I have had two kids call leon a chihuahua, one lady mistake him for being "the dog they had on those taco bell commercials," and one d*ck call him a cat. I blame the chihuahua thing on that disney movie they had a bit ago, so that with the kids I can excuse, the lady I politely corrected telling her "no, he's the queen's royal dog, you're thinking of chihuahuas", but the guy who thought it was funny to call leon a cat, was just being rude. He thought it would be funny to harass and then stalk me down the street with his friends just because my dog looked a little different. We also have another guy who we'll see on our walks every-so-oft who leon loves, who is convinced he's a 'Spuds MacKenzie dog'. :)

I'm a little curious, at what point does a corgi stop being sable and start being a red? When we got leon, he was labled a sable, and you could see it, but as he's grown up the sabling seems to have gotten lighter and thinner. Now it's only very light on his back, you actually have to go searching though his fur to see it, and on his ears, which is more noticeable, but only if you're actually looking.

Hey Jenny, several people have thought our little girl Chloe was a sheltie mix. She has a very narrow face for a corgi though. I will admit that while she is obviously all corgi to me, someone who didn't know the breed could easily mistake ours for a mix because her colors are just like a collie or sheltie's.

One time we were at the dog park and there was a beautiful sheltie and everyone kept commenting on how their markings were so similar despite their bodies being so very different!

Hey Stubbs...it is very common for the younger pups to have the appearance of being sable but as they grow and get their adult coats to shed all that out. Some say to have some black hairs in the coat or any black on the face is a sable but to me that is questionable. For Example..my Kiara has black on her ears and around her muzzle and throughout her body but I don't consider her a sable like Meagan. My new pup has black hairs on her back and on her face and so far am considering her a light sable. We shall see. Some pups that are real prominant as being sable are the ones w/a lot black around the face. You can see the shadowing and look at the root of the hairs as well.

Your lucky..its quite humiliating to these poor guys..kinda like you being called a dog..lol
  • Laura Jones

My new little guy is supposed to be a sable. His mom is a tri and his dad a red and white.
  • Laura Jones

I hope he stays a sable. I think they are pretty. Although I love my red and white KC too. Her and Taz have the same dad.
  • Wendt Worth Corgi's

I would say sable..here is a picture of Meagan when she was younger and shes a sable.

This is Radar Wilson he is an wonderful God send to me.I've been told he is a sable ..can anybody explain to me what makes a sable
    Thanks, Nanc
  • Brodey's Mom

I would say Radar is definitely a Sable. He has the mix of black with the red that runs from his face across his back. He is very handsome.
  • Nancy Wilson

    Thanks so much,
    Brodey is very handsome....

I don't see much black in him. If you look down at him from the top, does it look like some black hairs are scattered everywhere?
  • Teresa Kannard

As it was eplaned to me by a long time breeder, a sable by AKC standard is a red dog with black hairn but the long time standard is a red dog with a black munks cap and black hairs and even rarer is one with a racoon mask.

Hello, my name is Andrea and my dog's name is Eddie. He is registered as a Sable with White markings, but same people have said he is Red & White with Sable markings. His undercoat is black, which makes his top coat look like a very rich red color, except when he is out of coat then he looks semi-orange in color lol. But the end of his tail and most of the underside of his lower jaw is black. Feel free to look at my photos and give an opinion. ^_^ The 2 professional photos that I had taken were when he was out of coat, so you can see the difference in color the black undercoat makes.

    Hello everybody.... Happy holidays!!!

What color undercoat does sables have? Does it matter? So far Freya's undercoat is gray.
  • Teresa Kannard

Sables have black in their coat. Most corgi puppies look gray or the color muddy looking. They will not get brilliant colors til later. When you have a blond puppy they are what you call a true red because they have no black in their coat and you can tell this when they are born. They will then get a more redish coat and the blond with disappear and they will look just like the other red and whites. I will post a picture later of a litter I had with a true red, sable, red and white, and tri colored puppy all in one litter.
  • Teresa Kannard

Here are the pictures of the litter. I had all 4 colors in one litter.

  • Teresa Kannard

This is our little Max. He is a 15 month old sable pembroke with a natural docked tail. I wonder if they always have the little "pony tail" at the end when they are naturally docked.

  • Kim & Nellie

After meeting Edison last week at our first Toledo Area Corgi meet up and talking to his owner Kerstyne, I realize that Nellie is indeed a Sable Corgi. She and Eddy are actually "brother" and "sister" as they have the same parents (Their Mom is a Sable Corgi)! Thank goodness for this website or we would never have gotten together.

  • Kim & Nellie

    Thanks! We really enjoy her!
    She her..she hher....4h

  • Kim & Nellie

Grover's markings are georgeous! I've never seen the white chest fur extend all the way down the legs and paws. Too cute!

This is Cooper...my first Corgi. Retrievers have always been a part of our lives (and still are) but now that three out of four children are out of the house, I decided it was time for me to finally add my Corgi. Cooper is 15 wks old and we've had him for 2 weeks now. I am SO in love with this little guy!! He thinks Bailey- our black Lab- is a big black sheep...you can picture it. And like your beautiful Cooper, Tina, mine is also a fan of the herb garden..... Love seeing all of the pics of other Sables!!!
  • Boo Buchheit

My pup Randy is a sable Pembroke Corgi.
  • Boo Buchheit

Randy has quite a bit of black on his face and his back looks gray from all the black in his fur. His mom is a true red/white and his father is a tri. Leo looks alot like his dad but with more white. Randy looks to me like he will be sable even after growing up. Right now at about 7 weeks he is sable.

  • Brodey's Mom

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I was on here. My life has been crazy. I just lost my stepfather to cancer and now my mom needs a Corgi more than ever. She really likes the sables and would love to keep my Brodey, but I just can't give up my little boy. Does anyone know of breeders that consistently breed sables? She is in Virginia and I am in Florida. My in-laws are in Minnesota. I just need to get her a wonderful dog as stately as my step-father. He picked the name before he died. Winston. Can you help me find him?
  • Teresa Kannard

I have sable puppies just born. Most of the sabling turns up as they get older. Check out my website- laughing dawg
