Illinois Corgi Picnic

Sunday, September 11, 2011

Noon to 5pm

Friends Forever Dog Park, Freeport, Illinois

Potluck Lunch

Welcome Corgi Lovers!

Everyone is invited to join us for an afternoon of Corgi fun!

We will be meeting Sunday, September 11 at Friends Forever Dog Park in Freeport, Illinois.  This 10-acre park includes an agility course, an area just for smaller dogs, and a huge pond. The park is fenced so your dog can run, play, socialize off leash and go for a swim! This park was chosen by Pet Fancy Magazine as one of the top dog parks in the country!

Check it out!   http://members.petfinder.org/~IL124/dogpark/index.html

There will be a potluck lunch.  Plan to bring something to share with the group.  I hope there are some good cooks out there!  Otherwise, pick up some potato salad, brownies, or picnic food from your favorite grocery.  Also, bring your own drinks and table service (plate, silverware, napkin, etc.).  Other items you might want to bring are lawn chairs, coolers, sunscreen, dog towels, etc..  Whatever you do, don’t forget the Corgis!

To enter the dog park each participant must show a current rabies tag and proof of current vaccinations for each dog.  DHLP is required.  Bordetella is recommended, but not required. There is a $5 fee per dog for a one day pass.  Daily passes are available at the information booth or in the shelter office the day of the picnic.  No puppies under the age of 4 months are allowed in the dog park.  There is a maximum of 2 dogs per adult.  To read more information about the Friends Forever Dog Park rules or to download the form for admittance prior to your visit, go to the following link. http://friendsforeverhs.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/dog-park-con...

The Friends Forever Dog Park is located at 966 Rudy Road just south of Freeport, Illinois. Watch for the signs on Highway Route 26.  The Friends Forever Humane Society is a shelter for homeless animals which is also on the premises. Please bring an item to donate to their shelter.  A list of suggestions from the shelter is at the following link.  http://friendsforeverhs.org/donate_p/donate-goods/

As long as I can get the day off work Simon and I should be able to go. Freeport isn't too far away from me.
don't forget to rsvp if coming!  hope to meet lots and lots of corgis and their peeps!

We can definitely make it.  What needs to be brought to the meetup (never been to one of these before)?

I've never been either! I think we are trying for a potluck, maybe a picnic. bring our own drinks and utensils. Maybe an item to donate to the animal shelter that runs the freeport dog park.  I think our very helpful Lisa (LA Stewart) is firming up plans and getting details.  As soon as she  knows anything, details will be posted!

The most important thing of all to bring- THE CORGIS!!!!!!!!!!!!  =)

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

It is funny that you said, "The most important thing of all to bring- THE CORGIS!!!!!!!!!!!! =)" because I was writing up the event today and I wrote about bringing chairs, etc.  Then I added, "Whatever you do, don’t forget the Corgis!"  I guess GREAT MINDS think alike!

I have only been to one of these picnics and someone else was in charge.

However, I am trying to get all the info together to write it up as an event. I wrote the woman at Friends Forever Dog Park a second E-mail today saying that we were definitely coming.  I am waiting on her to write me back about EZ-Ups and such.

For now I would say bring lawn chairs and a cooler for your drinks and such. Bring drinks and table service items (forks, plates, napkins, spoons for serving your items) for your own family. That way no one is charge of buying all the utensils especially when we don't know how many we will need. Bring a dish to share for the potluck. Or bring a couple things if you have a big group attending.

Also, you will need $5 for each dog plus their shot records from the vet.  They want proof of DHLP & Rabies.  That is all standard stuff.  Dogs must be 4 months old or older.  Limit of 2 dogs per each adult.

This talks about registration.. http://friendsforeverhs.org/dog-park/registration/

(There is a link on that page to download rules and also to get the form to register.

You can copy it and have it filled out ahead to take with you or just get one that day.)

Since this dog park has an animal shelter there as well.  I thought it would be a good idea to ask everyone to bring an item to donate to the shelter to help the homeless animals.  This is optional, of course.  They have a list of items that they are always in need of on their web site.  Purina food products, treats, paper towels, bleach to name a few.

I excited that we are making progress again.

thank you so much for taking over! i really appreciate it and it seems like you've got everyhting down. excited to meet you!

Oh, I have to add...

Corgi siblings are invited too.  You know... beagles, pugs, mutt puppies, etc.

Haha, just took down my post from 15 minutes ago because I see LA Stewart answered all my questions. I am psyched about this!

I just checked out your page and saw Leena's pictures and trick video.  She is a real cutie.  I can't wait to see her.

By the way, I saw your discussion about weight.  My Wynne is 2 years old and weighs 23 pounds. She eats a lot more than our boy, Will, but Wynne is a runner.  She gets pure joy from running and so she can eat more.

I hope your Leena loves to run.  I think she and Wynne could have some fun together at the Corgi Picnic.  See you there!

I found my dog's vaccinations record, and there's a stamp on the front from our vet, but there's really nothing "signed."  Is this usually proof enough for dog parks?
I plan to go to the vets office and just ask for a print out of the dogs' shot records.  I have done that before for training classes.  I think they are used to it.
