Okay, so I bet you read that title and went: "WHAT? Theres no WAY her corgi is a reluctant eater!" Well, he's not, it's my dachshund who is and this is more of a question for people who have a corgi and another breed or really, just know anything about it b/c it's getting frustrating for me!
So, I think I got Korben when my dachshund was about 3 1/2 (He is going to be 5 now this year). His routine for eating before was: I put a full bowl of food out and maybe 1 or 2 days later, it would be empty and I'd fill it up again. My dachshund was/is kind of a morsel eater, just nibbles on food all day.
Well, I got Korben and I had the habit of filling the food as I always did and found out very quickly that I couldn't b/c he inhales the food if there is any around and my poor dachshund wasn't getting any! So, now the routine is that I feed Korben about 3/4 of a bowl and then when he is finished, I give Duncan 1/2 a bowl and then Korben can have whatever Duncan doesn't finish. (Which, my dachshund always has left overs!) Well, we've been doing this for a year now and it works pretty well, but Duncan is getting worse and worse about it. When I feed him, I have to literally sit and watch him eat (or not eat) and everytime he tries to walk off, i have to encourage him to go back and eat some more. (Theres also the fact that he wont even think to eat unless I tell him to do it. With Korben, he hears the food go in and 2 minutes later its gone) But some days, like today, no matter what I do, I cannot get him to eat! He'd just much rather come sit in my lap or find a blanket to dig himself into. I think if it were up to him, he would cuddle 24/7 and just starve to death.
It got a little better b/c I found out that he didnt really like the food that I was feeding both him and Korben, he actually liked a brand that my parents feed their dogs. So, now I feed Korben one brand and than I give Duncan half of the old brand and half of the new brand (mostly only b/c this is a pretty recent change and I dont want to upset his tummy too much) I dont really think it has anything to do with Korben either, b/c if anything, having Korben waiting to eat his leftovers is more of a motivator for him b/c he's very protective of his food. (So, he'll tend to eat or pretend to eat his food if Korben gets too close) Either way, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get him to eat? Or is it an issue that I should talk to my vet about?
