I am married, and when my youngest daughter married a few months ago, decided to fill my 'empty' nest with an adopted child. Opted for a Cardigan Welsh Corgi after having a Pem years ago whom I adored. I waited 6 long years to get this boy, and he was well worth it.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
His name is Finbar, Celtic for fair headed one.... He so far is an amazing, bright little boy. Will be starting AKC puppy classes with his next week : )
Welcome! Finbar is adorable. I can't wait to see more pictures. We have a blue merle Cardi as well. His name is Finnigan. Looks like we both have a little Finn on our hands. :) Where is yours from?
That's very funny that we both have a Finn and that they are blue Cardis, what are the odds! We switch off calling him Finn and Finnigan. He answers to both. How old is yours? He's adorable. Will you be showing him or is he strictly a pet?
I just looked at your breeder's website. I hadn't heard of them before but they have some beautiful Cardigans. When we set out to find a breeder I looked at two others in California but we ended up choosing one in New Mexico. Always nice to hear about other nearby breeders in case we decide to add a 2nd one to our family sometime down the road. Thank you for sharing. :)
I can't believe how early all of her puppies ears were up. We had to tape Finn's and they were finally all the way up by about 17 weeks.
Welcome Dawn and Finbar! We're practically neighbors! Are you familiar with San Diego Corgi Meetup group? We have countywide meet-ups at dog parks once a month, and smaller North County meetups once or twice a month at the Rancho Bernardo dog park. Sidney takes classes at Kindred Spirits K9, near Gopher Canyon Rd and I-76. He's got his Canine Good Citizen tags and is now a therapy dog! Maybe you can make it to one of the meetups soon!
Wow, so you are taking classes at Kindred spirits? That's great! We've taken every class they offer there; beginning, intermediate, trick training, Canine Good citizen, therapy dog training, and even rattlesnake avoidance! They do great work there and it will show in Finbar. WE've had him instinct tested for sheep herding at K9 Action SPorts in Escondido (near the Wild Animal Park) and he did great (look for my video on my page). We've thought about agility, but my daughter, who is Sidney's primary handler, is graduating high school and has been really busy! We're hoping to try it out this fall, maybe, unless they find that they both love the therapy dog work and choose to stick with that.
Our next mini-meetup is Sunday 6/14 at the RB dog park, at 1pm. Look for the red/white Pem with the tail ;)...we'll put a bandana on him.
HI Dawn,
The big county-wide meetups are on Saturdays (I think the last Saturday of the month?) We tend to schedule RB on Sundays late enough for people even going to late morning mass (the one we like to go to), but I'll try to make the next one a Saturday. It's just that many of our North County regulars work on Saturday...but I think we could switch it off, or schedule two a month.
Same with Finnigan, his breeder said he had no visible faults he just wasn't keeping him for show because he already has a great blue merle (Finn's dad). I considered showing but decided it would probably be more stress and money than I can handle plus I'd rather not have an unneutered male in the house. :) I agree, it would be great if we lived closer so our pups could play. Whenever we have Corgi meet ups out here Finn is the only Cardigan. :)
I absolutely love the merle corgis! We have Pembrokes, so no chance of that for us anytime soon.
I am working on a hobby site (it will be eons before it's ready to roll) and would love to have more pictures of cardigans. Think you might have some good ones over time?
Hi Dawn. Your Fin is looking good. Six months old already! I still can't believe my Finn turned one yesterday. Wow!
Walking 40 minutes a day at his age is not too much. Do you walk him that much all at one or is it divided up between two walks? We were walking Finn at least that much at 6 months. Just watch for signs that it's too much such as if he keeps stopping to sit or lay down. This would indicate he's worn out and ready for a break in which case you should do multiple shorter walks. Do you take him somewhere he can run off leash? This is something Finn always enjoyed. He'd run and run until he was worn out then he'd sleep well that night! They need the exercise not only to burn off energy but also to strengthen the muscles and prevent things like hip problems. Sounds like you're doing well with him. :)
May I just say that your Finbar has completely melted my heart. If I didn't have Mab (My Blue merle) I'd say that Finbar is the most incredible dogs I have ever seen, in fact I think he is.
Hi Dawn, nice to have you as a friend. I see you have a blue merle Cardi with tan points, so do I his name is Jimmy we also have a little girl Blu/w tan pts. named Gemma. the furkids are enjoying the snow as it's the first time they have seen it. Jimmy & Gemma say hi to Finbar.
I just wanted to let you know that Finbar is part of the inspiration of me getting a cardi. I loved his picture in the mycorgi calendar! I just wanted to let you know that he is one handsome boy!
