Hi Nancy,
Quincy started flyball last friday night. He's a natural at the what to do with the jumps. We'll see this week how much he likes the box. Have to figure out a way to introduce without startling him.... its a lot of fun!

Linus continues his lessons, boxwork, passing, dead ball retrieval and finally runs. The heat is excrutiating down here now! It is an hour drive west to Richmond on our only interstate, I-64. All Dog Adventures is excellent use of a defunct mid-sized manufacturing plant (the old outline of Virginia Plastic Pipe and Valve Co. is clearly visible on the brick). A full menu training facility, canine daycare and outside agility course - we would all love to have a place like this! So, Linus and I still drive on Friday evenings. It is hard to take just one dog because I would love to train Tasha too. She is a super brilliant corgi with extreme agility and herding skills. She's be a killer flyball dog. Everyone have a good week and corgi smoochies from Linus!

Last Friday, Linus had his fourth lesson, second semester. The K9 Kamikazes will be in a tourney in Manassas, VA this coming weekend. There will be no practice this Friday evening. This past weekend we began with the box work. That turn and all fours on the platform. It's sure tough for a long dog to get all fours onto that platform. We did more ball work and Linus had his moments. On recommendation, I did three levels of treats: Vermont Cheddar bits, real bacon bits and General Tso's chicken b its. I also fed Linus less than half rations before our hour long car trip to Richmond. Dad let me use the Explorer tonight and I felt safe with Linus in a crate in the back and a heavy duty Ford for the streets of Richmond! Be sure to post where you are in your lessons! We are excited to hear all your news! All the best and corgi smoochies from Linus and Nan

Linus had his third lesson, second semester, last Friday evening. Now we are working on ball retrieval, my moving away from him with cupped hand so he has a target in which to place the ball and continuing the "play" for at least ten seconds after the run so the dog always has incentive to hurdle towards. Most folks don't understand how tough it is to always be at corgi level! Fortunately, the flooring at All Dog Adventures is beautifully padded so you spend time on your knees. Mark made Linus a fabulous tug toy. I have been given some interesting literature to read on turns, treating, teaching tug, etc. Teresa said that she would bring her flip video to a lesson and we'd capture some of the sequences that are done at class. I'll try to load it onto this site! I can understand why some dogs require months of training and others (i.e., bc and Aussies) take ten minutes! Linus cheated at hurdles this evening, too. What a moocher....

We are now in our second session of flyball lessons. Linus would take all four hurdles this time without the use of gates to prevent him from skirting around the hurdles. Not that he was flawless in this regard but a marked improvement! There was more relay running Friday evening; platform work (it isn't easy for a short legged 36" long dog to turn like that but Linus is doing well) and learning how to tug. Obviously, I haven't found the tug prompt of his choice because he isn't interested. Other dogs love this extension of flyball play, go flying for their tugs but Linus comes to me and sits for a treat. I fed him only half rations before the lesson and am beginning to use happy praise in lieu of treats all the time.

Hi! I just signed Quincy up for a beginners class it doesn't start until beginning of June so I am here to learn more too :) I am already practicing different things with him, so hopefully we will be prepared for our first class.

This past Friday, we really kicked it up a notch! Linus actually took all four hurdles, we did "chase" exercises and had lots of laughs as Shine, an Australian cattle dog puppy, began her first lessons among us. The K9 Kamikazes competed the weekend before last near Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and earned lots of good points. One of the loveliest dogs, Rosie is 14 years old and has more than 35,000 points. She is grand champion among flyball dogs and we love when Rosie comes to hang out at the lessons. This group of people is wonderful and Linus, the fluffy corgi, has blossomed.

We have completed our first semester of lessons. We will begin the second term in two weeks. Linus has truly enjoyed learning flyball among these people, their dogs and at the wonderful All Dog Adventures facility in Richmond. The K9 Kamikaze team will be in Blacksburg, VA (Go, Hokies!). Canine flyball has contributed to my corgi's esteem, social skills and muscle memory. Linus also looks so damn beautiful going over those hurdles. I don't know if I am only writing to myself; but this training with a corgi is very rewarding. All the best from Williamsburg, VA: Nancy and Heronsway Land of the Hokies (a/k/a Linus).

Linus is making wonderful progress learning flyball! This past Friday evening, we worked on ball platform turning. Michelle, one of Linus' absolutely fave humans, was anchoring the platform while we practiced. During several passes, he would mount the box, stand on hind legs, front paws upon Michelle, and snout dive into her treat pouch! This week we are going to practice dead ball retrieving - which is the "nugget" of flyball in addition to the hurdling! One more week of lessons before we will begin our second session. This is too much fun!!

Here we go with more flyball lesson stuff! Linus is progressing very well, too, thank you. I know that he is really treat driven at this point and I will withhold them every so often during the lesson. For such a long dog, he is making pretty good contact with the ball box (you do want all four legs to touch the platform) and pushing back very quickly. The human has to move quickly and treat about eight feet away coming off the box. Anyway, Linus blew through four snipped Pupperoni's tonight! We are getting near the end of this session and I am thinking about bringing Tasha in on lessons. Maybe I should confine her to the herding lessons.
