I have three teenage kids and I just love being a Mom to a Corgi also! I live in sunny Southern California with the three kids, three dogs, two cats and a most wonderful husband.

About My Corgi(s):
Sidney is our first purebred corgi and we are thrilled to have him. He was born 7/11/07. We planned to start him in agility training, but there was a long waiting list. So while waiting for an opening, we took classes for therapy dog training. As it turns out, he's a pretty good therapy dog, so we stuck with that and never got around to agility. Now he is training as a Rally dog. We love it! He's one smart little character! Oh, and he's undocked, so his beautiful tail attracts a lot of attention - good attention.
On August 30th, Sidney suddenly came up lame in his hind left leg. The next day we got xrays for him and found out he has severe hip dysplasia. On Sept 7th he had a Femoral Head Ostectomy to relieve the pain. His right hip is not in great shape either but we're hoping that with glucosamine supplements and exercise we can keep it healthy. *Update* You would never know Sid has surgery now. He moves beautifully. The water therapy and supplements have worked wonders.
Bruce is our corgi/elkhound (?) mix. We rescued him from the brink of euthanasia when he was approximately 10-11 years old (he had a day or two left to go). He's about 16 now and his only sign of his advanced age are bad teeth and slow mornings. I adore Brucie and he worships me. He's my funny short angel with a puffball tail (thanks to the elkhound side). He's about 18 now and going strong.
Chester is our "tall dog". He's a black dane/lab mix that we got from a "free to good home" ad in the local newspaper. He's also old, about 15 years old. We know his age because we've had him 14 years, and he was an adult when we brought him home! He's a very serious dog and not very affectionate compared to the corgis, but he has been a very good dog, just aloof. We can't take Chester as many places as the shorties because he does not travel well. He's almost 17 now and has definitely slowed down. *UPDATE* Chester had a sudden decline and was sent to the bridge on April 15th 2013 at the age of 17.
In February 2013 we added Connie to our family. She's a little tri corgi who was picked up as a stray and put up for adoption at our local Humane Society. She's a real sweet girl and loves to play ball. She's learning a lot from Sidney about life here. We can't believe that her family never came to claim her. She's got good manners and she gets along well with the other dogs and the cats, and everyone she meets is her best friend.
And the pack grows! In November we took in a black-headed tri who we named Copper. He and Connie were both born in 2009 and they are great buddies and a ball-chasing tag team. Copper is sweet and cuddly and eager to please.
Thanks Geri and Sydney! Snyder you are so photogenic you must be the handsomest little guy anywhere! It's a good thing you live so far away otherwise you might have to come home with me!
Awe! Thanks for the welcome!! As for Pancake, I have no idea with what she's mixed. I just adopted her on Saturday 9/18 from a shelter. They didn't know much about her. They received her on the 15th from someone who found her. She's super sweet, but she has started barking when I leave for work in the morning. Do you (or anyone else) have any advice to help stop her barking? I take her for a walk in the morning and play with her while I'm getting ready, but it still doesn't seem to be enough. I just don't want my neighbors complaining. :\
I know what you mean about the bra thing...my Bella has an issue with my underwear (only mine) no oneelse in the house. It drives me crazy! So needless to say I dont buy undies from Victoria's Secret anymore...Grrr!
Thank you for the Welcome Geri & Sidney. Woops, I forgot I put down that batman thing. My Corgi wouldn't let me create an account without an "about me" and I wasn't up for writing a bio. Your little ones are adorable!!
Thank you for the welcome, a pleasant surprise. Its nice to meet other Corgi owners and if I ever grasp the picture thing..I try..I will post sophia with 2 of here favorite things: her pool and her jolly ball.
Geri and Sidney thank you for the warm welcome! Sophie sure gets a lot of wonderful attention over her tail too! I am so sorry to hear about Sidney - we are sending him our love and healing light during his recovery time.
Sophie has severe dysplasia and will probably be facing surgery one day. Last winter she became very sad and inactive. I took her into to the vet and he did the xrays on her hips. He put her on a doggie anti-inflammatory which began helping her immediately. I give it to her every other day now. She had also gained too much weight 36.5 pounds and our vet wants her down to 25-28. She weighs 32 pounds now, so we are working on it. She feels good most of the time, but she doesn't have the high energy levels of a normal corgi.
Sophie is my first corgi, I understand hip dysplasia can be common for them. Her first summer I noticed she had the little "bunny hop" when she ran, so I was prepared for the news. The vet went over with me what surgery she would be eligible for (I don't recall what it is called, but it isn't a hip replacement). YES, she is on the Dasuquin chews.
It is so wonderful that Sidney was a good weight and very fit! We will check in on his progress. How is he doing?
The FHO surgery is what our Vet went over with me. It is good to hear that that Sidney still has his smile! I imagine physical therapy will be very important for his recovery! Keep up the good work you two!~
Yes! We got Bella before I had read the books (I was a few years late to the party) and when we picked out Eddie the day he was born a friend mentioned - hey, name him Edward! From then on for the 8 weeks we waited for Eddie to grow up and come home, we called him that as a joke and it stuck. He is SO an Eddie. When he's naughty we call him Edward.
Awe <3 Thank for the welcome that is Mickey my son, this site is going to make my head explode! All these Corgis, yours is adorable awe! Thank you. I love your page!
So sorry to hear about Sidney's hip problem. I hope we won't have any problems. Callie runs around like crazy. It would be hard to keep her quiete. Best of wishes for an easy recovery.
Long story short? (Lord, I just described a Corgi!) He was trembling in the hindquarters... So, meds...tests...xrays....ultrasound.... Ultimately, discovered Hypercalciumia (sp?) from his food was a huge culprit...but the xrays of his hips didn't look good. He's on Gylco-Flex now, much improved... Thinking about taking him to a PWC specialist (vet who's a breeder) for a 2nd opinion.
Absolutely, our Corgi gets more attention in Italy! The Italians LOVE dogs and they don't have many (I've seen 1 other) Corgis in Milan. Good luck with the recovery. sounds like you've been through a lot with yours. What food do you recommend & not recommend?
Hi Geri
, My birthday is April 2nd and so mine falls on Easter occasionally! I had a good friend (since 7th grade) like that who died suddenly at 50...I'm 55! What is strange is that my best friend for the last few years has the same birthdate as my friend from highschool! Wynn would make a terrible patient....I know it's hard seeing our loved ones in pain!
Hi, and thanks for the welcome. We have around 40 breeders on pembroke/cardigan, wich I know about. We have yearly special shows for Corgis, often together with the Swedish Corgi Club. Aswell we got a day called the corgis day where we have corgi sprint, puppy show, prettiest eyes and fur competition all for fun. Not very many in the public know what a corgi is, but they think its soooo cute and everyone have to stop and ask me about Amiga:)
