We're very sad today to say goodbye to Old Dog, Monty

Many times on this site when talking about little Corgi Lilliput I have mentioned Old Dog. He is actually a fifteen year old Springer Spaniel named Monty, the best, lovingest dog we have ever had. Truly made of velcro. Mr. Diplomacy.

Monty has been on a slow decline, and we have now realized that his time has come. So tomorrow we will say goodbye to our old companion and best friend, Monty. Fifteen years ago he came to us when my grown children were all little boys. They are all now grown men. For fifteen years Monty has been our lovey pup, our snuggler. All the children who came thru this family first were enamored of the more exciting dogs, but soon came around to preferring Monty, who would cuddle them and listen to their problems.

Lilliput has been Alpha around here since the day she walked in. I'm not sure how much she will miss Monty, but I suspect that she will to some extent. She's never been alone. I've never been alone, either. We're all going to miss our Monty boy.

I'm sorry. This is such a painful experience to have to go through. My thoughts are with you....we had a Springer Spaniel/Golden Retriever girl that was a great dog too...
It's done now. Monty had his last car ride with his head held out the window (on my arm), and went to sleep at last. I called my three boys, who all reacted differently. The grandchildren and hangers-on called when their mom told them. I wish he could have held on til Thanksgiving to say goodbye to all of them.

We may take a road trip up thru Minn. to visit some dogs in rescue with our Lilli soon.

Tracy Ullman had a bit while on the Alley McBeel show, where she, as a psychologist, insisted that everyone had to have a theme song. My old beagle's was "It's good to be King" by Tom Petty. Old Dog Monty's was REM's "Stand":

Stand in the place where you are, now face north....
Your feet are going to be on the ground,
Your head is there to move you around...

He was always silly goofball.

Lately his song has been the Band's "Rocking Chair"

Hang around, Willie Boy,
Don't you raise the sails anymore.
It's for sure, that I've spent my whole life at sea,
And I'm pushin' age seventy three,
And there's only one place that was meant for me.

Oh, to be home again,
Down in old Virginny,
With my very best friend.
They call him Ragtime Willie.
We're gonna soothe away the rest of our years.
We're gonna put away all of our tears.
That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere.

Slow down, Willie Boy,
Your heart's gonna give right out on you.
It's true, and I believe I know what I should do.
Turn the stern and point to shore.
The seven seas won't carry us no more.

Oh, to be home again,
Down in old Virginny,
With my very best friend,
They call him Ragtime Willie.
I can't wait to sniff that air,
Dip'n snuff, I won't have no care,
That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere.

Hear the sound, Willie Boy,
The Flyin' Dutchman's on the reef.
It's my belief that,
We've used up all our time.
This hill's to steep to climb,
And the days that remain aren't worth a dime.

Oh, to be home again,
Down in old Virginny,
With my very best friend,
They call him Ragtime Willie.
Would-a-been nice just t'see the folks.
Listen once again to the stale jokes.
That big rockin' chair won't go nowhere.

I can feel something calling on me
I believe that old rockin chair's got me

And finally:

Fear no more the heat o' the sun;
Nor the furious winter's rages,
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages;
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney sweepers come to dust.

Fear no more the lightning-flash,
Nor the all-dread thunder-stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash;
Thou hast finished joy and moan;
All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee, and come to dust.
I'm so sorry for your lost Julia, Monty will be missed :(

I am so sorry about this news. It is comforting to read about people like you, who truly suffer for your great love of your dogs, when in contrast, other people in the world have no compassionate behavior towards animals.......loving people like you give so much and then your pain is that much more deeply felt........I know both you and Lilliput will grieve and I hope in time, there will be room for another little angel who needs both of you!
