Rally obedience is a relatively new dog sport. It is less formal than traditional AKC obedience and really builds a relationship with you and your dog. The Novice level is done on-lead and unlike regular obedience you are encouraged to talk to your dog. There are signs that have different commands on them (36 possible signs in Novice) and the judge makes a course out of about 16 or so. You get to walk the course without your dog and ask the judge any questions you might have. Then you and your dog go out and perform the exercises. It's kind of complicated to explain here but it really is fun. It is great for Corgis because they really have to think and pay attention to you because they don't know what's coming next. You can check out the website www.apdt.com to learn more. The apdt is the organization that first sanctioned Rally titles and Merlin was the first Corgi in the country to get their Level 1 title! My husband and I have been teaching Rally at out dog club for 4 or 5 years and I keep saying I am going to stop but I just love getting people involved.

I try to train every day but it is for very short amounts of time. I may do a few sits, downs and stays and then later in the day go out and do some controlled walking and so forth. I always tell my students to do short very positive sessions with lots of treats. We also do agility so we also go out and do a few exercises for that-I have a few pieces of equipment in my yard.

Hey Silvia! Thanks for the welcome comment.... this is such a great site! Hopefully I will see you soon at a meet up!
  • Candy

Thanks Silvia! There is hope! Its always good to hear from those with multiple Corgi's introduced at different times. Bonni really do think she is the A-dog. everywhere she goes... even if the dog is 10 times her size. And Faye is not so passive herself. She's a brat. Doesnt listen, and really pushes her luck. Shell snap at Bonni, even when Bonni tries to put her in her place. When that happens, I think they may get into a fight...So I tell bonni to stop (since she listens to me).... OR should I just let them battle it out instead?? What did you and Sam do?

Thanks. I think they are great too. It is nice to see more Florida Corgi's. Have you heard about the Corgi Picnic in Melbourne on Dec 10?
  • Bill Gotthelf

There were every kind of corgi's there you could imagine. The wildest one was a r&w pem puppy about 4 months that had Blue eyes. It is so funny to see one corgi start to run and 30 running along with him. I think there were more than 80, I bet there was at least 100. There were 5 fluff's, my 3 and 2 of Tessie's sisters that live near me. Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the Welcome! I will be adding photos soon. I attended the Melbourne corgi picnic 2 yrs. ago and it was something to see with 56 corgis running around! I have to work this year so I can't make it.

thanks for the comment... yeah we were amazed at how quickly kaycee was picking up tricks when we first got her at 8 weeks.... she had sit mastered pretty much a day or two within getting her... now she can do a few more fancier tricks like put her hands against the wall (we say hands up!), spin around, play dead, jump, dance, sit like a bear, and now we're trying to see if she's smart enough to ride a skateboard :)...
  • Lauren (Duke and Daisy's momma)

Thanks! It's hard to get a pose outta him sometimes but he worked the camera this Spring in the bluebonnets.
