An animal lover...new to the Corgi breed. I have only had "rescue" puppies either from the SPCA or family members who could no longer care for their pets. I also adopt cats, ponies, bunnies and birds.
I adopted a special needs Pembroke Corgie on October 22, 2008. Little Miss Muffett has Addison's Disease and needs daily meds. She is my first Corgi. Just turned 8 on Feb 4th. I also have a Maltese (Harvey 6 years old/adopted) with a breathing problem. They are best friends.
I wanted to let you know what DM is :degenerative myelopathy. It is a genetic disease that is prevalent in Corgis. It strikes while they are in thier prime, 8 years or so. Causes incontinence, paralysis, & a lot of pain. It's hearbreaking to watch a dog with it. I had to put my Twinkie down 5 1/2 years ago, but we didn't realize what she had at the time. Now, all of my dogs are DNA tested through offa.org to make sure they won't get it. My Lucy is certified DM clear (YIPPEE!) & her puppies only had 1 gene, not the 2 necessary for them to get it.
