I have three teenage kids and I just love being a Mom to a Corgi also! I live in sunny Southern California with the three kids, three dogs, two cats and a most wonderful husband.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Sidney is our first purebred corgi and we are thrilled to have him. He was born 7/11/07. We planned to start him in agility training, but there was a long waiting list. So while waiting for an opening, we took classes for therapy dog training. As it turns out, he's a pretty good therapy dog, so we stuck with that and never got around to agility. Now he is training as a Rally dog. We love it! He's one smart little character! Oh, and he's undocked, so his beautiful tail attracts a lot of attention - good attention.
On August 30th, Sidney suddenly came up lame in his hind left leg. The next day we got xrays for him and found out he has severe hip dysplasia. On Sept 7th he had a Femoral Head Ostectomy to relieve the pain. His right hip is not in great shape either but we're hoping that with glucosamine supplements and exercise we can keep it healthy. *Update* You would never know Sid has surgery now. He moves beautifully. The water therapy and supplements have worked wonders.
Bruce is our corgi/elkhound (?) mix. We rescued him from the brink of euthanasia when he was approximately 10-11 years old (he had a day or two left to go). He's about 16 now and his only sign of his advanced age are bad teeth and slow mornings. I adore Brucie and he worships me. He's my funny short angel with a puffball tail (thanks to the elkhound side). He's about 18 now and going strong.
Chester is our "tall dog". He's a black dane/lab mix that we got from a "free to good home" ad in the local newspaper. He's also old, about 15 years old. We know his age because we've had him 14 years, and he was an adult when we brought him home! He's a very serious dog and not very affectionate compared to the corgis, but he has been a very good dog, just aloof. We can't take Chester as many places as the shorties because he does not travel well. He's almost 17 now and has definitely slowed down. *UPDATE* Chester had a sudden decline and was sent to the bridge on April 15th 2013 at the age of 17.
In February 2013 we added Connie to our family. She's a little tri corgi who was picked up as a stray and put up for adoption at our local Humane Society. She's a real sweet girl and loves to play ball. She's learning a lot from Sidney about life here. We can't believe that her family never came to claim her. She's got good manners and she gets along well with the other dogs and the cats, and everyone she meets is her best friend.
And the pack grows! In November we took in a black-headed tri who we named Copper. He and Connie were both born in 2009 and they are great buddies and a ball-chasing tag team. Copper is sweet and cuddly and eager to please.
Thank you for the welcome. We get such a kick out of our Tony Curtis, a mixed breed with Corgi ears and build. He loves to meet all people and doggies. He got so excited the first time he met some Corgis - finally - some dogs that have his husky build and short little legs!
Hi Geri! Yes! We are a part of the San Diego Meetup group. We actually met you, Sidney, Connie & Cooper back at the Walk for the Animals at Liberty Station, this year! I couldn't figure out to edit my profile until now, you met My corgi as Dublin! Crysmont is just part of her AKC name. I haven't been able to make it to any more meetups, as my schedule has my Saturdays full. In mid September my schedule will change & I'll be able to attend more events. Looking forward to seeing you all again!
Thank you for the welcome, Geri and Sidney! No, Corgis are far from common i DK, compared to other species. We have only met 1 other Corgi (randomly, that is. We have met many at different Corgi gatherings) so far :-) Also, there are a lot more Cardigans than Pembroke. It is opposite in US, right? :-)
Don't laugh...his name is Biff. It was the only way I could get my first husband to agree to a corgi 15 years ago; if I gave him the name of his line of Boxers, all named Biff. Flash forward to my current husband, who spent 5 years w/ my beloved former Biff (14 1/2 as my baby), and neither one of us could stick to any of the names we picked for the new baby. I remember thinking, "Oh, how disrespectful!" when my former husband told me all of his previous Boxers had the same name, but now I get it. Both my new husband and I simply could not stop calling him Biff. old habits die hard.
Thank you! I am new to the internet, I live on Walton's Mountain,Va. And believe it or not we just got internet. I am so happy to be able to communicate with other Corgi families as there are not many Corgis around here.
Thank you for the welcome! I have many babies &take in as well so some become permanent residence I have plenty of house space & 30 acres of run space, Jasper, Jupiter, Molly, Cupid, Cheetara, Lola & our 2 new tiny babies Valentine & Autumn. Mine love to be couch bums as well as be active outdoors & love the boat & beach, Kids I think mostly cause they can talk them out of food,They also love love new friends even if the other is not so willing lol
Thank you for the welcome. Glad to read Sidney is moving well again after his operation. San Diego is beautiful my wife would love to move there someday. Take care Joe,Molly and Brody.
Thanks so much! Your corgi is adorable. It has the signature corgi smile. We are looking forward to learning more about Corgies on this site because Sebastian is a handful; nothing like my former labs or German Shepherds!
Hi Geri & Sidney, there are quite a few Corgies down here, its rare to encounter another in the city and thats fine because Shepard looks exotic, being a fluffy corgi and all :D
Down here the most common dogs are schnauzers, labradors, maltese, poodle & chihuahua (of course) and pitbulls
Hi Gary and Shirley! I did contact the moderator of that facebook page. Thy gave me a referral to a breeder in Ft Lauderdale. I contacted the breeder and they replied, however, I got a message from them a month later that they are relocating to Indianapolis and no longer going to breed.
I found a breeder in Kansas City Missouri who said she would agree not to dock the tail, so long as I pay for the total cost of he dog upfront at the time of birth rather than merely placing a deposit. Since I live in California, it would be nice to find a breeder willing to work with me on this that is closer. I'm still wavering on whether or not the tail is important to me (I want it undocked just because I love a wagging tail, not for humane reasons). If I choose a breeder who agrees to not dock the tail of one dog in its litter- I will not Get to choose the dog based on temperament. The most ideal situation would be to find a breeder who doesn't dock, but that's difficult.
I'm still reaching out to breeders who are more local (such as Bay Area) but I am finding better luck in getting responses when I do not lea with questions about not docking the tail of a pup or me. I'm not a PETA looney, I swear! I just have a heart that melts for a happy wagging tail!
