I just had to tell people who will understand -- but I just found a tick, on me -- nestled in and latched on, of all places, my bellybutton! Needless to say, the Tick Key doesn't fit in there, so tweezers had to be used. When I discovered it, I started leaping around the house, flailing my arms and shouting, "Tick! Tick!" Which of course caused a bark-a-palooza and Corgis racing to the windows, answering, "Where? Where?" I hate ticks. I check the dogs so carefully all the time, but I sometimes forget to check me -- won't make that mistake again. Argh. ARGH.

Eww...I'm sorry! I had to laugh at the mental image your post gave me, though. I'm glad everyone is OK now!
Haha. I know exactly what you mean. My boyfriend found a tick on him after our last hike with Ofie and we found 3 ticks on her within the subsequent days. Gladly I didn't find one on myself - doesn't mean there wasn't one, though. I got Lyme Disease last fall from a tick I never discovered so I'm very paranoid.
Mariana, how do you feel having Lyme Disease?
Oh, thanks for asking! Gladly they caught it in time and treated it with antibiotics. I had to take huge pills thrice a day for a month. It made me terribly sick. Before I was diagnosed I felt terrible: lethargy, headaches, neck pains (big indicator), muscle aches, knee pain. The doctor said I didn't have to go back in after the treatment to test again, that it would be cured, so I didn't. I felt so much better after the treatment but am sometimes paranoid that I might still have it - still have pains and lethargy every once in a while. But I think it's just a remnant of when the disease was still in my body.

But if you don't catch it in time - within the first 3 to 6 months - it can never be cured. And in that case, the muscle degeneration can lead to major problems, including physical disabilities. You basically become myalgic throughout your entire body. Also, once it reaches your brain you begin to become slightly psychotic and delusional. In the end it could very well kill you. But there are many ways to treat the symptoms and to treat the disease as a whole - some of which are herbal and some of which are medicinal.
i would do the same thing... i would really freak out.
Oh relax. They're just bloodsucking ectoparasites that carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and various other nasty rickettsial diseases and can live in suspended animation for 8 years in a dry box and then leap out for prey when a small amount of ammonia (simulating animal urine smell) is injected into the box (think how long they can live in your sleeping bag in its stuff sack). They're everywhere, billions per acre, hungrily lurking about, waiting to sink their infective hypodermic fangs into us where we're least expecting and can neither see nor reach. We're basically at their mercy. They're only trying to make a living, as are we all. Only we can protect our pets from these pestiferous vermin.
Hope this is reassuring.
If not, just go to my website at http://bloodsuckingparasites.rus.com, where we've having a 2-for-1 spring sale on Advantix, Frontline, and Wolffie's Miracle Snake Oil Tick Cure (costs more but worth it -- it kills bedbugs, roaches and mosquitoes, too). Then, rest assured.
;-)
Eight YEARS? Argh. Okay, now I can't sleep, lolol.
Oh man John...you have furthered my freak out!
YUCK! I had no idea! Luckily, not many ticks where we live... only if we go up into the mountains, but even then we've never had one. There were ticks when we lived in Nebraska, though. Nasty little things.
Ew.. I bet everyone is checking their belly buttons now. Even I did and I live in an area that doesn't have many ticks. I'm glad I live in Phoenix...
Does Orlando count to have ticks? Lyme disease freaks me out!!!!!
We found ticks on Dee Dee several times when we lived in Orlando. You don't see them if you are just walking your dog on sidewalks, but if you let your doggy run in the field, I would check it very carefully afterwards. We found them when we used to let her run around the field near the airport... before they started building Wendy's & Walgreens!
