Since I'm looking to get a corgi within the next year or so, I was wondering a) how much it cost to buy your little fur baby and b) about how much a month/year do you think (or know) that you spend on him/her? I need to know how much money I need to save up and how much money I should budget for once I get my own little fur baby. :) Thank you for any insight you can give!

Puppy prices will vary depending on your area and perhaps your pup (fluffies might go for less, etc.). The cost per month will depend on training and activities you choose to do (ie. daycare vs dog park).

From Breeder: $800 to $1200

Toys: $100-200 total We haven't bought new toys in a while, tennis balls/frisbees/antlers all last a long time.

Daycare: $60/month (1-2 times/week)

Food: $20/month

Medical: $100/visit (3 non-planned visits/year)

Vaccines: $100/year (she is UTD on boarding shots too)

Heartworm/Flea: $20/month*

Insurance: $20/month (emergencies only)

Training: $60/6week course

*More expensive for heartworm preventative because Kaylee is always at the edge of 25lbs and we can't buy larger packs.

The cost of a puppy will vary depending on the breeder and where you live. In California, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club member puppy will run you about $1,000. A reputable non-club member (like a hobby breeder) puppy will be around $700-$900. I can't speak for other areas though, but I'd imagine it's similar.

In addition to the cost of your pup, I'd say have $3k on hand to spend on vet bills, supplies, and incidentals. The first year is very expensive. I got my corgi as an adult so she was much less expensive that a puppy---even so, I ended up spending about $1200 on her the first couple months I had her.

After you get through all the major shots and neutering/spay, the cost of upkeep isn't too bad, barring any emergencies or  unexpected vet visits.

Now, our biggest ongoing expenses are food and parasite control (we use Trifexis). The dog food we buy costs $50 for a 15 pound bag and lasts about 6 weeks. So...a little over $400 a year for dog food? And the trifexis is $200 a year. Yearly check up and shots runs about $100. So about $700/a year for a healthy adult.

What brand/type due you feed that costs that much?

Orijen dry

Ah, I had no idea. I haven't looked into Orijen. Thanks for the info.

yep, the FAQ has a great overview of costs, and a lot of it depends on your area for things like breeder costs and vet costs. vets in CO, for example, very very cheap compared to MA.

plan to save NOW build up a large nest egg if you can for incidentals, health costs, etc.  puppy savings accounts are great, you can decide on your own if pet insurance is right for you but know that most every provider has you pay upfront and you are reimbursed, so savings are great for that also.

you can get a bunch of basic (non-size specific) supplies now throughout the year and read through care and training books, we've spent a boatload on puppy costs since last march (we brought our puppy home this february) but it's also first year.  and actually, based on our puppy's diet, we're saving a lot on food, it's averaging out to be very affordable — our cat food is way more expensive.

and i'm OCD so i track EVERY SINGLE PUPPY-RELATED EXPENSE so i know how much we're spending on food/treats/toys/vets/etc. can gauge the cost per day of food, when we need to buy new things, how long things are lasting, what his favorite treats/toys are, etc.  not a single penny is spent on our pup that isn't tracked and we know how much we're spending per item so we know roughly what should be saved for vet, what should be saved for training, etc.

ALSO it helps us track where we buy things and what prices are (i've seen some fluctuations on some items we replenish) and which vendors are the best.

and because i started thinking about it, i was like 'how much have we spent on straight medical costs this year?'

and it's:

Vet Only Expenses:  $308.36

but we also get a free exam for machete from the AKC and because our vet is apparently part of the network (neither i nor the vet knew about it, but we just got the cert in the mail)

but that total includes 3 visits, fecal tests, heartworm meds, and now flea treatments all rolled into one.  i'm comfortable with this (it's practically nothing in vet fees) but it's also early days, so we know to be prepared.

The fact that you track everything is BEYOND AWESOME. haha. I do that with a lot of other things in my life also because I want to know exactly what things will cost in the upcoming year/month so I can budget accordingly. Is there any possible way that you could create a template of your spreadsheets? You mentioned that you had various spreadsheets tracking costs on the blog post mentioned by Ingrid & Ein above.

i probably could make a template. we had it all on one sheet, but it's in google docs so that the boy and i can both work on it/view it easily.

google docs has issues with large spreadsheets with excessive rows so each item/subject has a tab and there's a summary sheet that references every other worksheet to keep a running tally of everything.  i'll take a look and see if i can blank out a copy of ours and keep the formulas intact.

Very good idea to use Google Docs so you and the boy can work on it/view it easily. Even if you can't make a template, maybe you can get a screenshot of the pages so I can get a general idea of what it looks like and figure it out from there? :) Thank you so much!

Here's a blanked out template:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12068261/First%20Year%20Puppy%20Costs%20Te...

I threw in some sample data on each sheet for the first line info as an example. Right now the formulas account for the first 66 rows of items per subject (as in 66 treats, or toys or whatever) we haven't gone past a few items per sheet yet, but obviously if you do, adjust accordingly.

the Misc. tab is where i put things like training costs, vet fees, etc. anything 'miscellaneous', really.

we have monthly logs for all of machete's meals, bedtimes, car trips, walks (mapmydogwalk is a GREAT app!), training, and potty breaks (a godsend during housebreaking) and i usually archive after a month as well.

i plan on downloading our completed file after the first year, and just starting up again for year two.

if you have any questions, feel free to ask, but it's pretty straightforward, and the first sheet summarizes all of your supplies/everything TOTAL, but each sheet has its own running total as well.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! :)
