Another reason to double check your vet
There are always a lot of questions about illnesses and if someone should ask their vet about an issue. It's always a good idea in my mind.
The nice woman down the road got a new puppy about a month ago because her first corgi is about to go. It was the cutest little ball of fire that all I can think of is when he met Roxi and fought against his leash in a wigglesquirm to get to her.
That puppy got sick over time and finally she had to take it to the emergency care since (of course) that day her normal vet was closed. (they only close one day a week). They ended up doing a surgical procedure that wasn't needed causing the puppy to pass away... in the end they found out that all the puppy needed was medication for a few days.
Basically the moral I feel of this story is to get a second opinion. While vets try their hardest to help our loved ones - especially going into a surgical procedure if you don't know that vet very well I would get a second opinion first. I know some situations there is no time but I feel if they took that pup earlier on during those first few signs he could have been saved. (and no this is not blaming the parents - I know they love their corgi children very much and maybe there wasn't any real good signs beforehand)
Another good idea perhaps is to have a standby vet that may have good reviews but is a little farther off the path just in case something similar happens.
I dunno I was just heartbroken to hear about this... I couldn't wait to see how his little corgi attitude developed :)

Thanks for the post Avyon! I have worked in the medical field for a long time, all I can say is not all Vet/Docs are equal, if you would shop around for a mechanic, please do the same for your little ones :)

I totally agree on getting a second opinion. My vet has an on-call service, so if you have a problem off hours, a vet will call you to discuss the problem. I needed to take Theo to the animal ER two weeks ago (he's ok, just a bug in his tummy). They ended up wanting to run a bunch of tests that I didn't think were necessary, so I was able to talk to my vet to see if I should do them. It worked out well.

I feel terrible for your neighbor. We had an emergency situation a few years ago and needed to get to the vet, The propane truck ran over Basil and his pelvis was broken. Our regular vet was out of town and we had to go to another. We got lucky and our experience with the "back-up vet was very good and now we have two vets. It has paid off for us more than once! I ask that they share records on vaccinations and each has different areas of expertise, but I trust both of them. There was a situation one time when Basil and my daughter were injured in a dog attack. We had to take my daughter to the hospital and could only use a local vet for Basil. We ended up having to take him to our standby vet to have his "repairs redone" because the local vet did a horrible job and our regular vet was away. It pays to have people you can trust...unfortunately both of our vets are about 45 miles away, but they will compare notes on issues when I ask--peace of mind.

Good post. We are fortunate that Patti's employer (a vet) is excellent and very well versed on Corgis. The idea of finding a second "back up" vet is a good one. Over one holiday weekend, Patti's vet was out of town and one of our Catahoulas got VERY sick with the doggie flu. Honestly, we thought we would lose her. Working for PetSmart, we have a vet in-house. Fortunately, the particular vet at our Banfield is wonderful and caring. I told her of Ayla's condition and she immediately told her staff to stay and Patti brought Ayla in. It was closing time, but that didn't matter to the doc. Without her care, I know we would have lost Ayla. Our regular vet, Patti's boss, was heartsick that she wasn't in town when we needed her, but I know we were blessed to have a great back up vet.
