I am a twenty-something year old born and raised and currently live in San Francisco, California. I am a first-time dog owner and I am a mommy to one (and my first) male Pembroke Welsh Corgi by the name of Bailey...
Bailey was born in Northern California on January 21st, 2008 (an Aquarius - according to doggy astrology, Bailey will be social, a free spirit, quirky, smart, and maybe a rebel!!!). His mommy was a red-headed tri-colored corgi and his daddy Cooper was a red and white corgi. Bailey's fur is much more golden than an ordinary red/white. He gives credit to his parents for that.
Bailey came home on 3/15/08, on a lovely 3 hour drive from Corning, CA. I still remember that day vividly!
Bailey loves meaty treats, the smell of pizza or any other baked carbohydrates (example: french bread!!) , stuffed animals with squeakers, squeaky balls, tug-o-war, wrestling, drinking water, bossing puppies around, peeing on other dogs' poop, doing tricks, going to the dogpark, meeting new people, learning new tricks, exploring, sleeping, and barking too.
Bailey is VERY social and expects every moving thing within a 20 feet radius to say hello to him. If you do not, he will jump on you and insist you pet him. He loves affection from strangers but appears to be embarassed if I display affection to him in public. With dogs, he loves to wrestle, and chase ball-crazy dogs who chase balls. He also loves interuppting picnics at the park, rolling in who-knows-what, and swimming (he's the cutest swimmer too).
Ok nevermind.. I just went to get you the link for bubu and she's lacking a little bit of the Bailey charm. They really only look alike in certain pics. The Mole starts Monday June 2nd on ABC. On the east coast it's on at 10, but I'm not sure if the times are the same in Cali or not. Oh, one of my friends just came back from SFO and brought me a SFO pot holder... aren't I special? LOL (Why a pot holder I have no clue.. it must have been cheaper that the magnet or shot glass!) :-)
Hey Karen and Bailey, it was 98 on my deck and 90 in the shade. Tomorrow is supposed to be the same up here, hope it's cooler for yall. Saturday normal temps are supposed to return. Timmy was bummed, only got to run after the ball a few times and walk was cut short.
We're both considering sleeping outside tonite!! LOL
petsmart always has clearance on clothes (well at least during last holiday) ... i sometimes wish i had a girl dog, just so i can spoil her and dress her up! but i try to make do with kaijuu .. though he has a strawberry costume, which is not very male like .. its okay. strawberries are my favorite, so he deals with it =)
Hey Girlie ~ I'm jealous of your red head group. I'm a red head but Emmy's not so we are not worthy. You are right though.. red heads do have more fun. ;-) Rock on with your cool group, and I will peek in on occasion to see what the red headed corgis are up to.... they would all be jealous of my hair! LOL :-)
I have come to the conclusion that my desire for a corgi, is now full fledge need! Now it is all a matter of finding a good breeder, and the right timing! It probably won't be till next winter. My Work is picking up; I dispatch fire and police for the Forest Service and BLM. My hours become pretty erratic. I have three days off but I can't predict my schedule like I can in the winter time.
Hi there Karen and Bailey! Love your new pictures! =) Congrats on stair master hehehe. Baxter has gotten pretty good at going up them, though going down them is a little difficult for him as well, but he has braved the steps to the basement over the weekend and I think he likes to go down them now heheh. Hope you two had a good weekend. As you can see in the photos I bought Bax a hat and gave him a bath this weekend. =D Not sure those things were on the top of his to do list. But anyway...He finished his classes up last Thursday. It went well...on the whole I gotta say I am pretty pleased with what he has learned...and well what I have learned to train him. I accidentally joined your redhead group last night lol sorry bout that! I hit join because I thought it was a group for red corgis and then I read on and felt stupid heheh forgive meh! What did you and Bailey get into this weekend?
In the mean time it is only limited to the search box and the map, due to the low requirement for opening an account here, it is hard to categorize members according to their location. It is something that we have on the wish list, thank you for your suggestion, we'll bump it up on the to do list :) Keep them coming!
LOL!! Anal glands are scent glands that sit at about 4 and 7 o'clock on the anus. It's not to make them poo. It's to release the glands if they get impacted. Unless you're good at it, I'd have my groomer or vet do it. It's nasty!
Karen,
So sorry I didn't get back to you last night, but been busy for the last couple of days.
I think Bailey will love the Wellness Puppy. The thing I love about Wellness food is all the ingredients are HUMAN grade, meaning, if times get rough you could eat it too!! LOL I'm so happy for Bailey. You'll notice a real difference in his coat and energy level =) As if he needs an increased energy level. One thing you need to watch after switching to a super premium (don't know where they're going next???, Stellar premium perhaps), I digress, is his caloric intake. Wellness will have more calories per cup kcals. So once you've switched him watch his weight and if he seems to be getting a little porky, ease back.
It's so great to see he's doing well, with your training and most of all, love. Can't wait to see more videos!! Uncle Timmy loves those squeeker ones
I forgot to add, I, personally, haven't tasted the Puppy, but their CORE foods, I have. They have a very crunchy texture, pleasant smell, and not very salty. With some warmed chicken broth, the adult CORE is better tasting than Dinty Moore Beef Stew!!!!! The Ocean flavor has a definite fishy taste and could benefit with some more garlic for my taste (not the dogs, of course)!!!
Oh noes! His teef are missing! Heheh aww he's growin up! But yeah I would say he probably ate them...Baxter has been losing teeth too but alas I have not recovered any of them. It would have been cool to scrap book them though, heheh Bailey's baby teeth. Is he chewing a lot too? Baxter is, I know they are aggrivating him, though thankfully he does not eye the furniture for chewing, just his toys. And my shoes if I don't keep them out of reach! lol! Glad you and little Bailey had a good sleepover weekend before last, argh i am so behind in replying hehe. Oh indeed no accidents=good weekend. Baxter has been bad about accidenting at other people's houses. But hopefully as most things, it too shall pass. Hope you and Bailey had a good Memorial Day. Baxter hung out with my boyfriend and I while we gave my older dog Charlie a summer trimming. That poor dog has so much hair, he feels like a different pooch now hehehe, even a little more friskier to play with Baxter more than usual. Sorry about the puppy class that is discouraging, I mean they can't expect you to carry around 10 pieces of duck jerky everywhere you go with Bailey, they need to be focused on you and the walk...not the 10 pieces of duck jerky in your hand. Not to mention that is expensive! My trainer actually used a prong collar with baxter when teaching him to walk on a leash. I know they look like torture devices and I really wasn't comfortable with it at all at first. I mean I thought those were for great big dogs that were out of control. However, I did research on them and got lots of reassurance from my trainer, they are a miracle and a humane tool when it comes to dogs that like to pull and the prongs are not sharp at all. The collar is put on snug, but it doesn't seem to be uncomfortable to them, it doesn't choke them or anything. Granted the first time one is put on they pitch a bit of a fit because they are used to going where they want on the walk not where you want, and only put them on for training. Though it was nothing like I thought it would be. But they correct themselves with the collar on when they start pulling, they get the sensation from the a couple of the prongs (they don't all pull) like they would when their mom was correcting them for something. Its unpleasant to them, and they learn quickly where they need to be on the walk, by your left or right side depending. When the leash is slack and the sensation goes away. I tell you it has made our walks most pleasant and I am constantly praising him. He's not fearful at all and he knows when the collar is put on that its time to go on a walk. The running and darting this way and that is nonexistent. Its just a world of difference. I know the method certainly isnt for everyone...but if I thought the collar was hurting him or being cruel to him I would have trashed the thing immediately and smacked the trainer upside the head. The trainer said that the prong collar is not permanent and that eventually he will walk like this on a regular collar. It would take about 6 months of use and then bringing out the collar like once a month after that just for a refresher course. But anyway I digress, I'm not trying to sell the method to you by any means. =) You find what best works for you and Bailey. I loved his new pictures and videos. Haha Fatty is adorable, poor guy looks like he's the teacher's pet that the other classmates pick on hehehe. Mercedes is adorable too! Oh I took Bax to Tractor Supply over the weekend when I went to get some supplies to fence in a lot for him in the backyard so he can play safely and run around without being on a leash and without me having to worry about him running off/and or chasing him down after said running off hehhe. Anyway, he had a blast. I put him in a shopping cart and he rode all around the store looking at everything and taking in the new smells. He loved it, and I was a bit surprised he never offered to get out of the cart, then again he loves riding. Eventually he fell asleep and used a stuffed toy ball that I put in the cart (and of course had to buy, I'm such a sucker) with him to play with as a pillow and fell fast asleep before we finished shopping. It was so cute, I so wish I would have brought my camera with me. I really want to take him to pet stores like Petsmart and the like. Hopefully we can do that soon, cuz the boy enjoys shopping haha. Well I will hush now before I take up two pages! How's things for you and Bailey been lately?
I understand about the embarrassment thing. On George you can see his little scotum below his penis but it is empty and lying basically flat against his little body. George seems to be a little slow at a lot of things. Both of his ears finally decided to stand up. My Rosie had one ear up and one down when we got her at 10 weeks. Poor George! You know I have actually heard of people who put fake testicles in place of the real ones when they have their dog neutered. I can't imagine doing that! lol
The puppies are actually doing very well. They are 4 weeks old come yesterday. They are walking around, playing with each other and just started eating soft food a couple of days ago. All of them have homes to look forward to going too. Ill post up some more pics @ 3 weeks in a couple of minutes.
Hi Karen and brotha Bailey! Hope you two had a nice weekend! Did you get to the beach? Sigghh...I wish we were closer to the beach. I hear beach+corgi=funfunfun! Heheh I am glad to see the graduation went well...he is such a happy and proud little pup in those pictures, I'm sure you are too. =) He's such a smart little guy. Thats wonderful he came to you with all of those distractions. I am not sure if Baxter would...he just loves distractions lol. I'm sure he will get to where you can have him off leash. Glad to hear he is doing well though with the loose leash, I'm sure you will find the position that fits you both the best whether left or right or either or upsidedownsideways hehehe. =) Thats so cool you have a seatbelt, I'm going to get one soon as I think Baxter is going to be good too in the seat, I have put him in the passenger seat to go up to my friends house which is just a couple of miles up the road. He sits there and behaves very well. Most of the time we travel I keep him in the crate. But he really enjoys being able to look around and watch the traffic. He's not a carsick dog either...thank goodness!
Yes the teething is a very chewy time. Oh Baxter loves icecubes too, he likes to chase them around the floor and catch them and eat them to proclaim victory! His little pearly whites are coming in nicely, has Bailey lost more as well?
Bax's pen is finished! I took some photos and some videos I shall be posting soon. Whew, it was a lot of work, we worked all day saturday and man did I turn into a red lobster. Heheh we were all sunburnt. But it is finished and I think he will be really happy. Of course we were all on the porch while he was exploring around the parameter, pretty soon he came up to the gate and looked at us and gave a soft little 'woof' as if to say, I'm ready to be with you now hehehe.
Yes the buying thing is like an addiction...I can't...resist...buying...something every time I'm out! I think I need a 12 step program lol. Its just...fun. Oh yes, I buy more for him than I do for me anymore. No no I dont need clothes...but the dog does! =D
Its a relief to get those last shots isn't it? It is like a graduation, and you feel much safer taking them places and showing them new things. Oh when I took Bax to the vet he weighed 15.3 pounds. Which was a couple of weeks ago, so if he's still putting on a pound a week I'd say he is close to 16 or 17 now. heheh so no, you do not have a giant corgi...they grow like bunny butted weeds!
I had to change Baxter's food too. He lost interest in the Canidae, not sure why just up and decided he didnt like it. I had been doctoring it up for a while, with chicken broth and peas and carrots. I think he decided to become finicky after all of the training with those tasty treats. But that seemed to work for a bit, but I didnt want to make a habit out of it. I switched to Merrick mostly because it was the only other good brand I could get locally from the kennel in town. He really likes it and has transitioned well. Plus it has added fruits and veggies in it which he loves. I have heard great things about wellness, thought about switching to it, but there are no local dealers and shipping everywhere was just ridiculous. =( I'm sure Bailey will really sparkle on it, lemme know how he likes it!
It is great to hear from you too! And of course Bailey and Bax can be brothers! They can be west side and east side bros for life! Sigh...I wished we were a little closer together, I know they'd be such great pals!
My Corgi's name is Range and he's turning 11months on Jun 17th. I haven't attended any Corgi meetings, but will soon go to one. I just recently joined mycorgi.com, and barely knew about meetings. Bailey is adorable. I've been looking for local Corgi owners to meet up with so my Range can have a play mate. He get's bored easily with just me and my boyfriend. hahhaha
Those pics look like GG Park. It looks just as beautiful as I remember it. (cept for the time I fell in that lake with all the ducks!!!!!!!) EWWWWW. Bailey is growing up tooooo fast. Love your latest pics.
No way, this was BT time (before timmy). No one jumped in to save me, they were all afraid of getting some kind of disease. I took a shower for about an hour after that. LOL Still a beautiful place though.
Oh, I'm so jealous. I went to the Wine Country Corgi picnic last year and had so much fun, but this year they're getting together closer to the coast, between Guerneville and Jenner at a private beach. It's on the 29th of June, but only for a couple of hours and that's too far to go for such a short time, especially with the price of gas today!!! If you're interested, I don't have the site handy, but google "Wine Country Corgis" and their site should come up.
If I ever get down that way, don't worry, I'll let you know, same goes, if you ever decide to come up to Redwwod Country!
Don't forget (as if I had to remind you) to take lots of pics at the meet up!.
my goodness, bailey is gorgeous. PS: we received the adidas hoody from eBay, that was a diamond in the rough. the other outfits were purchased from target and stores just like it. =]
Hi Karen and Bailey!! How are you two? Bailey got to go to the beach and the giant park! Yay! Bax and I are both jealous hehehe. Glad you had a good time and he was such a good boy! =) Bet you were a proud corgi mom!=D I love his pictures and videos from the beach! That just looks like so much dogone fun!
Green eye poop you say? Yuck. Glad its clearing up! Baxter usually gets the morning eye boogers sometimes. His eyes used to drain a bit when he was younger (sniff) and he had little tear stains. I had asked the vet about it once when I took him for shots, and he said his eyes looked clear and he might have been getting a little irritation (dust, debri) and said it was nothing to worry about. Haven't heard of the green eye discharge though...glad that it has taken care of itself! =) Could have been a little allergic reaction to something maybe.
Oh I am excited for him and his first meetup! He will have a ball. Can't wait to see the photos and videos! I wish the NC meetups were closer to take Baxter to, but it would definitely be an all day trip for us, most of it being driving. =( But still planning on going to the corgi picnic this year and make a mini vacation out of it!
Baxter is doing great, we went to Heath's house over the weekend and he played with his doggy gal pal Rosie. I have some pictures I will post hopefully this evening when I get home. Then we went over to my friend Julie's house yesterday where he played with his other doggy gal pal Maggie. He is popular with the ladies LOL! Bax has been doing so well with the accident avoidance here the past couple of weeks. Though he had an accident at Julie's last night because he was too busy playing to bother telling me he needed to go out hehe. So they are bound to happen till they get stronger bladders!
Oh...I never asked...is Bailey going in for the ol snip when he is old enough? Just curious, it was part of my agreement with my breeder to have Baxter fixed. If I wanted to leave him in tact I would have had to pay a lot more for him. But its no big deal to me, he is just a companion pet, I didn't plan on studding him out or raising corgis (thoughahousefullofcorgiswouldbeawesome!!!!). And as I said he is kinda popular with the ladies LOL. But he is going in next month to get fixed. I dread it for him, hahah I've become such a softie. Getting my animals fixed has never bothered me before. Now I'm all nervous and cant stand the thought of him being in any pain. Ah well, I shall certainly survive, and he'll be better off for it, I dont want him getting the romeo wanders and taking off after strange women (dogs)!
Baxter loves his pen, he's very content in it and we get to have more relaxed play sessions so I love it too! I have been meaning to take a video and some good pictures of the enclosure. Last time I was trying that though I kept getting interrupted there at home hehe, I will get some good shots of it though to post. We are rather proud of it. =) I have taught him the bang-bang trick per your instruction and video! =) He has that down pretty good. And over the weekend Heath was getting him to do rollover better. Nothing new since then. I have this book at home, well actually its up at heath's but it has some good suggestions!
Wow! He is big! I think Mei weighed around 15-17lbs at that time and I was freaking out that she was gonna be a gigantic Corgi. She's still the tallest Corgi I've ever seen though. You have quite a big guy on your hands. ;D
Woo Hoo!! What a good boy playing at the beach and the park and not running off!! You must have been so proud of him. Of course he knew who his mommy was ~ he loves you!! LOL. Now Bailey can be a beach bum! He is just too cute and too smart, if you lived closer I would come and doggie-nap him! LOL. Have a goiod night!! :-)
I always thought they were freckles from his bad habit of sun bathing in Texas.
That pic you have of your dog sleeping next to that monkey is hysterical~!
Oh I so wish we could join you too! Yep, pretty much in the middle of nowhere here. There is plenty of green around though. =) Don't know how long it will stay green if we don't get some rain soon!
Yes I'm very excited about the corgi picnic. I think I will have to get a video camera just for that purpose hehe! I hope you and Bailey have a great time at your meet up. And say...is it not your birthday this weekend??
Well fixing does help with the marking and raging teenage hormones and the benefits do outweigh the cons. But I know how you feel, a part of me doesn't want to take away any part of an already perfect dog. And I just dread it for him. But, I'm sure I'll go through with it as well, and though I'm sure he will NEVER thank me...he'll be better for it. =)
Oh and your welcome, hopefully you can get some good ideas from it, the steps are easy to follow. I saw some other training books on there as well. Yes I always get enough for the free shipping too! Must...have...free...shipping.
Heheh, aww Bailey is scared of the hula hoop? Poor guy, well it is black and yellow and makes a rattling sound hehe. I dont have a hula hoop...well I used too but I am pretty sure it is long gone. That would be fun though...wonder what Baxter would think of a hula hoop? Hmm...must find out. I bet you could set it on the ground while he is out playing and let him investigate it and play around it and eventually perhaps he will figure out its safe? Oh I got one of those dog recipe books when we had a book fair here at the hospital. Unfortunately I haven't made anything for him yet...but they have some great recipes in there, I hope to get to cooking for him soon. He's still being picky about his food. I dont know what else to do. I am always having to flavor it up with something like cottage cheese yogurt, or broth. He is so spoiled, and I am not taking the blame for this one, my mother and stepfather will sneak him little tidbits when they are eating. Grrr...I keep telling them to stop. How does Bailey like his Wellness? I have fed baxter twice a day since I brought him home since thats what he was used to at the breeders. I think I'm slowly going to start feeding him less in the evenings and phase out that meal eventually later on so he will actually be hungry when he eats. Which I think that is a big part of it. He's getting all he needs from his food and he's just not hungry. Though when we are eating he will make us think otherwise of course. =)
Baxter: Hey Bailey bro! Yeah they're talkin bout scrap booking...I'm sure of it! I got some new pictures up of me and my buddy Rosie duking it out at her house. We had fun, boy I was covered in drool though yo! You going to hang out with some more corgis this weekend? Dude...I'm so jealous! Tell em all I said woof.
Oh I got to tell you about yesterday...man I was so scared. I was in my hip dog yard right and I thought I'd be clever and slip out on the porch ledge and sneak out onto the porch through the railing. Man I seen those cats do it all the time.
So here I go out onto the ledge and would you believe it I can't slip through like the cats. So I'm stuck! And I look down and I freak out fuzzy bro! I was too afraid to move so I did what any pup would do...I cried. I cried and cried, my granny heard me and came running.
She convinced me to back up enough to where she could grab me. Oh man it was horrible. I kept on crying even as she carried me in the house. I was on a roll and couldnt stop! Of course it was all manly crying...I didnt sound like a sissy..really! I looked all over the house for mom, I had to tell her! But she was still at work. But my granny picked me up and held me and talked to me till I felt better. Whew...it was rough. They blocked that ledge off so I couldnt get on it anymore...but they dont have to worry...I have no intention of doing that EVER again! Peace out my homedog!
hahaha...i'm not 100% sure, but i think my trainer told me that they should be off it...pretty early. cuz its really fattening and stuffs. plus, maybe you can stunt his growth by giving him adult food instead ;D

I'll see if I can hunt up something fun! Talk to you soon!
