About My Corgi(s):
Have had R & W Pembrokes my whole life, usually in pairs. Lucy, our now 5-yr old charmer, is a delight and keeps us laughing. We purposely picked a petite girl so that we could fly with her in the passenger cabin. We had our maiden voyage CA to NY (w. Lucy in the largest sized airline approved sherpa) and we all survived––esp. me, with the help of a bloody mary!

Fast forward a year and we re-homed a tri-male puppy who would have been in the pound if we didn't intervene. He had been left alone basically 24/7 in a backyard, and was all ribs and ears. He was a handful and the most difficult corgi I had ever owned. I don't know who was more upset by the decision to keep him, Jack, my husband, or Lucy. But all things happen for a reason. He's a wonderful, gentle and loyal corgi and we're all in love with him, including Lucy, (most of the time!), haha. RR turned 1 yo this month & surprised us all by becoming quite the looker. Lucy is 5. RR is twice her size, Everyone thinks that she's the puppy. Ya gotta love happy endings!!!
I have:

Thanks and yes I moved here from Austria.  I love the weather here in Florida.

I never thought I would be a Corgi lover. I have always had big dogs but Stella stole our heart.  I look forward to being a part of what looks like to be a wonderful Corgi family. :)

  • Julie Miller

Thank you! I am learning right now, and would love to have the breeder contact info. I have never gotten a dog from a breeder, so the process and research is all new to me. I would value any insight you have. Thanks!

  • Ms Ungala

My daughter went to England this summer with her school.  While there she was introduced to the breed.  She also found out that the Queen of England had 4 of them.  Well if they are good enough for the Queen a corgi would be good enough for my princess.  LOL

  • Ms Ungala

Here is a photo of the two of them together!  Stella and Buddha.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help. There is a rescued Pembroke here in TN that we are considering. She is older (7), and I am trying to figure out what would be the best option for our family. We have young children (5 & 6) who are timid around dogs. Not sure if puppy exuberance would be the best or not. However, not sure that a 7 yo dog would tolerate child exuberance (even if it is not directed toward the dog...)....

  • Julie Miller

Yes, I have been looking at the links you gave me. We did not adopt the rescue yet. We have decided to wait until the end of Feb., however, if she is still available then, we will probably try to meet her. I do not think our family is ready for a puppy, so I think getting a puppy from a breeder is out. I do have some concern about the conflicting things I seem to be reading about if corgis are good with kids...

  • Julie Miller

Thank you for sharing your experience. The mixed comments I seem to be getting are from corgi owners who say most corgis are great family dogs, and then there is a rescue on pf that has almost every corgi listed as no kids, a local rescue (not corgi rescue) also stated no kids, so it all felt like mixed messages. However, we have applied with Middle TN Corgi Rescue and also are researching the possibility of a puppy. Not to mention, I'm obsessively checking cl, pf, petango, and ebay classifieds. :)

  • Julie Miller

After researching more about puppy training, I feel more empowered to handle a puppy.

  • John Wolff

I have a photo of the two of them together.   They're ours.

  • Melissa and Franklin!

I contacted a few breeders from my the closest corgi club (which is the Golden Gate Corgi Club) and they have all agreed that they pretty much sell their pups for the same price and adults for the same price, the couple of breeders I contacted didn't know of any adults and could only offer me puppies which were $1000. I have been approved to adopt a corgi at a rescue in Bakersfield and now I am just waiting for them to tell me when I can go down and meet him. Hopefully next Friday or Saturday. He is ADORABLE and I can't wait to meet him!

  • Melissa and Franklin!

Thanks! He is a real cutie. We've been battling illness with him but he is on the mend. He is on 3 medications and a course of panacure so he is finally starting to act like a pup again. Franklin loves him (most of the time lol) and the cats don't seem to care that he is around. I'm excited to start working with him and getting him over his fears. He does have a name now, it is Kirby. I gave my mom naming rights since I couldn't decide and she drove with me the 5 hours each way to get him. :-D He is a really well behaved boy and I think he will come around with his fear issues with Franklin as his teacher.

  • Czarina, Gatsby, & Scout

Thanks! Your corgis are very cute as well. :) a play date sounds great. Gatsby loves to play! perhaps when he gets a little older!

  • Zion

Hi Ricky, I have a friend who live in Pasadena (close to Rose bowl area) owns two corgis.  As for my area (close to Colorado) not too many I found.

  • Jane Christensen

Wow Ricky,,,you and Wendy made it:) Happy Birthday and we all hope you had a great big party with lots of yummy treats!

  • Gromit, Sparkle, and Doug

Happy b-day, Rafanator!  I never doubted you!   LOL

  • Rachael & Waffle

Lol, thanks, I'm glad you like them!  Waffle suffers for a good chuckle.  (He always gets good snacks out of it though, so no big deal. :3 )

  • Bev Levy

I had to retire the smaller dog beds, Misty is very hard on them! She does seem to like the smaller ones better though. They are all funny with the beds, some are really popular and some aren't. The cats like them all but my husband doesn't love the look all over the house so I have to keep it under control.

  • John Wolff

As we speak, the invisible vibes beamed by the Rafanator are causing Sparkle to feel a mysterious, persistent urge to gnaw on something conspicuous, expensive, and irreplaceable.

  • Natalie, Lance &Tucker

Long time no talk!! How are you?

  • Bradley Hopkins

Couldn't imagine life without my girl either. More trustwothy than most people I know lol!

  • Dayna

Thank you for noticing! I actually did look it up too and you were right about the different pigmentation. My Aussie had the se thing when she was a pup. I just figured it was something that would change along with how their fur coloring changes as well.
  • Bradley Hopkins

Always been a fan of corgis as a breed. I grew up in a house where the breed of choice was Norwiegian Elkhounds. They are VERY loyal dogs. But then time passed and I wanted the same kind of loyalty in a smaller dog since I was living in a urban area. Corgis seemed to be the right choice. I will admit that since Cass has come into my life, some things I expected and some things I learned on the fly about the breed. I reasearched their traits beforehand. But nothing can quite prepare you for all the little Corgi quirks as you know lol! Sometimes she is a little TOO SMART lol! She can try your patience at times, but thats just part of the deal and I wouldnt trade her for a million bucks!! I had her catching a frisbee on the fly out of the air at about six months! She can learn anything I have the time and dedication to teach her! And some of the expressions I get from her! Somtimes Its easy to forget shes a dog lol! And she is great with other dogs, But definately has the dominant Corgi attitude! Not in a mean or aggressive way, but if some other pooch wants her toy they better have lots of determination!!!!!

  • Bradley Hopkins

Your corgis are beautiful dogs as well! Cassie will sulk somtimes also but she gets over it quickly lol! I cant imagine having more than one. I bet they keep you hopping!

  • Bradley Hopkins

Thats great that they have each other. Cass has a brother and sister of the feline persuasion.

  • Juno

Heyyy! LOVED the link you sent. that dog was AMAZING..man how long did that training take? haha anyhow...i found out today from Juno's trainer that I was teaching him "shake" incorrectly....so we'll see how it goes w/ the correct change :D

  • Carrie Baxter

It's posted somewhere on my page.  I have the hardest time finding things here after I post them.

  • Dayna

Sorry for such a late response but it's quite alright! I appreciate the concern because I had never heard of that and it could have been very true! Glad to be Corgi friends lol. But to answer your question, I will be getting my little baby this Saturday!!! I can't wait! Mycorgi.com will probably be flooded with pictures of her this weekend so be on the look out haha!
  • Lois B. Allen

How is the big boy doing?  I hope he is much improved.

  • Sylvia & Timmy

The other leg was a concern for me as well.  That's why we did a really slow recovery, much more conservative than the vet recommended.  I didn't let him go all out crazy zoom until he was nearly a year out from the surgery.

My vet did say that "fetch" toys are an orthopedic vet's best friend.  LOL  So Timmy's days of playing fetch until he drops are done!  Now I limit how long he plays and vary up exercise to include strengthening ones (uphill walks) to tire him out.  I hated giving up on agility as well, but the turns and bursts of speed and repetitions would make his other leg likely go out as well.  I was told it was due to his conformation and play style.  Can't do much about the first, but I could alter the second.

Good luck on the recovery and hope that Ricky does well.  Getting those stitches out will certainly make him feel better.

  • Sylvia & Timmy

Yes, there was another dog in the home at the time.  I was living with my BFF and her husband at the time and they own an Australian Shepherd, Shelby, that has been Timmy's best friend since she was a pup.  I did act as a security guard though and kept her from being a pest.  Timmy gave me those sad eyes and dejected looks for quite some time.  I did notice that he "went with the flow" and accepted the new norm after a couple of weeks.  Thank DOG they live in the moment and not lament about the past or worry about the future.

Since I'm retired and spent 24/7 with him, I could leave the cone off for several hours at a time.  Sometimes I would nap in the xpen with him!  LOL  As time went on and we took more and more walks over differing terrain, he became more animated and enjoying the new adventures in the woods or to the beach, but always on lead.  I've read and believe that their recuperation is no different than the one we would have for a similar injury.

There's no 100% way of preventing the same injury on the other leg.  The best you can do is to strengthen the surgical leg and the non surgical leg slowly.  Other key is to build up exercise levels for overall fitness (not be the weekend warrior).  Keeping his weight down to the lowest level possible, making sure his muscles are warmed up before strenuous exercise, healthy diet, and as little constant twisting/turning movements as possible.  What that meant for me was no short ball tosses, only very long ones that he would run out straight for.  No jumping for frisbees or balls, only on the ground throws.

My orthopedic surgeon said the injuries come from repetitive stress on the ligaments, not a single event like most people think.  By the time we see the injury (3 legging) the ligament was already partially torn and we didn't see the symptoms or ignored them (thinking he just overdid it).  In humans the ACL is generally from a traumatic injury, but in dogs almost all are from repetitive stress.

I've fully accepted that his other leg might go.  His insurance will pay for the repair and as long as he's healthy, we'll have it done.  I wish I could give you better news.  :((

  • Kathy Wiley

Thanks, Wendy. You are greatly appreciated! Give loves to Lucy and Ricky-Rafa. XOXOXO
  • Beth

Wendy, do you know the bloodlines of the Queen's Corgis?  I have looked online and not only can't I find pedigrees, I can't even find registered names, only call names.

And do you happen to know if Belroyd is still breeding?  I just love their dogs.  To me, it's the classic Corgi look.  I mentioned once before that whenever I see a Corgi whose head and front end I love, it's a Belroyd line dog.   If you look at pictures of my Jack, he's got the classic Belroyd head from his sire, Anwyl Winds O' Change (by Belroyd Knight Flyer).

  • Lisa

And crazy as it seems, I now have FOUR tri corgis, the more the barkier! Thanks for your sweet words, will post a pic of new kid Cooper soon. LJ
  • Jennifer Markley

Just saw your post about my picture...I am horrible at checking my page!  I got it off the internet...think it was a corgi site.  I can send it to you if you want!

  • Jennifer Markley

I thought it was hilarious too!  I wish I was talented enough with PhotoShop to do stuff like that....  :-)

  • Joanne Koppenaal

Hi Wendy, Jarvis was worried about you your FB page is gone and me to!

  • Napolean (Joan and Gabby)

Hello, happy new year. We wish you a fun, prosperous and corgi-tastic year. I have not been on mycorgi for awhile, it's usually gabby responding and check in every once in a while. I hope all is well...we are doing fine. :)
  • Marion Hebert

Just reading your comment about rehoming Ricky......It made me laugh.....I am now rehoming a "wild child".   His name is  KODI....he was given to me to help fill the void from losing Sammie....My poor wonderful female, Merry, is longing for her quiet home.   We have a roaring bundle of energy....1 year old....long bodied Corgi....RED and WHITE...always on the move.....and very adept at driving Merry crazy.  I don't know that this is what I bargained for.....I have to admit that his antics make me laugh...and then I fill up the holes that he digs...try to stay ahead of his racing through the garden (such as it is).....keep him from jumping over Merry.....and taking long (I do mean long) walks to wear down the energy level....I think that this is a hard way to feel young again....All I feel is exhausted.....:Oh Well, how can Merrry and I not love him....he acts just like my youngest (now adult) child.....I survived that.

Hope all is well at your home.  Merry and Kodi are sending their love to Lucy and Ricky-Rafa.

    How the heck are You?????????????????????????????????????????????????/

  • Snickmom

Wendy: I didn't know groups were run by the person who set them up? I just post things when I think a member might be interested. Snickers is just as much of a stick as Lucy, so I don't think I qualify as a social director either!  I spend more time with my tumblr than with MyCorgi lately. Hope you are doing well.

  • Lucy Lee Derstein

Hello! thanks for all of the advice, Lucy just turned two and is doing great! :)

  • Scott Wiley

thank y ou Wendy and Jack, the Corgi Nation are the best people!!!!! We hope that Katie is pregnant with Joey babies. I have never been owned by a better worker than Joe. We worked some cows yesterday, just was not the same

  • John Wolff

Is Ricky rooting for Rafa Nidal?  Does he harbor some secret fantasy of retrieving Rafa's errant practice shots?  That would be a workout:  trying to serve up practice shots faster than a corgi can return them.

Al favors his leg but gets around the hood OK.  I s'poze I'd spend over $1k just on a diagnosis and recommendation.  I want him to be able to play soccer and tennis ball.

Gwynnie (10.75 y.o.) is getting the hiking -- weenie peaks -- but she's done 2 this year already, and an easy 20 miles MLK weekend.  20 miles... I don't feel a day over 60...

3 mo. tricolor puppie (Butters) in our neighborhood!!  An older red (Levi), too!

  • Natalie, Lance &Tucker

Thanks Wendy....we are hanging in there..its tough.  miss him, its way too quiet without Lance.

  • Natalie, Lance &Tucker

Tucker seems to be doing ok, hope he continues to.  My husband had been looking at cardigans not too long after lance passed, but I think it was it was a way of coping.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure we will be able to get another corgi any time soon.  Life is so unpredictable, as I woke up this morning to my fb and the first thing I saw was a fb friend I know through corgi nation, unexpectedly and tragically lost her husband in a car accident, only 45 years old.   So much sadness everywhere.  :(  One day at a time, is the motto I am going back too. Thanks for asking Wendy.  How are you and your family doing?

  • Jane Christensen

Where in the heck have you been?????? I miss you:)

  • Sam Tsang

Hi Wendy, great to hear from you, go to "settings" on your right hands side :)
