After looking at yours I'm starting to wonder if Rolo (ours) is a fluffy...he seems to have such long fur compared to your graceful and sleek girl. Hrrrrmmmm... :)
  • Corgi Mom

Welcome to the group! What an absolute cutie! :-D
  • Bridget

Thanks Shelby! I loved seeing the pictures of your puppy and am counting the days until we can get ours. She is defintely beautiful!

Your comments about the blanket having the smell of mom and siblings were great! I will definitely take a small blanket to the owner's to have them get the scents on there before we bring him/her home.

I am very curious about the potty pads. Do you use those only indoors when you don't want to go outside? Like in the middle of the night? Hmmm, maybe I can do the daytime outside thing, but at night when they need to go use those? Will that confuse them?
  • Bridget

oh! I would defintely do the potty pads if I lived in Minnesota too! We're getting our puppy in a couple of months and it will be lovely weather for that potty training time, but still in the middle of the night...it might be easiest to just do the potty pad until she can hold it all night.

Does Sadie hold it all night yet? How old is she?
  • NoClaws4Alarm

Rolo is nearly (as of April 3rd) 6 months old in the most recent photos. Maybe he just got his overcoat early and he's going to grow into it. I really hope not, though... he's so silky to the touch.

As for our Sadie (the eldest) she barely tolerates Rolo. They had a major incident where they were both jumping on me and Rolo got a little too close to her, or startled her, and she bit him in the face, latching on to his upper lip and just under his left eye. We were very lucky... the vet said a little higher and Rolo could have lost the eye. Poor little guy's lip was cut just above his gumline and he had the worst time eating for the next week...even with the pain medication. We've kept them pretty separate since then.

Sadie is a rescue though...and her behavior has always been a little off anyway. She seems to be the most docile and loving animal anyone's ever met. I would have NEVER thought her capable of hurting Rolo until this happened. It just served to remind me that you have to be VERY observant of doggie signals. This whole ordeal only lasted (literally) 2 seconds... and Sadie did give us warnings that he was about to set her off... we were just being too human to listen.

I think it's just she's been alone or around older (less hyper) dogs and a puppy going full tilt for the face was more than she could handle. They seem to be doing better now that he's calming down a bit. Hopefully more so after he goes in for his snip and chip.

It is a small world, Gris is from here. His dad is Ted E Bear, the corgi that is wearing the custome of the cowboys rider. I got a email from her that said that Gris was sleepy with her and getting along with everyone. He has been a really happy little boy. If you get pics of them playing together you'll have to email them sometime. That would be really neat to see.
  • REB

You have so many great pictures - I really enjoyed them. I have a female tri-color also and see a lot of similarities! .
  • Shannon

Hi again, have you got to see our little Gris lately. How is he doing?
  • Butter

Hi Shelby: ( I added this as a reply to a question you asked in a forum but not sure if you would see it, so I'm pasting it here.)

I just joined and yes, my Corgi LOVES snow peas, carrots, turnips, almost all vegetables. He has had bowel problems before we adopted him but has been fine with us with lots of veggies in his diet.
Yes, they can do the bear thing. Buster, our Corgi, taught it to himself. He actually waves his top hands; we call it "the Wave". I am trying to perfect it so that he will do it on command. Sometimes he just stands and doesn't wave. When that happens, I kneel in front of him and say "do the wave" over and over while I wave my hands to. He is definitely learning. He is 9 years old and is a Cardigan and weights 47 lbs and doing this doesn't seem to hurt his back at all. He has been vet checked and has a large bone structure and a LOT of muscle and isnt' overweight. So, if he can do it at his age and weight then I think a puppy should be able to. Also, I am working on teaching him names for all his toys. He is definitely learning. I have 3 short videos on Youtube (not the best production) but shows him doing these things. I haven't been able to figure out how to put videos or pictures on "My Page" but I've included the YouTube links below.

!st time Buster did the wave:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAF80TVaSH8

    Buster plays with toys:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEThB7Gq7DI

    Buster perfects "The Wave"

Maybe you can help me: How did you teach Sadie to shake, bang dead, etc. Also, do you know how to add pictures or videos to "My Page".

Thanks for your help. Not quite sure if you will be messaged about this reply so I'll try to cut and paste it to your page.

    Hi Shelby and Sadie!

Thank you for coming to the picnic! It was wonderful to meet both of you and I hope that we will see you next year! Sadie is a doll.

  • Chrissy

Hi Shelby and Sadie! Was Sadie from Nemo the tri corgi that is in Zumbrota with Renee? Renee was actually the one who told me about this website : )
  • Chrissy

I actually went out to visit Renee so that she could look at Hunter incase she would be interested in using him for a litter. If you would be interested, I am looking to find him a female to mate with.

But yeah it is crazy how many corgis she has. I won't lie though, I wish I could have a pack of them. They are such great dogs : ) All of her dogs are great.
  • Chrissy

So I know you live an hour away, but we are going to do a meet and greet as it is posted on the MN group page, for this Sunday, Sept. 21 around 1 PM at the alimagnet dog park in burnsville. it is on cty rd. 42 and 11. We would love to have you come and I am going to try and talk Renee into it if she is free too. Hope to see you there : )
  • Chrissy

Sorry you couldn't make it and congrats on the new pup Leo!! Sadie does seem to look like she thinks you bought him for her lol. I love watching corgis play. I will keep you updated as to when I can get people together for a meet and greet again. I thought at one point and time, Renee was thinking about having people out to her house but I'm not sure what happened to that or if that was just an idea that was on her page. It would be cool if we could start some kind of a monthly get together of some sort.

    http://corgi.guille.net/2008/10/02/prepare-for-the-corgis-invasion-of-burnsville/

tomorrow. I know it is short notice but come if you can. Should be well attended and it is a hoot to see so many corgis together.
  • Cagney & Lacey & Chapin

The corgi social was a big hit! Hopefully we will have pictures to post soon.

Your two look adorable. Life is certainly more fun with two. I am jealous you can take yours to work with you!

If you get the chance please do accept us as a friend on here.

    Peace
  • Becky H.

I'm planning on going to Alimagnet dog park in Burnsville on Saturday (the 25th) around noon. If you can make it, let me know!

I wasn't able to attend last week's gathering, so I'm trying to set up another meet and greet.
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi there Shelby, Sadie and Leo!!! You are close to us!!! Where did you get Leo and Sadie!!! We haven't gone to many dog parks yet as Edward is still getting vaccinations and such, although we do have one fairly close to our house!!! We tend to save it for the colder months though when we can't get to the Lake and things start to freeze up a little more!!!! I too love having the contrasting tri and Sable, although Gem is mostly red and white!! Love it that you can take them to work with you!!!! Keep in touch!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi again, we will definitely have to get together!!! Do you ever go to Leashes and Leads near Byron?? They have just added a big doggie play area with a pond, dock, toys etc. I have not seen it yet but there was a write up about it in the Post-Bulletin!!! I can't believe your luck in finding Sadie so close!! I had to look a long time to find my babies!! Do they still breed their Corgis??? I bet Sadie and Leo would love it at the Lake! Maybe we can meet up out there sometime as that would be about 1/2 way for both of us, yes we should definitely plan a time to meet up!! We are in the Ryan's Bay area of the Lake do you know where that is?? How often do you guys Kayak????
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi Shelby, yes I do know where that dog park is! Edward has one more round of shots to get and then we'll definitely be ready for some dog park action! Did that park have water or a stream nearby? Can't remember off hand! We took Edward and Gem to the Plainview Corn Days yesterday! I was amazed at how well they did! We are trying to get Edward out a bit for some socialization! He thought he should bark when people clapped as the parade came thru but soon stopped doing that after we told him to shush!! They were both good little doggies and enjoyed being included in the fun!! I spotted a Corgi out at Lake Zumbro over the weekend!! Red and White I think but I didn't get a chance to chat with the owner, maybe next time! Anyway, Ed will be done with shots within the next 2 weeks and then we can get together!!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, PawsAbilities sounds like a good place to go then for obediance training! I need to sign Edward up soon and was wondering about a place to go. Maybe we could meet up sometime after one of your classes and go to the Dog Park. Edward is under the weather today. Upset stomach and vomiting off and on since about noon. He either ate too much raw hide or got some little cherries off our tree in the backyard? Am keeping a close eye on him. He is playing and is in good spirits so hope it passes quickly!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi again! I get Edward and Gem's food at that store so I know where it is! It is a great store! They are one of the few in town that carry Nutrisource dog food so I got to know them there pretty quickly! What time are Leo's doggie classes going to be? You'll have to let me know what you think of the classes there and how big the class size is! It would be so convenient for me to take classes there as I am on the South side of town! Edward is our barker and a lot more vocal then Gem is so this barking thing rings a familiar tune!! Hope we can meet up with you guys on one of your trips to town!!!! Thanks for commenting on the Lake pictures, I hope to get out there this weekend if the weather is decent!!!
  • Kay and Eddie

Oh the pup sounds beautiful!! You would really have a busy house with one more, I think you're making a good decision! Eddie is doing great, but I will be happy when the teething stage is over. He has befriended everyone in the neighborhood - even neighbors that I rarely talk to. Leave it to a corgi to use their magic charms!! Hope that you are enjoying your summer!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, how did the first obedience class go??????
  • Edward and Gemima

Oh my, sounds like Leo was a pretty good boy after he got over the initial shock! I don't belong to Northgate but my Mom does! She has really bad knees and is doing just the water exercises! She had to evacuate the place a couple weeks ago when there was a gas leak. I had to go and get her as they wouldn't even let her get in her car!! Maybe we can meet before your class on Tuesday sometime as we are losing light at an incredible rate! It was dark after our walk last night and it was only around 8!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

HI, HOW ARE THE OBEDIENCE CLASSES GOING?? I LOOKED AT THE PAWSABILITIES SITE AND WILL PROBABLY SIGN EDWARD UP SOON!! STILL RECOMMEND THEM???
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi Shelby, I think we could definitely meet b/f your class at about 5:45 on the 29th! I also would love to get together at the dog park sometime with Leo, Sadie, Gem and Edward and whoever else you know that would enjoy it!! Gem's birthday is on Sunday October 4th(she is 1) It would work well for us on that day(given good weather)if it works for you?
  • Edward and Gemima

Ok, I'll look for you on the 29th then!! If something comes up I will leave a comment for you!
  • Edward and Gemima

Oh man, that is too bad, poor Leo!!!!! Just let me know how it goes, we can meet up at a later time if it doesn't work out! How do you think he did it????
  • Edward and Gemima

How did things go???? I feel so bad for you guys!!! His favorite toy off limits and all!! I know how hard it is to try to keep them quiet and then when they don't get their toy fix they can get kind've naughty!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, WELL THAT IS ALL GOOD AND BAD ISN'T IT??? I WILL HAVE TO REMEMBER BYRON FOR THAT SPECIALIZED TREATMENT JUST IN CASE..... I WILL MEET UP WITH YOU AT ROCH COUNTRY STORE LATER THEN ABOUT 5:30ISH!!! CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU AND LEO!!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed meeting you and Leo yesterday! I hope we can get together for a romp in the Dog Park on Sunday with the whole gang!! I got a couple good pics of Edward and Leo that I'll post a little later!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

OH MAN.......... JUST GOT BACK FROM EDWARD'S DOCTOR, HE HURT HIS RIGHT FRONT PAW, WELL ACTUALLY, HIS RIGHT SECOND AND LAST TOE ON WEDNESDAY CHASING GEM AROUND A CORNER IN MY PARENTS GARDEN AND IT DIDN'T SEEM TO BE GETTING MUCH BETTER(HE WAS LIMPING ALL THE TIME AND WHINING WITH IT SOME OF THE TIME) ANYWAY THEY HAD TO TAKE X-RAYS AND IT SHOWED A LOT OF SOFT TISSUE SWELLING BUT THANKFULLY NO FRACTURES!!! SHE PUT HIM IN A SOFT WRAP ALL THE WAY UP HIS RIGHT LEG AND PUT HIM ON AN ANTI INFLAMMATORY(RIMADYL) FOR A WEEK!!! WE TOOK SOME PICS OF HIM IN HIS LEG WRAP THAT I WILL POST SOON!! IT LOOKS WORSE THAN IT IS I THINK!!! HAVE TO TRY TO KEEP HIM QUIET BUT HE ALREADY HAS LEARNED HOW TO CHASE GEM AROUND IN IT!!! IT WILL BE A LONG WEEK!!! WE WILL STILL BRING GEM ON SUNDAY IF IT IS A NICE DAY!!!! TALK TO YOU SOON!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

YEP, LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER WEEK WILL BE A GOOD IDEA, SINCE THE SUN WON'T SHINE AND DRY THINGS UP A LITTLE!!! YOU'LL FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE ABOUT LEO, AND EDWARD WILL BE OUT OF HIS CAST, ALTHOUGH, I DON'T THINK WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO KEEP THIS THING ON FOR A WEEK, SINCE HE SEEMS TO THINK IT IS A TOY TO CHEW AND SWAT AT GEM WITH!!!! IT WILL BE A LONG WEEK!!!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi Shelby, the weather is certainly not cooperating at all this Fall or is it Winter???? We will be staying in this weekend and not doing the Doggie Park for sure!! Edward's cast came off on Thursday and he seems to be doing pretty good!!! I was nervous about letting him tear around in the yard much with Gem but somehow it seems almost impossible to stop it. I watched him closely though and he still seems to be sensitive with maybe a little stiffness, but not much limping and no whimpering!!! They did a number with the tape when they wrapped him though(not too happy with that)and that was tricky to get off!!! I still am not comfortable in letting him just go full blast just yet so probably better we can't meet up anyway!! Leo still can't get his favorite ball toy back then??? That's too bad, I hope that it gets better and just goes away!!! The restricted stuff is much harder than it seems it would be!!! Are you able to get him out for walks then or is that restricted too?? Well, not much else, Gem is doing good!! Have fun watching the Twins play on Sunday!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi Shelby, checking in on you guys to see what is new? Did Leo graduate from his training and how is his leg doing??? Did they like the snow the other day?? Mine were completely wild about it!!! Edward is still a little sensitive with his paw.... am supposed to be keeping him sort of quiet(ya right)so guess the weather can be rotten a little longer(not much more tho)I had them out for a nice walk this morning.....have a great weekend!!
  • Alice

    Hi Shelby,
I've been talking to Edward and Gemima and was told I should speak to you about Finnigan's hip problems since you are going through something similar. I have a discussion going on this but basically Finnigan was x-rayed at 8 months and found to have bad hips. Now at a year old he is limping. He's been limping on and off for about a month. It all started after a long day at the dog park and though the limp will go away it seems to come back easily. He's very stiff when he wakes up too.

Our vet gave us some anti-inflammatory to use sparingly and said though he's not overweight if he dropped 2 or 3 pounds it would be good and he needs to strengthen his back end to keep the hips in place. He also recommended seeing a specialist later on to discuss surgery options. He wasn't sure if hip replacement can be done on a dwarf breed.

Anyway, what is the situation with your dog? I was told you are doing physical therapy, anything you could suggest we try?
  • Alice

Thanks for the friend add and I look forward to hearing from you later. :)
  • Edward and Gemima

HI, well we all know that Leo is a smartie and he passed with flying colors! Sorry to hear you had a migraine though!! I gave Alice a heads up on the physical therapy that you have been doing with Leo. I hope you don't mind, but I thought this sounded like a really good idea when you first told me about it and I had never heard of it before! Ed and Gem are going absolutely bezerk out in this snow, I on the otherhand not-so-much!! I do like it better than the rain though!!! going to stay in and bake some cookies today I think!!! So glad to hear from you! I hope you have a great weekend and say hello to Leo and Sadie for us!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, how is Leo???? any progress with the therapy?? The Country Feed Store is having pictures with pets this Saturday Nov. 14th. We are going at 11:30 to try this although I'm not sure how Ed and Gem are going to react. If you need a good laugh you should come!!!! Edward got neutered last Wednesday so we have been limited with our usual activities once again!!! ugghhh, will be glad to get him healed up and get back to normal corgi chaos!!!!
  • Edward and Gemima

I was hoping you were going to say Leo was much better, but sounds like he is still having some issues! Wish it would just go away. I'm sure you do too! It is very hard to watch them go through it and nervewracking, but I am glad he is not in any pain and you are so good to have the therapy.

I am thinking this Santa thing is going to be very interesting. I have a fake Santa we get out at Christmas time so I may get him out for some warm up and see how that goes. Going to try it nonetheless. The weather has been awesome, today a little more like November though. I wish we could've gotten together with the Corgis but didn't work out with all the little quirks and such. I drove past the dog park the other day and it was packed! It reminded me of you, Leo and Sadie.

It sounds like you are keeping very busy with your husband gone right now. Do you know any of the Corgis who are coming in for spay/neuter?? Edward is doing well following his. I should've checked with you to see about it cuz they charge alot here in Rochester.
Hope the next 2 weeks go by fast for you and things can get back to being a little less hectic! Don't work too hard and please keep in touch! Melissa
  • Alice

Thank you for sharing our story with me. A lot of it sounded like what is going on with Finn. He's been doing well. He is stiff when he comes out of his crate after a long period of time but after a few steps he is fine. I'll see a very slight limp occasionally, usually when he's running but that's it. We're holding off on taking him to a specialist since just to talk with them and have some x-rays done it would be around $500. Our vet believes it is his hips. The specialist I spoke to on the phone said even if he has bad hips, one year old is very early for it to be causing him pain and if the pain and limping persists she thinks we should bring him in to see if there could be a tear or knee injury.

Many of the people I've talked to think he will need hip surgery at some point, either Femoral Head Ostectomy or hip replacement (no one has been able to tell me if replacement can even be done on a dwarf breed though) and that is my fear. Not only do I not think we could afford that but I can't imagine putting him through all that. Right now we're just watching him to see what happens. He's been taking supplements since he was 8 months old and we have pain meds to give if he seems to be in a great deal of pain. I've only given them to him twice so far.

I hope thins improve with your pup. Let me know if anything new comes up.
  • Alice

Finn is the same way about his crate sometimes. He sleeps in his crate then stays in it while we're at work. I come home at lunch to take him out then he's back in until I get off work. Same as you, I get a treat and tell him to go to bed and he'll usually run for the crate, but sometimes he will just lay down and refuse to go and when I approach him he'll roll over, tail between his legs. I roll him back over, let him sniff the treat and make him walk to bed. I think he pushes his bedding away because he gets hot because the last few days since it's been much cooler he has not been doing it. I can't imagine that sleeping on the hard crate tray is good for the joints.

Our boys do have a lot in common with their back end problems. Week muscles from a young age, a lot of sway when walking. Can Leo jump up on furniture? Finn has never been able to. I don't know if you read the most recent posts on my "the limp is back" blog, but neurological damage has been suggested to me. It's something I was concerned about since we got him.

I agree with you, our boys were meant to be ours, problems and all. I just hate not knowing what exactly is wrong and I worry that he will eventually become crippled. I want him to be with me until he's an old man.
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi Shelby, oh my gosh, I definitely should've brought Edward to you guys to have his neuter done. The total bill with pain meds and blood work was close to $300. I figure I easily have $1000 into him alone with all his puppy shots, foot episode and neuter! I must be crazy!! Oh what we don't do for our babies!! That will be exciting to see Sadie's mommy!
The pics with Santa went pretty good! Ed was more interested in the cat and kitten running around in there and Gem sat in his lap with a little reluctance, but did it with some treat bribing! They both really wanted to play with the cats but the kitten took a swipe at Ed's nose and that was it. Let the barking begin or should I say woofing!!!

Let me know what your husband finds for you in Ireland. I didn't realize they were so popular there but I think that's wonderful. Another Corgi loving Nation.

I think it's a wonderful idea to bring someone to do a photo in your home! Do you have someone in mind or do you have to do some looking yet!

Going to put out some decorations on our house today with this beautiful weather! Hard to believe the Holidays are coming up so soon. Don't work too hard and say hi to Leo and Sadie for us!1
  • Bev Levy

Sorry Shelby, I live by Michigan State and have taken my dogs there but have no experience with Iowa. Good luck, I hope it turns out well. Bev
  • Shannon

Hi there, haven't been to mycorgi.com for several weeks so just saw your message. I haven't had to take any dogs there. Our vet here has been all we have needed except for a issue we had with a dachshound we we went to Omaha for her. Love the pics you have up.
  • Shannon

glad to hear your girl is getting better
  • Edward and Gemima

  • Kay and Eddie

Hi! Thanks for the note about Eddie! I'm glad that he got a good report! He does love to talk and sing. We found out from Renee he gets that from his mom. Funny - he's chatting with me now and I'm sure he's saying "get off that computer!" They are funny aren't they? We missed him terribly while he was gone, but knew that he was in good hands! Thanks again! Kay and Eddie
  • Edward and Gemima

Hi, I am so glad to hear that Leo is doing better!!! It is so hard when they aren't themselves....you just want to do anything you can for them to get them better! No one wants to hear it will just take time but sometimes I guess it works out for the best! So it sounds like Leo and Sadie are liking the snow...we have been enjoying the nicer weather and getting out on some new trails with Ed and Gem. The other day we spied about 5 or 6 robins... now what do you suppose that means?? Either they stayed here or we are gonna get Spring really early huh? Hope things remain uneventful and we will look forward to getting together again soon! Melissa
