ok first off let me say i'm very embarrassed as i keep a spotless house & i feel like i have a filthy home all because of this odor.
how do i get rid of this urine odor. i think it is the carpet because i steam clean my carpet weekly & for a day or so after it smells better.
from what i understand (we are renters) there was a family that lived here before us that had a whole truck load of cats that used the whole house as a bathroom. there has always been a slight odor to the house esp when it gets really humid or really hot, & this is even before we got our corgi's. well i think that between that & the puppies when they were going through potty training (even though i steam cleaned it up after their accidents) that it has become an issue. i'm not sure what to do any more, i steam clean the carpets weekly & i use a pet stain & odor soap in it. i just used Urine Gone (the whole bottle, but i don't know if it got down to the pad) in hopes that the enzyme in it will kill the odor. any other ideas, i'm going completely loony trying to put an end to it, i'm extremely obsessive about having a clean home & i can't deal with this, i have never had this problem before & i have had many dogs before that i had to potty train. i can't afford to change the carpet & the landlord probably won't either unless he uses our deposit which i don't want him to do cause that is my father-in-laws money. HELP!

i wish we were long term renters but we will b moving again in a year & a couple months, military life ya know. we have a good relationship with our landlord so ultimately i could ask for his help but i don't want to run the risk of him saying it was all the dogs fault & me not being able to have my girls. next week i'm gonna have someone from the carpet cleaning place to come assess the damage. i'm hoping i can get away with just replacing the padding.
i just hate this cause i feel embarrassed & i know that i'm trying really hard & that the house came with this issue but still i just can't help but feel bad. i hate hate hate hate a dirty home.
ok so update, i talked to our landlord about the problem & he had gave me hints that he may have already knew about the previous owners cat problem as he said they used a special cat urine solution in a steam vacuum on the carpet when he bought the house. any how, he has said he doesn't want me or my husband to live with that smell, so he had me call a carpet cleaning company to come check out the carpet. i did & the guy said that the only 2 things he could do is 1. basically do what i have been doing only using their steam cleaner & a pet & urine solution. or 2. pull the carpet up remove the padding, paint the wood underneath, replace with new padding, & steam clean both sides of the carpet then set the carpet back & tack it down. he said that he has no doubt it is in the padding or past that. he thinks the 1st option won't do the trick in all honesty, but he said he wouldn't advise having him do the 2nd option as it cost more than $750 to do that through the him, when the landlord could paint the wood & replace both the carpet & padding for the same price or cheaper.
so as of right now, the landlord plans to have everything pulled up, the wood painted, & replacing the carpet & padding. he isn't charging us as it is a preexisting problem. right now this is all pending as of right now as this house we r renting & living in is being foreclosed on (long story, the bank didn't keep records properly so now he is having to fight this). pending the verdict of that, if all is good & we still live here lol then he will fix this!
There's a product at walmart and target calls Kids N Pet that's an enzyme solution. You just let it soak in and dry and it breaks down the urine, then you clean up the enzyme and the resulting sugars and proteins the enzyme leaves behind.
Doesn't just work on Urine. It also works on blood, poop, and vomit. And according to the bottle, "Diarrhea". I can only attest to it cleaning up blood and vomit. It also cleans blood out of dog fur. I keep a bottle under every sink in the house.
Nature's Miracle!! It works GREAT! I just recently moved from a place where my chihuahua and corgi puppy destroyed the carpet while we were working on potty training. Buy a gallon jug of Nature's Miracle, I use the no more marking one, but they also have one specifically for urine, and pour a TON on each spot so it can soak all the way down. Its an enzyme product and it got rid of the urine smell completely. It didn't get rid of a few of the stains because they were already set in from steam cleaning the carpet. You have to just let it dry which can take up to a week. If that doesn't work, probably nothing will. I tried EVERYTHING on my carpets and that was all that worked.
only problem with using the enzymes is tha t it isn't just spots, it's the whole living room. which means if we did the enzymes we would need a whole lot & the whole room would have to b saturated. the previous owner's boat load of cats really did a number on the living room & then on top of that it has been years since. so bigger measures need to b taken
