we just hope she is with someone who will treat her well. We're getting her other Chi chipped ASAP now though.
Most shelters will microchip for free or for only 25-30 bucks. It's so worth it. Much better deal than the Pet Insurance they sometime come with, but that's just my opinion.
That's really sad to hear about her Chi. Hopefully a nice family took her in.
Jason, did you get her yet? I know you said after christmas, but maybe you could get them to cut some slack. I got my boy at the APL and brought him home that same afternoon, and I gotta tell ya, I'm a Corgi convert. He's mixed but way too smart for his own good, and a tough on the outside, soft in the middle pussycat. I don't dicipline dogs by hitting them, but even if I did....it would do no good on him. Best to just be angry when he screws up (and he does quite a bit) and ignore him....that is punishment enough.
Jeff: Nope we still have to wait. I've wheedled and begged to the max but they're very strict at this shelter and apparently I don't have the baby fur seal eyes down like Ein does. I couldn't even get her out to play with her yet. In fact, she isn't fixed and the shelter has a small backlog in their clinic, so while I'm pretty confident we'll be able to officially adopt her on Friday morning, we will probably have to wait until early next week before we can take her home. I haven't had enough time with her yet, but she seems very bright and loving so far. She definitely seemed to remember me when I came today and was more friendly than yesterday. I'm probably gonna go tomorrow and Wednesday as well, and I'm sure by the time we have her, the people at the shelter will think I'm a bloody nuisance. :)
Thanks to everybody for the well wishes. This site has quickly become my second biggest internet addiction, just behind flickr. :)
She is a cutie, but I would say she is more of a Pem, than a Cardi at first glance. As for her ears, at her age, they'll stay in that position. Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for ya!
Thanks everybody. I went to visit her one last time before they close for Christmas and she'll be available first thing Friday morning and we're first on the list so it should be pretty much a done deal. The only hitch is that their vet is on vacation so they're having to transport her for spaying. Because of that we don't know when we're going to be able to take her home.
I was basing my guess of cardi mostly on her tail, but I could be mistaken. :)
I'm certainly no expert but I read that the breed standard for CWC's is a prominent breastbone, white at the tip of the tail and mottled feet, which also point outwards rather than straight. PWC's I read, do not have a prominent breastbone and have feet that are straight, and most of the time have docked tails. *shrug*
well, the tails are docked by the breeder, and in the case of this little mixed breed, they most likely did not go to the trouble to dock her. Sid, as a Pem, does have a prominent breastbone and his feet do turn out too. Bruce, my mix, also has the same features.
Went to the shelter to take care of the adoption paperwork and pay the fees. Unfortunately the poor thing is starting to get kennel cough, so they're putting her on meds and we will have first dibs as soon as she is better. :) We got to talk to the girl who was at the front desk when she was brought in, and it's a good thing Ein is built low. Apparently the woman who brought her in grabbed her from the middle of the street after she was nearly run over. The car drove right over the top of her and only missed because of that low corgi body. Talk about close calls...
I hope she gets better soon, Jason! Poor thing needs to get home to you ASAP. When you do, be really careful that she can't get out of an open door or under a fence. Corgis are notorious bolters....believe me, I know!
Jason,
Frasier had the cough a day after we got him home. We had him on meds already, and it lasted about a week, but he got over it. I know it sounds dreadful the way they choke and hack, but it is treatable. Just keep an eye open to avoid pnumonia, and good luck. She's lucky to have found such a loving owner.
Boomer is supposed to be a purebred.. but I think she's got a little of something else going on. Her mother is definitely a purebred, but a recent pic we received of her father looks more like a corgi-shepherd type mix. However she kind of looks like a daschund mix. Just wondering what anybody else thought. She's definitely got the corgi personality 100% though. : )
Well, Boomer isn't purebred, that's for sure. I would say that she has Chihuahua in her, myself. But, as long as you love her, who cares!!!! She is a cute little thing though.
In response to the previous post about Corgi's getting out . . . I didn't realize when we got her, that this was a breed trait. Kitsie's definitely got that Corgi trait! Augh!! Are your Corgi mix's stubborn as well? Kitsie's not too bad.
Bruce is very stubborn and MUST have the last word too. He's very "talky". At dog beach he headed for Mexico and almost got there. Thats when I learned a leash was a must at all times!
Boomer is sooooooooo stubborn! She can never go off a leash.. she is still on a leash sometimes in the house too because she does not listen and will not come when we call her. Needless to say the trainer is coming back over this Friday to work on this some more.
lol - I notice Kitsie's stubbornness comes out more when the temperature reaches below zero. She hates going outside to go potty when it's that cold and I don't blame her. For the most part, however, she has a shepherd temperament; eager to please and very treat motivated. I think we are lucky.
Hillary: Just waiting for the shelter to take care of her kennel cough. I called today and she is looking good, but still not ready to go. As soon as she is good they are going to call us, then we can "officially" adopt her and they will get her spayed and we can take her home.
Ein is finally safe at home. She's still a little woozy from being fixed, but aside from that she seems to be adjusting well. She is very even tempered and loving. I'm so happy she's finally safe with us. Thanks to everyone who sent well wishes, this is a great web community and we're all united by our unique furry little friends. :)
Did anyone see The Dog Whisperer the other day when he had on a Corgi/Shepard mix? She was so cute! I have learned so much from that show and it's funny when I apply some of those things to my dogs....they just are super obedient. It's like they're in shock mommy knows how to be a pack leader! :O)
i believe mine is a chihuahua corgi mix and i'm in love! she was a stray, she is old, but now she's got a home with us ( my husband, 2 kids, 1 phat cat and 1 jack russel terrier mix from the shelter ! )
I heard that Rusco, the dog on "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" is a chihuahua mix. I wondered if he was mixed with corgi, he has such huge ears and his coloring is like a red corgi
It's wonderful to see that other people feel the same way about their pups. Rueben is like a little people friend and is so easy and I love him like I've never loved an animal before. I feel spoiled! There isn't much that he does wrong and I'm being totally serious here. He so loves to please!
I saw a bunch of episodes when I was in PA at the rents, but I don't have cable anymore in NYC - I live off of local stations, NetFlix and the Internet - Victoria is so cool - she tells it like it is - she's cool and great with the dogs - I wish she could help me get Charlie to stop barking at other dogs when he's on his leash - hehehe
Hey there - does anyone gate their pups inside? We're thinking of putting Kitsie in a "safe area" by gating off the kitchen from the living room. My hubby thinks she'll jump over a normal 28-30" high gate. but finding taller ones that fit up to an 8 foot wide opening are hard to come by. any suggestions????
Gracii, how big is Kitsie? a 28-30" gate should be able to hold her since a gate that size was able to contain my yellow lab. If the gate doesn't work, you can always look into building one yourselves if anyone is crafty.
My husband is worried that she'll jump over a 30" gate, b/c she jumped over the baby gate we had in the stairwell, which is why we're concerned she might jump over a "fence" separating the living room and the kitchen.
Gracii, have you also looked at www.drsfostersmith.com? the items they have are great quality and i just looked at their gates, they have one that's 41" high. You will most likely need the extender they sell as well, though.
