I have three teenage kids and I just love being a Mom to a Corgi also! I live in sunny Southern California with the three kids, three dogs, two cats and a most wonderful husband.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Sidney is our first purebred corgi and we are thrilled to have him. He was born 7/11/07. We planned to start him in agility training, but there was a long waiting list. So while waiting for an opening, we took classes for therapy dog training. As it turns out, he's a pretty good therapy dog, so we stuck with that and never got around to agility. Now he is training as a Rally dog. We love it! He's one smart little character! Oh, and he's undocked, so his beautiful tail attracts a lot of attention - good attention.
On August 30th, Sidney suddenly came up lame in his hind left leg. The next day we got xrays for him and found out he has severe hip dysplasia. On Sept 7th he had a Femoral Head Ostectomy to relieve the pain. His right hip is not in great shape either but we're hoping that with glucosamine supplements and exercise we can keep it healthy. *Update* You would never know Sid has surgery now. He moves beautifully. The water therapy and supplements have worked wonders.
Bruce is our corgi/elkhound (?) mix. We rescued him from the brink of euthanasia when he was approximately 10-11 years old (he had a day or two left to go). He's about 16 now and his only sign of his advanced age are bad teeth and slow mornings. I adore Brucie and he worships me. He's my funny short angel with a puffball tail (thanks to the elkhound side). He's about 18 now and going strong.
Chester is our "tall dog". He's a black dane/lab mix that we got from a "free to good home" ad in the local newspaper. He's also old, about 15 years old. We know his age because we've had him 14 years, and he was an adult when we brought him home! He's a very serious dog and not very affectionate compared to the corgis, but he has been a very good dog, just aloof. We can't take Chester as many places as the shorties because he does not travel well. He's almost 17 now and has definitely slowed down. *UPDATE* Chester had a sudden decline and was sent to the bridge on April 15th 2013 at the age of 17.
In February 2013 we added Connie to our family. She's a little tri corgi who was picked up as a stray and put up for adoption at our local Humane Society. She's a real sweet girl and loves to play ball. She's learning a lot from Sidney about life here. We can't believe that her family never came to claim her. She's got good manners and she gets along well with the other dogs and the cats, and everyone she meets is her best friend.
And the pack grows! In November we took in a black-headed tri who we named Copper. He and Connie were both born in 2009 and they are great buddies and a ball-chasing tag team. Copper is sweet and cuddly and eager to please.
Hi Geri and Sidney,
Thank you for the comment...Corgi's are soo cooool!
Hope all is well with you and yours...Morgan has just started to find herself...She's really come out of her shell and is a handful at times!!...But ya just gotta love 'em..Take care, and all the best from the mile high city!!!!
We also did the instinct test and followed up with some herding lessons which were a lot of fun. I haven't done to much herding training because of the distance for the class and the cost. If there was something closer to home I would be going. I have to brag as a proud puppy mom about her test. We did the test when she was almost 1 and she was the second dog to go and was a total natural. The lady doing the test ended up extending her test do use her as a demo dog because she was such a natural. My biggest regrets was that a) I didn't get to see any other dogs go before her so I couldn't appreciate all of her skills and b) I didn't video tape the test. I wonder if we can do the test again so I can get a video of her...I haven't watched your video yet but I will make sure that I do.
The other thing that I actually have done a lot with her is rally classes which she also does well at. I think that she likes showing off for the other dogs because in her mind she is superior to all the other dogs in the class.
I've always had pembroke corgies in my life--my parents started raising htem in the late fifties. So Flash is my first experience with a cardigan corgi. He is a red and white boy--in fact your guy looks a lot like him--except Flash has more white on his face, has the bigger cardi head and he has the most beautiful full cardi tail. He is my brave boy--he was bred specifically by the vet school here in MI to find the PRA gene(s)--he does in fact have PRA and has very little eyesite. He also has other genetic [problems as they probably inbred the dogs a lot to insure they had the PRA genes passed to the pups. He developed a back problem this past fall--the vet thinks it is probably DM (and poor Flash did test for having the genes for this) But Flash has such a very good attitude and we are working with a rehab specialist. He does everything we as of him to include running on the treadmill in the water (he is not too keen on this!)
My pem and cardi have such differnet personalities--they both have added immeasurably to uopr lives and I can't imagine being without either one. I really can't pick a "favorite" breed!
Hi Geri and Sidney, thanks for your welcome! You should come to Berlin one Day, its really nice! But there are not a lot Corgis...! More Poodles etc :0)
oh my, that is the PERFECT illustration of the "keel-over." Bertie used to do that to me in the city -- he knew where all the food stops were, and would just fall over if I didn't turn down the right block! It's the constant smiling that kills me. (But he's NOT spoiled, no way!)
Thanks for the welcome comment! I took that picture right after Micah's bath and she was NOT my biggest fan. she hates getting baths, and constantly licks her chops to get all the water off. I'm still trying to get video of her "goblin noises" that she makes after a bath, when she's rolling on the floor and couches trying to dry herself.
Thanks for the congrats! And thanks for your concern! Yes, we are very worried about Monster. We gave him a benadryl and he finally started giving kisses again! lol He still doesn't want to move but i think he's feeling a little better!
Thank you for the welcome! It sounds like our families aren't too different. Sally loves to play with my parents (cause she knows they spoil her ;p) but I'm the one responsible for her feeding, training, and just about everything else.
Thanks for the Twilight Zone note. I was able to find the episode and just got done watching it. I have to admit it brought tears at the end. Yep, any place too high falootin' for my dog is too fancy for me!
Thanks for the greetings...you little one looks a lot like mine. I'll try to figure out how to get a pic on here soon. I'm not very good with technology...
Where do you live in California? My daughter, her husband and their three Shelties live in Santa Clarita.
Hi! Thanks for adding the link for us. Ethel has been busy trying to figure out how to hotwire the car, so could you tell me how you do that and I'll explain to her. (I can't even figure out how to get photos into my responses/blogs either...I'm really not a computer person).
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Thank you! (Ethel is now officially embarrassed by my inabilities on the computer, and is emphasizing this by demonstrating HER ability to shove open the treat drawer with her nose. Ah well....)
Thank you for the comment! We call Luka Bolt all the time!! In fact he gets so excited over the nickname he races around the house or shows his husky side and "talks" to us!
Awww thanks for your comment :o) my kids are older,,not gone ,but older :o(,,lol 26-23-19 Cooper is my new baby now and my kids will say thay wish thay were him, even my husband has made that comment too,,,,,,
Thants to funny,,,I got a Canon xt and a 70-300mm lense worth more than all my camera's i had when my kids were little :o) what can i say,,have to get good shots of Cooper Boy....Sidney is so sweet;;got to love the corgi's :o)
Hello! Thank you for the welcome! No I haven't been to any corgi meet up, but I'd like to attend one, and get Ozzee involved with other dogs. He plays with my kitty, Mr.Busy, but he needs a k9 friend. Yea we attended kindred spirits obedience about 5-6mos ago.
Yes! That is what the shelter had posted on their Perfinder page. I think the woman giving them away didn't want the puppies to see that fate which is good; I think that's why she was giving the puppies away. He is using us as bait now. :) LOL, but he is a nippy little thing. :) Kong Toy Inventor Bless You! :)
Thank you for the welcome. I enjoyed reading the stories about all your dogs. A puppy from our first litter now lives in S. California, around the San Diego area too. Lucky dog!
Thank u Geri! If it weren't for u these pics would still be on my iphone.... Kai is so proud of hisself! Luna is so miserable.... So when is Sidney gonna get some bling...
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I see Sidney will have a birthday in a little over 4 months! YAY! I found the recipe on the internet, and confirmed that the ingredients were safe for dogs(compare to known toxic lists and vet). Trixie was happy with it but loved the yogurt the best! Even the pupperoni sticks couldn't sway her!
