...and Deborah too! Also ~ welcome to Michigan! I live about 45 miles north of Grand Rapids, but I used to live much closer to Benton Harbor. Just wait until all this weather has changed...Michigan is a great place to be! :)
You might miss Washington, but do not misunderestimate the forests of the midwest. I grew up in Duluth, MN. There's a place I loved on the UP, Porcupine Mtns. State Park, backpacking there winter and fall. There's a ridge there, looking south, with a view of Lake Superior at either end. I've seen it in full fall color. It was a centerfold spread in Audubon magazine once. The eastern mixed deciduous forests have charms that Washington cannot match. Get a bird guide (I like the Golden guides) and a good pair of binoculars. Study the plants. The West has nothing like the bird diversity of the east. Ruger would love to go birding with you; that would be a great outdoor dogwalking hobby. Consult dog locals about what they do for ticks. I've used Advantix when we go to the east side of the Cascades in spring and summer. Watch out if he develops a prey drive; you don't want him to learn about porcupines (or skunks) the hard way. Ditto coyotes.
You must have learned to love snow and cold in Colville. Get some nordic skis and make it a virtue. Al & Gwynn LOVE to go snowshoeing and skiing. Fortunately, dogs seem to love snow.
He is very well mannered. He makes me look bad most of the time LOL! I am glad that you like the Dog in the Log picture. I thought that it was a really cool shot and you are the first person to even mention it. I think you have great taste!!!
Welcome! We have a lot of favorite camping spots, Michigan is full of beautiful state parks. A favorite of mine is Mill Creek in Mackinaw City. It is a large private park and many of the sites are close together but it is on the Lake Huron shore line with views of the Mac Bridge. Across the street there are nice hiking trails in the Mill Creek historic park and you can take a ferry (with dog) to Mackinaw Island which once you get past the fudge and t-shirt shops has great hiking trails in the interior of the Island and no cars. There is a corgi meet scheduled for April 23 in East Lansing. Check out the Michigan meet up group. I also love Burt Lake Park. It has a dog area on the beach. Do you like rustic or things to do when you camp?
The meet up is just a lot of corgis at a dog park chasing each other around while the humans visit. I have photos on my page of one from last year. We had about 20 corgis there.
Thanks so much!! Your pup is so cute, looking forward to watching Ruger grow on here! What a bummer about your pics at Walmart, I cant believe the people didnt return them, knowing they werent theirs!! I agree with not deleting pics from memory cards...my hubby always wants me to, but I refuse and just buy new ones, which is quite a bit, since I take quite a bit of pictures! To justify not deleting them though, I have a digital frame that plays the pics back. :)
Hey Brittany and Ruger! Thanks for the friend invite! I know exactly where you are from! I've been to Colville before! It is completely different than Moses Lake. Everything here is so flat and no trees except what we plant ourselves. I would rather be up in the mountains. LOL
Best of luck with your schooling no matter what you decide. My suggestion is find a vet clinic that will let you shadow one of their assistants so you can get a first hand experience in a clinic setting. It will help you make the decision if you want to go into vet med. It is a tough job but really rewarding at the same time. Take care and have lots of fun with Ruger in puppy obedience! <3
awe thank you, the one on the left is Toby, he is our rescue tomorrow it will be 2 weeks. He is 7mo old, and gracie is on the right she will be a year May 14. I also have to Tri males, Nicky and Wrangler. Have a house full of little wiggle butts. Love it. You will have so much fun with little ruger, they are such a joy, and funny. They do corgi sprints in the house. All of a sudden they get these burst to run. Its funny to watch.
Thanks for the info. I'd like to do group classes because of the interaction she could have with other dogs, but I kind of want to do more targetted training that I think one-on-one would be better for. I'm trying to do agility-type training with her (if not for competition, then just for fun) and since I have never done that type of training, I am looking for good tips and methods to boost Scout's confidence in the unfamiliar obstacles.
Lots of new snow in the mountains, considerable avalanche danger. Redflowering currants in bloom, daffodils up for weeks now. Bumblebees. I put up a woodpecker box. Ornamental cherry trees blooming... petals already falling. Al & Gwynn love it; dead earthworms are in season!
Thanks! We can't WAIT for spring to really arrive here in New England. While running around in the snow was fun, we are so ready for some warm temps so the hiking, canoeing and swimming can begin again!
Thanks for the comments on my name choice for my girls. I am really lucky to have found Luna after the devastating loss of River, she's made my heart heal.
Good luck with starting your training with Ruger. I'm sure he'll be a star pupil.
thank you:) your little guy is so cute! im sorry your classes have been canceled, theres nothing more frustrating than that. the classes are wonderful though and are worth it as i am a dog trainer at petco:) in mean time of waiting teaching him some things would be great, from my experience with teaching corgis, they are extremely smart and want to please u. just working on sit and come are great until your class starts on tues. i bet he will do great!:)
i LOVE being a dog trainer. it really lets you see how the dogs think and its so fun to have a puppy class and see the light bulb go off in their head like "o i get it!" and i love to point owners in the right direction as they are always willing to learn and to do the right thing for their pet. it just so much fun and i sometimes bring teddy in as a "student" and he has a blast showing off lol i know so much more now than when i did back then and i am so thankful to have this job. i do have some good news for you, u dont have to go to collage to be a dog trainer. all u have to do is apply as a dog trainer at petco/petsmart and they teach u for 4months on how to deal with every situation, every situation is different for each dog. the best part about this is that its free. once u have worked there for a year u are officaly a dog trainer and can do your own dog trainer business if u would like:) im not going to do that but i am always willing to help someone if their dog is having problems
your welcome and thank you! thats really neat about those classes so thank you for telling me about them. that seems like a really fun program to be in and if you and your hubby work together im sure that u could run your own business :) after this move is done and i save enough money i would like to check that out. training dogs to be service dogs sounds very rewarding as right now we are training teddy to be a therapy dog. hes doing great so far but i cant wait to get him into a class that specializes in that.
in my classes we train using positive methods and i know every dog is different but i really hope that this program that you are telling me about does positive training as well. do u know by chance? if i can ovoid it i really dont want to use negative things such as a choker, those can have harmful effects
thank you so very much for all the info:) i will have to check this out as i am very interested. im happy its positive training as thats what i believe in. that is a great price for it to as at peto it costs 1,500 to train me, even though its for free for me
o yeah puppies grow up so fast so be sure to take lots and lots of pics:) teddy is doing great. if u havnt seen my page or the post i made we took teddy in to the Smithsonian museums to get some therapy training in. my husband and i and of course teddy had a blast! he loved the attention from everyone especially from the kids lol and we are about to ,move to AR next week and we have signed him up to take his canine good citizen class/test and the instructor said that teddy sounded like a perfect pupil which made my husband and i feel very proud lol
I do think the dogs enjoy variety, but y'know what? They'll settle for a walk around the neighborhood.
Look out for skunks and porcupines (Leave It!).
The great thing about hiking is: off-leash! I keep them close; that's their inclination anyway.
Hi Brittany, They changed the Corgi Meet to May 1st due to the very wet weather we have had. Hope the weather is better then and we will see you there. Bev,Sparty, and Izzy
Thank u very much:) we r training him to be a therapy dog because I want to make people who r in the hospital happy. Especially the children who have cancer and such. My heart goes out to them as I couldnt imagine going through that. We also the wounded veterans since my hubby is in the military : ) Teddy just loves people so l know this will be great for him and wear him out too lol that's awesome u r going to do agility with him! He will love it and it will wear him out so u can relax. When did u want to start taking him to agility? I bet he will do great.
