Torn ACL in rear knee?

Bunny tore the ACL in her left rear knee last Thursday morning. The vet recommended keeping her in a crate, confined to a small area and only very short walks on a leash etc. to see if it heals. So for the next two weeks at least, Bunny is sleeping in the crate to prevent jumping on an off the bed, being supervised when out of the crate in the house or on a leash in the yard.
We're also working on slimming her down asap from 38 lbs to about 23.

Learned my lesson with the jumping on and off the bed. Ramps will be part of our household from now on in the bedroom and front room.
Does anyone have any experience with ACL tears and ramp training?

My father in law's Pembroke tore the ACL in one of his hind legs while playing too rough. He ended up needing surgery to repair it otherwise the vet said it would never be the same and he was sure to develop arthritis in that leg. Since Sammy was only 3 years old, they went ahead with the surgery so he could do all the activities a young dog should. I'm sorry to say that the surgery set them back about $3,000, but his leg is a good as new if not better. The vet said once they injure one knee, the other is likely to cause problems down the road so it's important to keep them from jumping and playing rough games like frisbee or tug-o-war. Hope Bunny feels better soon!

Thanks Alice for the info, the reading I've been doing indicates that surgery is generally needed. We'll keep her quiet as much as possible and keep surgery in mind for the future. She's so perky and happy, luckily she is pretty good about keeping calm when needed.
