Hey Everyone!

My name is Brittany, and I own a 7 yr old pembroke girly, Niea, who I compete in agility with. The problem is... I need another corgi in my life!!  and I am also looking for another competitive partner.

I am curious if anyone knows of an experienced corgi breeder who breeds for function over show quality? IMO, the american standards and the quality of lines I have seen so far, are exacerbating chest depth&shortness of leg, where range in motion is compromised. Thoughts?

Cheers!

I can understand your concerns about Pems getting too heavy and low, and I am also concerned that we may go too far in that direction.

On the flip side, there are quite a lot of top show kennels with heavily titled agility dogs coming out of their lines.

I have personally met the 2010 BIS winner from the National Specialty and I know her granddam has her MACH title.  My own male is very typey from some top show lines.  If you check out my pics from my profile page you will see that he is very heavy in front.  While I haven't competed (and recently quit for other reasons), we've been doing agility for over two years and he is fast, handy, and clean and never showed the least signs of being sore or ouchy from class, even when we did lots of A-frame or tons of grids in class.   And my girl is a retired show dog, also very typey (she finished in 8 shows) and out of her litter of 6, two are titled in agility

With so many show breeders also having agility people coming to them for pups, I am hopeful that we won't lose athleticism.  My dogs LOOK heavy and look like they'd be slow, but they can outrun any lab and I have had countless people comment on how fast they are.

So I would not discount a line just because they look a bit chesty in photos.  Check for agility titles coming out of the kennel, talk to some people who compete and see where their dogs come from.

Good luck!

Edit:  Here's a pic that shows how deep-chested Jack is; as you can see, it doesn't slow him down.

Here's a list of Corgis who have their Versatility Award for titling in at least three disciplines.  You can see lots of Ch pedigrees/dogs with agility titles after their names, and a few with performance titles at the beginning of the name.
