About My Corgi(s):
Miss "Lilly " Pad of Forest Hill is a dream that has come true.

Lilly, is a 17 week old tri color Cardign Welsh Corgi. She weighs 16 pounds She has a sister, Winnie (jack russell terrier), who is 12 years her senior. Her brother, Luke (Boston terrier), is only six years older. It was quite an adjustment for the older dogs, but Lilly has charmed them both. Luke is her playmate and Winnie 'oversees' her dog training.

Life with Lilly.

Ears

Her breeder taped her ears and gave us directions to continue the taping until the ears remain erect. After 2 weeks removed tape, ears remained upright for about 2 days and then they began to droop. I have retaped, but it has not been very successful. Any suggestions?

After reading the comments about Petsmarts classes, I am going to sign us up.

Lucy - Welcome! how wonderful - another gorgeous cardi from Miss Rita! You have a great dog on your hands! The first person I called after Kai got attacked was Rita.... that should tell you something about her. Kai is now 5 and Rita and I talk at least three times a year, probably more - she led me to Luna's breeder. As for your ears and taping issue - talk to Rita - but 'tween you and I, (pls don't tell Rita!) Kai's tape came off, we didn't retape and Kai's ears came back up on their own. I would love to see photos of Lily! and welcome!

    Welcome,
Lucy, Lily,Winnie and Luke! We got Lance when he was 14 weeks (he now is 2) and the breeder taped Lance's ear up. One ear was already up. We took the tape off and the ear was not standing. I talked to the vet and they said to massage his ear and it should stand up. Every morning I layed him in my lap and massaged his ear while his head was laying down as though his ears would be in the up position, although one ear was already. It seemed to work, Lance now has two ears that both are up. Good Luck.

Lucy - two of our dogs' relatives are performing at the Cardigan Nationals in Kentucky http://www.cardigancorgis.com/NS2008/prez08.asp - look for the cornerstone dogs, results haven't been posted yet.

Lucy, thanks for the positive feedback on my blog post. I've been known to have a "peculiar" sense of humor and you've seen a small offering! In regards to your training question, do you use a clicker in your training?
  • Trice

Lili is beautiful! Looks like you're having fun with all the doggies. I'm considering getting a second one. =)
  • Sylvia & Timmy

    Hi Lucy,
Thanks for the compliment on "dog" knowledge. I change Timmy's food every couple of months due to advice of an allergy specialist that I see. Apparently, the signs I saw in Timmy, (brown dirty ears, eye boogies, dull coat even eating premium food, and itchy skin were signs of allergies. Allergy testing showed that Timmy had no real high sensitivities to anything. He also explained that allergies tend to come over time and continual exposure. So that set the rotation of foods into action.

In addition I discovered through research and speaking with a canine nutritionist that the protein in dog foods has changed. When you and I were kids, most dog foods used beef as the major protein source. Today it's chicken because dogs began to develop allergies to beef. Coincidently, in Australia, pet food manufacturers started using beef because dogs began to develop allergies to lamb. Also, today pet food manufacturers are using plant sources of protein to meet the minimum AAFCO requirements for protein.

After my discussion with the nutritionist and my vet (who concurs with my decision), I decided to put Timmy on a no grain food diet and vary the protein and food sources. This way I hoped to guard against any product recalls or contamination problems. (If they involved the food I was currently feeding, it would have only been for a short period of time.)

Since the switch to no grain foods, he has never had to have his ears cleaned, no eye boogies, no itching, and his coat is gorgeous (not that I'm biased, LOL). He gets baths approximately every 4-6 weeks, just prior to visiting at nursing homes and the local hospital (per Delta Society guidelines). the Solid Gold Seameal in addition to a couple of days of probiotics is all I need to make a switch. His "poops" are very small (look kitty like) and solid and he's never had a digestive issue. This is why I use the Seameal, to help keep his digestive track in order all the time.

The wild salmon oil is an antioxident and helps with skin and coat. Generally bathing so often isn't good for the coat, so I added it to help. Also, Timmy has been diagnosed with arthritis in his right hip (dysplasia) and the omega 3's have good anti-inflammatory properties. Dogster has some really knowledgeable people in their food and nutrition forums. Also, Aloha, here on MyCorgi knows quite a bit.

If you need any more information just pmail me here or comment on my page.

By the way, I'm looking to add a Cardigan corgi to our small family. Perhaps a rescue or an older dog from a local breeder. Lilly looks so cute and makes me want a cardi now. At least some of that puppy breath!!!! Can't wait to see more pics.

Hope to see some more puppy pics soon and

    Hi Sylvia
Everything you said makes such great sense. We have a lovely old Jack Russell and if I knew then what I am learning it would have helped with her on going skin allergy problem!!
So, after Lilly turns one, I am going to start rotating her food. Right now she is on the Blue puppy food - it is chicken, whole grains and fresh veggies. Our other dogs eat the vension and brown rice. dry food.
I am going to research foods that are 'no' grain dog food. When you say you vary protein source what exactly does that involve?. Do you bake chicken, etc?
Realize that I am asking many questions, but after the experience our other dog had, I want to be proactive.
Oh, Cardi's are great. Our dog school teacher said she definitely has the temperment and personality to be a therapy dog. No, she is not ready......, but apparently there is a hope. (She still chews so much)
Another question....bathing.... in and around our yard, Lilly is like that toddler. She can find every puddle, digs for things, etc. and stays dirty..... our soil is mostly red clay, so it means we have had to bath her more than every 4-6 weeks. Do you recommend a specific shampoo for frequent bathing? Thanks for all your help

  • Beezie

    Hi Lucy and Lilly!

It's so nice to meet you! Thank you for the warm welcome. Lilly is just beautiful. She's makes me want to reach out and hug her - she looks so soft and like a nice huggable bundle. Beezie is Lilly's age and she is 12.5 lbs. Big difference between the Cardis and the Pems seems to be size, at least from the little bit of experience I have with Cardis. I have a friend overseas who raises them and I love the cardis - they are so beautiful.

As to Lilly's ears - they may come up yet. My previous boy's (Pem) one ear flopped after taking the tape off and nothing worked til the day he turned 5 years old. For some reason on that day, the ear stood up and stayed up. He's gone to Rainbow Bridge but for the next 10 years his ear stayed up.

So far, Beezie's haven't fallen, not even during teething (yet).

I read your comment back to Sylvia and Timmy and I believe you can use a rubber brush to help keep their coat clean of the day to day rolls in the dirt, mud, puddles and twigs. I do with my big pooch Asher and with that plus an actual brushing once to twice a week *depending on his shedding* He seems to do just fine with it. Though i would still ask Sylvia for your questions. I'm still learning about Corgi's ^^
  • Alice

How old is Lilly now? Did her ears stay up? I love her name. I have a friend that calls me Lilly Pad...not really sure why, but it's cute. :)
  • Alice

I'm glad her ears finally went up. :) Finn's are mostly up but sometimes they fall more to the sides. They are just not quite sturdy enough yet. A breeder told me to mix cottage cheese in with his food too so we've been doing that once a day since he was 8 weeks old. I'm not sure if it really helps or not but it certainly can't hurt, plus he loves the taste. :) Too bad we're not closer or Finn and Lilly could have a play date.
  • Corgibyassociation

Thank you for the add. You have such a gorgeous tri!
  • Wendt Worth Corgi's

Thank you very much. Your tri is adorable. We all learn from each other thats what is so wonderful about the site.
  • Juneaux and Maximus

Thanks:) Your Lily is a beauty!
  • Juel

Thanks for the note! I have decided on a cardigan, I had a hard time deciding! I picked more by the breeder than the breed. I clicked better with the cardi breeder. (not saying anything bad about the pem breeder, she was quite nice and her pups where beautiful.) But when I visited the cardi breeder last fall he had a litter, and they where all so snuggly and I really liked his socialization process. He even has chickens for the pups to get used to! I am just waiting for the next litter.
