I am a former registered dietitian and pharmacy technnician. I grew up in Corvallis, OR, living in Central and South America for periods of time when my father took time away from OSU. My husband and I lived in Corvallis for 30 years before moving to Crooked River Ranch July 2006. Due to disability, am not working. Love to cook, knit and read.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
We currently have 2 corgis. Lucky was about 9 months old when rescued from a snowbank on Christmas Eve 2001, he has had back surgery after being totally paralyzed and got his new wheels 6/17/10! He has been using a ramp to get up the front steps for about 9 months. Sonny came to us 4/26/09, when his family did not want to take him with them when they moved. He was 8 and never trained, socialized or taught to play! After a year, he still doesn't play or FRAP, but no longer stays in the back room.
I have:

Thanks. I'll check out Big 5 this week. In the meantime I got them some big balls, which dish out random treats. Should keep them busy for a while.
  • Cindi

My sister is a OSU fan. So I am use to the jab's. It's all in fun! I am sorry that your Beav's loss to the Dogs. I really don't like them Huskies. hehehe The Corgi walk was a blast. You should try to make it next year. It goes to a really good cause. I wish I had an answer for getting your Corgi to like water, but I don't. All of my Corgi's have love water. I have more problems getting Tucker to stay out of it!

Hi Carol, I just took Katie off her meds. She was doing alot better towards the end she even started jumping down off the couch, which I stopped immediately. Now I turn the couch cushions all up when I leave. I told her not to do that anymore, I jsut hope she listens. she usually does tho. she has been running around alot more with ringo. he is overly active, i think he has ADD. I learned he knows how to fetch really well.
about 3 days affter I took Katie off her meds, she started moping in my room again at night. I hope I dont have to take her to a chiropractor. but if this keeps up i may have to.
But at any rate, all vet visits will have to be put off for ahwile, since I had a heart attack 2 weeks ago, had to take a week off work, without pay so I am catching up right now on bills and the mortgage. i am okay now had 3 stents put in.
hope all is weel with you!, Pat
  • Cindi

Well, one time my ex was swimming with my first Corgi, "Otis" and our two other cattle dogs. The other dogs got out of the water and then Otis got out and a lady said "what happened to your dog"? She thought he was a full size dog in the water and that something had happened to his legs. hahaha When he started swiming, it scared me for him to be so far out in the water, But he really loved it and was a strong swimmer.

Hi Carol, I thought I had sent this already, but just in case, yes I am already on nexium and pancrease, so I get them thru the co's. I simply cannot afford. so I already applied for plavix, just waiting for my app to get processed. hospital gave me a 30 day supply to start. I also have a coupon for 2 more weeks just in case,.
went to see my doc and she said it was a main artery they had put 3 stents all the way down. I jsut have to keep my blood sugar at a good level. been fighting that. even tho i lost over 30 lbs it still goes out of whack. especially now i can only excercise 5 mins a day. whoop de doo, huh?
i did do yard work yest for an hour, but it didnt make much difference. doc said 5 mins a day and i can increase 1 min each week.
I took katie off her pills but after a week, it looked like she went back to moping again and her back is real sensitive. so i have been giving her 1/2 a deramax a day. i can stretch them out doing that. they seem to help. anything more and she is sleeping all day. it seems ringo is real clumsy around her and knocks her over, and she always tries to run with hum. so he has been cooped up alot again, he misses his toys tho. i do bring him out to play eveyr night. he just loves those squeaky toys, thats all i hear, squeak squeak, constantly.
    so how are you?
  • Connie Rose

Hi Carol...thanks for the ribbon. Being new to this site, I haven't quite figured out how to navigate it yet. I just wanted to be sure to let you know I appreciate your kinds thougths and words. I hope to rejoin the wonderful world of corgi owners again sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy the pictures and stories here as I remember my wonderful Langston. Thanks again.
  • WhiteDove

    Hi Carol Rea,

YES, , she gave him to me. . .can you believe it? She couldn't care for him anymore. He's only 10 mths old and full of energy. . . .he loves his new brother and sisters and they've been playing since I brought him home this afternoon. . . .there's gonna be alot of tired dogs tonight. . . .LOL
  • Lucy & Ricky (Wendy/Jack )

That photo of Lucy drinking beer was 2 years ago and notice how lady-like her approach is. Rafa would have knocked the glass over and licked it off the deck. How are you? I've missed you.
  • Lucy & Ricky (Wendy/Jack )

Good to have you back. I've missed you and your stories. Sorry to hear about the bronchitis. Take care of yourself and feel better!
  • Cindi

Thanks Carol. My sister is a Beaver fan and she is very disapointed with them this year. On the other hand, I told her if she wanted to cheer for a winning team, it's called "GO DUCKS". hahaha Very proud of them and hope they go all the way. Tucker
  • Cindi

Dang, sorry for your Beav's loss. (not) No really I am. My Ducks won yesterday, but it wasn't very pretty. Real wake up call. Got any snow over there yet? My friends that live in Bend got some off and on last week.
  • Casey Mason-Foley

I'm sorry I just saw this (I am terrible about keeping up on websites!). My Emma certainly has a lot to say!! Thanks so much for sharing :)

    Happy Birthday!!
  • Joanna, Rainy and Calvin

Happy Birthday!! Today was also my first corgi's birthday. A great day all around!!
  • Cindi

Dang, I missed your Birthday. Hope it was a good one! Sorry about your Beav's, but it was a good game anyway. So excited for the Ducks and the State of Oregon. I think both Colleges will benenfit from this. Can't belive I just said that! :) So you still have snow? We have been cold and rainy here. My friends that live in Bend, just left for CA for 8 weeks and 65 degree weather. I leave tomorrow for Vegas and it's about 64 there. Take care, Cindi and Tucker too

p.s. Tucker slept thru the game. hehehe
  • Jessie & Alwyn

You're very welcome for the ribbon, I hope you had a wonderful birthday! Has the snowed calmed down since earlier this week? Being in MA it's been so strange for us not to have any snow! We did have about a 1/2" or so yesterday but other than that it's odd. That's so adorable that he does a "seal walk" in the snow - hilarious!! You should definitely try to post a video of that. Hope you had a great weekend!

  • Elizabeth

Thank you, Carol. :)  I'm having fun with my blog, too.  I could write pages and pages about my furry hooligans, but who has time for that?  Anyway, they help keep me grounded.

Your boys are so handsome and what a spectacular view you have from your yard!

  • Jessie & Alwyn

Hello friend, you’re more than welcome!! Ha ha, I hope you husband finds himself busy throughout the day with projects and hobbies that he’s always wanted to start or complete before his retirement (congrats to him!). If he spends his days baking I hope he makes some delicious treats for you, Sonny and Lucky. I’m lucky on my end as my fiance is a fantastic cook and baker - I wish the same for you! Pomegranates...mmmm! I love em but they’re so much work and I end up wearing half of it, lol! It’s definitely worth it! My goodness, I’ve been watching the news over the past couple weeks seeing how much snow everyone has been getting and WOW! You’re right in that Minnesota has been pummeled with several feet of snow. I know a couple who live there and they’ve said it’s been horrendous with the amounts they’ve gotten. We’ve had frigid temperatures here and the rest of the week will continue to be the same. We did have about an inch of snow yesterday into this morning, I like that amount as opposed to the mass accumulation. Alwyn LOVES the snow - it’s cute to see him frapping around the yard! I must admit I can’t wait for us to have a huge storm and see him bunny hopping and getting lost in the snow.

  • Elizabeth

Oh dear; I hope no injuries to you after the fall.  Seems this winter is proving to be monsterous so far (and it's technically still fall).  It's snowing in Central VA right now and will turn to ice tonight.  My kids (both 2- and 4-legged) think it's WONDERFUL, but I don't know.  People around here get crazy driving in winter weather and our grocery stores will sell out of milk and bread this morning. (We're only supposed to get 3-4 inches of snow, but you'd think a blizzard was coming.)

I bet the view from your house is even more incredible with snow everywhere, but just like here, I'm sure the snow gets old after your stuck in it for a while.

  • Jessie & Alwyn

Jeez, it sure seems as though you can’t get a break from all of that snow and ice! That’s too funny that Lucky slid down his ramp - I think I’d fall over laughing if Alwyn did that. It’s funny how snow seems to bring out the best in their FRAPPING abilities. I’m glad that your Sonny has found the joy of doing so. Ha ha, maybe he has an insta-FRAP button on his butt as Jer has discovered. Alwyn goes nuts when we take him out in the extreme cold, let alone when there’s some snow on the ground. He’ll bounce around the yard and driveway as if he can’t control his happiness.  I hope you were able to find a heater for the pole barn - do you raise animals in there or use it for other work? Stay warm my friend!

  • Jessie & Alwyn

HA, I love the idea of a sign on his butt about the insta-FRAP button and one around his neck asking that he not get any hand outs. That stinks that Sonny is gaining weight - is he taking more of Lucky’s food during feeding times? About the rabies shot, do you have an animal clinic or a think Petco or Petsmart in your area? They may do rabies shots at a discounted rate plus you’d be able to shy away from your vet. giving you the third degree. I’d love to see the photos of Lucky making corgi angels in the snow, please post it when you have a moment! I’m very anxious to take photos of Alwyn playing in our first big snowfalls. Not that I’m complaining at all, but usually by now we’ve had quite a bit! I’ll keep you updated my friend!

  • Anne Pinkerton

Hi Carol, Lucky & Sonny! Nice to hear from you! Your boys are beautiful and I'm so impressed how you've helped them both. Losing weight seems easy by comparison! All I can tell you about getting the pounds off is that a strict diet of wholesome dog food combined with lots of exercise and play and only vegetables for snacks works wonders! But as a dietician, surely you know all that. Discipline is key! And so hard when they look up with those sweet brown eyes! Best to you!
  • Anne Pinkerton

I truly believe that, left to their own devices, corgis would eat constantly. (I'm also convinced that they have learned to communicate/conspire with cats for their own benefit!) This is why they need us! I'm so sorry to hear that it is hard to get Sonny enough exercise (for you and for him). Any chance there's a neighborhood kid who you could pay $5 a day to take him on a good long walk?
  • Anne Pinkerton

Well, it's great that Sonny is starting to play - perhaps with toys he can exercise more in the house. Poor baby - it is a mystery as to what made him so anti-social. It makes me feel bad for his early life (and very glad for him now!). You're right that you never know what to expect with a rescue - Hank was four when we got him and the paperwork only said he was afraid of thunder - nothing more! That turned out to be true, but he was well-adjusted otherwise from the beginning, so we were very lucky. Trixie was only 10 months old, and despite having been a pregnant stray on the streets of Arkansas, she came to us pretty happy too - more shy at the beginning, but now, downright bossy! They bring so much joy even with their issues. I can hear my husband complaining that Hank is underfoot while he is making dinner, just waiting to see if something will fall!
  • Joanna, Rainy and Calvin

Huzzah!  My dad has some of those boxes to donate to corgi-aid for their November auction.  Do you think I should only send them corgi ones?  Or should I also send them some pirate ones for the kiddo's who don't like corgis? (although, the kids that don't like corgis I don't think I want to know!)  What do you think??
  • Amy

Hi Carol. I just joined here and am not sure how I will keep up with all the "Social" sites. I enjoyed our chat too. I got to the chat last week to late and everyone had left.  The Wheel Corgi group on Yahoo is a great place. To learn and share. We share a common bond and a love for our Wheel Corgis.

Thank you for your comment on Llyr's story.  It was emotional for me to write, but I wanted to share. The Daily Corgi Drive for 5 for DM Research is bringing in a lot of money. $3340 as of 2:30 EST today! Amazing! Check out Laurie's latest post:

Hugs to Lucky and Sonny and thank you for the gift!

Hi Carol,  How are things in Oregon.  Haven't seem you around the site lately.  Are your boys doing well.  We are having such nice sunny days I hope spring is around the corner.  The tulips are just starting to peek through.  The boys even went in the lake last weekend (not for long) but the water is still COLD.
  • Roger/Laurie

I am lucky my husband just spends time on the golf course.  I don't play when it is cold and windy or hot so I only play nice spring and fall days. I am going to Spokane next month for a few days.  Then I am driving with my sister back to North Carolina.  She is moving here....that is so wonderful because the boys love her and I will have a dog babysitter whenever we need it.  She will be living with us until her house sells in Spokane, then she will buy one here. Hope she picks one very close.
  • Amy

Hi Carol! I missed the chat on WC's yesterday. How are you doing? Llyr is doing well. I just have not had much computer time lately. I have to get better at organizing my time!

Thank you Carol...I am keeping 2 of those pups..a male and female. I've waited 2 years for this litter. I've also been getting Bruiser out to some shows..his first one was in KY a couple of weeks ago and he got a RWD..this past weekend he was in PA and got WD and BOW. This coming weekend he is off to a MI show. Hope he does well. Took Lainey, his sister, to conformation class tonight and she did awesome. I hope the girls do as well as he at shows! How have you been?
  • Rees Newton

Silver lake , christmas valley, and fort rock are all in the same community. We are in central oregon but barely :-)
  • Zigward & Kimberly

    Thank you for accepting:)
  • Katy

Your corgis are just sweet, they both look so happy and healthy :)

  • Jane Christensen

Happy Birthday Carol!!!!! Long time no see...how the heck are you????

  • Wendt Worth Corgi's

Thank you...I was very happy how quickly and easily it was to set them and have no one move but look at me with full ears.

  • Tomahawk and Fences

I'm sorry to hear about that, it's a horrible feeling knowing that they may have ended up with someone who doesn't know how much effort and patience it takes to take care of these little furrbabies. Let's hope that the new owners look up and educate themselves on what it takes to take care of a corgi. Thank you for commenting and letting me know that you have gone through this situation as well. Best luck and wishes with your beautiful corgis!

    Hello there,

Thank you for the info about Corgi Aid. I will look into it. Comet did not actually pass on from the effects of DM.  A couple of days before Christmas in 2011, we put him down because of seizures. The second seizure had affected his movement. He had a hard time eating.  The vet suspected that he had a lesions on his brain.  Prior to his DM diagnosis, he was being treated for cancer. Comet had surgery on his left rear foot to remove a cytoma.  He was on oral chemo for about 10months and became cancer free.  Comet was born with poor vision. When he was 8, we had decided to have a prosthetic implant in his left eye.  He was suffering from severe glaucoma.  My husband and I had called him our little energizer corgi.  Despite all his health problems he just kept going and going. Never complained. Always reminded us to give him his medication if we forgot.   He lived a happy 13 years!

Thinking of you and your corgis.
  • Tracy & Sir Bentley

Hello there. CorgiAid received our donated cart today.  The cart will be going to an elderly lady whose vet recommended that she put her corgi "Annie" down.  Annie still has a lot of energy in her. Good to know that we will be helping someone else out.  How are Sonny & Lucky?

  • Jane Christensen

    Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you???????

  • Tracy & Sir Bentley

    Hi Carol:

Just checking in to see how you, Lucky and Sonny are doing.

  • Krystal Wagner

Thanks I just joined the Wa state Corgi board. It's so nice to have such support. I am actually looking at plans and such for a wheelchair. My boyfriends grandfather is going to build him one. I hope it makes a difference. I just feel so bad that he is laying around all the time.

  • Krystal Wagner

I will look into that too. I feel so overwhelmed with all of this. This website is a huge help, finding people that have such great advice and encouraging words. He started his chemo the night we found out, so on Tuesday night. His lymph nodes have gone down to 1/4 the size they were. He is doing okay at the moment. I am just so worried about when it starts to get worse. I constantly worry. I am taking him to a specialist on Tuesday to get some sort of prognosis. Duvall is a little East of Redmond. Do you know where North Bend and Carnation are? Duvall is north of Carnation. Whidbey Island is not all that far. I used to live up North in Bellingham. I am going to go look at Corgiaid right now. Thank you so much. I hope Lucky enjoys having mobility again!

  • Krystal Wagner

Thanks I am going to measure him tonight. He is a trooper so I am going to push for the 2 years! In hopes he is comfortable and enjoys every minute of it! I am seeing the oncologist on Tuesday and I will for sure update everyone. I will check out that book too. Thanks again. :)

  • Natalie, Lance &Tucker

Carol, I am so sorry to read that your pups have gone to the rainbow bridge.  (((((Hugs)))))

I know how hard it is, our cardigan welsh corgi, Lance went to the rainbow bridge five months ago yesterday, so very hard.  You gave your pups a good life, we never have enough time with them.

  • Jane Christensen

Oh Carol, I am so sorry for your loss...I can only imagine the heartbreak.

I am no longer breeding. I wanted to breed Sage but I can't find a good enough male for my sweet girl...so I may not be carrying on the bloodline. This will be the last year I would even consider breeding her before she gets too old.

My rescue Teddy is getting older(about 11) and Wynn is over 9 with a bladder stone. Although they are in fairly good health...I just wish Corgis could live much longer...

Take care and it was great to hear from you!

  • Jane Christensen

Carol, I will check the breeder out this eve. I'm getting ready to leave and go babysit grandchildren for 4 days:) Sage is coming along to help me! Wynn seems to be getting better but we had to add potassium to his new bladder stone diet and then he ran a fever and is also on anitbiotics...I can't imagine how difficult it must have been trying to take care of 2 aging corgis in carts and having surgery...lucky for them they had you so they could have a good life. I hope you find the perfect pup...
