I think Ein would make a great therapy dog because he is so friendly, but I am unsure how to get started. I've checked the TDI (Therapy Dogs International) website, and the closest place they are doing testing any time soon is a ways away. You'd think they'd have testing in Atlanta, but no.

There are only two local therapy groups that don't say that the dog has to have passed a TDI test. One requires you send your dog to obedience school, which I can't afford to do. I emailed the other one and told them that Ein and I were interested in joining the group, but it's been several weeks and I haven't heard back from them.

Any suggestions on where to go from here and how to look into it?

Get your Canine Good Citizen (CGC) for starter, it is a base for pet therapy, once you've got that, you can go on and join the Delta Society. All pet therapy dogs must go thorough training and pass the tests with flying colors. Don't get discouraged if you didn't pass the first time, sometimes older dogs makes better therapist :)
The Delta Society doesn't require that your dog have a CGC, but I recommend it, since the skills portion of the Therapy Dog evaluation is basically the same thing. Timmy is a registered therapy dog with Delta Society and we will be working to advance our skill level in the near future to include working with women and children in shelters.

Delta is a wonderful organization and heavily involved with research into the human-animal bond. You can read our story in the therapy dogs group here on MyCorgi.
I love that the Delta Society not only does therapy work but also educational. We could all stand to learn more about our animal brethren and the bond we share with them.
