Hi Diane, I also went through this with my Sparty a few years ago. He has a partial tear of his cruciate ligament and arthritis. We limited his activity (no more herding the soccer ball and fetch) we put him on Rimadyl for several months. We also cut back on walks when he is limping. That was about 5 years ago and he doesn't limp now unless he overdoes it (fraps will do it). He tends to be anxious and I did not feel he would be a good surgery candidate. Good luck with your Gunny. If I can help let me know. Bev

They did regular blood tests because he was on Rimadyl for quite a while but no adverse effects. It can be a problem but my vet made me aware of what to watch for. It is frequently used and as with human medications has it's place in treatment. I do not give Sparty pain meds now as I feel it would make him more apt to overdo and cause further injury. While he was on meds I kept him leashed while outside and cut out some of his more aggressive activities. We are big walkers and I shortened his walks. He now will catch the tennis ball when we toss it to him instead of us throwing it for him to retrieve. These were hard lifestyle changes to make but he is 11 and in pretty good shape as a result. I think he was about 6 or 7 when he did this.

Hi Diane, I think Sparty was 6 or 7 when he did it. My vet is very experienced with this injury. First he tried manipulation but Sparty was so tense that he could not tell. Then while Sparty was anesthetized and getting his teeth cleaned they x-rayed and manipulated. I did not have a MRI. My vet said in his opinion it was a partial tear and arthritis had already set in. Sparty's temporment makes him a poor candidate for surgery. He is anxious and very nasty when handled by the vet (long story) so we decided to see if pain meds for an extended period would help and it did. Now he very rarely has problems. We walk several miles a day normally but we have cut out some of his more vigorous stopping and starting activities. Let me know if I can help with more info. My neighbor's cocker had the surgery. Hi Diane, I came to your page because I loved your comment to the non-barking corgi parent! Your baby is beautiful, and I hope that now that he is 10 or so days post surgery that he is doing great! Our Lucky had back surgery for IVDD 4 years ago, and I know how difficult it can be when your best friend is recovering. Good luck to both of you

Thank you! Aww I hope for a speedy recovery for Gunny♡. Conan is 8 months old. Everyone gets a kick outta him doing that. You can't say the word "hose" around him, he wont stop barking till he gets to play. We loved the picture of Count Gunny, even our 5yr old niece thought it was hilarious but she kept calling him Conan hahaha. Any Corgi she see's she thinks its Conan, so funny!

I am sooooo sorry! I have been on this site for over two years, and NEVER noticed that I had a wall at the bottom of my page for people to comment on. I would have never ignored you or your questions! I just saw where you had asked about ACL surgery---I hope everything has worked out for you guys! Feel free to contact me at any time....perhaps the email through here is better!! I feel so old now....my daughter is actually the one that showed it to me....Sorry! I feel horrible for not getting back to you!!
