Just out of curiosity, how many of you fly with your corgis? I have never flown with a pet, and I would love some insight into the process. Is it expensive? Do you do it because you want your corgi to be with you, or out of necessity? Do you recommend it? Do you have a favorite airline when traveling with your companion? My husband and I fly to other states to visit family at least once a year. I've always thought it would be nice to take at least one of our dogs with us sometime.

Hi Heather,

I just flew with Butters this past Christmas.  I was leaving for two months and not bringing my pup was not an option.  Unfortunately, she's a big gal for her age so she had to go underneath the belly of the plane.  The word "nervous" did not even come close to how I was feeling for my little girl.  I flew with Delta from Norfolk, VA to Seattle, WA and then back again.  I did manage to only have one layover and it was an hour and a half.  I was a little nervous with possible flight restrictions because the weather was cold at the time.  But thank goodness, it warmed up both days I flew.  I did have everything ready: her crate appropriately sized, food and water dish, vet check, extra food, and directions on the crate.  With Delta they have these little tickets that actually rip off the crate once you are on board to let you know that the dog has been loaded.  Only the cargo crew can rip this off, and then bring it to your flight attendent.  And I also had the flight attendents notify the pilot so he knew he was carrying special cargo.  Butters did great.  She was her happy spunky self the minute I picked her up.  Plus, no accidents in the crate.  Also, I did zip tie the crate for extra security, but you can't do this until TSA clears you.

Now I must say I wouldn't do this just for a short trip.  Staying with family and friends is probably the better option if just for a week or two.  But I went for two months.  It also can be pricey.  It was $200 each way, so $400 in the end.  I will be taking Butters with me to Germany in a couple of weeks.  I will be visiting Mom and Dad for a few months.  I have already checked into it, and I will need her rabies certificate and an international vet check.  Keep in mind for internationaly, only certains vets are certified to do this.

Hope this helps!!  I know it is a scary concept but with some prayers it should be alright if you do plan on flying.  I come from a military family, and always had a family dog.  None of our dogs have ever had any issues flying all over the world.

For all you flyers out there, I was wondering if any of you had problems with flying your corgis in the actual cabin? I don't have any plans for flying with my corgi any time in the near future but I just want to know in case I have to fly with him. He's not very good with riding in cars (some barking and a lot of whining) so I'm wondering if he'll be the same in an airplane.
Hi Dora, there were several in cabin experience on page 1.
