The Allergy Epidemic

A group for dog owners, who may be at a loss about what to do with their itchy, allergy-ridden pooches. I think many of us have been there before and can offer support and answers for many allergy-related questions. Good luck...and Corgi's rule!

Lori,

I know you are a GOOD puppy mom!  You are concerned and trying to find the solution for Callie!

I want to offer advice on food; we have tried SEVERAL different kinds/types.  Our Jozi was getting sores on her tummy and she was licking her paws raw and chewing on her legs.  I tried so many things; the vet prescribed TOO many meds and I went along with it thinking it was going to 'be the trick'.  I finally did some research, started her on Merrick grain free food (after I contacted the company, asked for advice and asked for coupons and I got a response from the CEO via email with suggestions and coupons being sent to me in the mail).  Merrick is made in the USA and is family owned and operated with strict guidelines for processing only the best simple ingredients.  We also started an Antioxidant Omega 3 Fish Oil that we give her one pump at one meal each day and she LOVES it.  We are trying to fix her from the inside out instead of putting on creams and salves and giving more meds.

We never tried any allergy shots; I can't go that direction; I want to feed her good and try to avoid meds as much as I can.  I would watch the yeast/garlic tabs too.  Yeast is an issue with allergies and scratching.  I would also caution against using any shampoos that are oatmeal based; they are very drying.

Visit us at our blog someday!

Thanks so much,
CK

Callie and I are in a battle to beat her allergies! I just want to cry when she starts scratching! Does anybody have any amazing tips? One suggestion I have... would  be very cautious if your Vet suggests the allergy medicine "Atopica". I understand that  for those dogs that can take it is it's awesome but NOT Callie! Within an hour of her first AND only dose she vomited at the least 6 times and I was despairing of her stopping! Finally at 1 am I had to call our Vet! After she got it out of her system she was okay but I felt like THE worst dog Mom ever. I've given in twice now and let them give her 2 depo inj. but they only last 30 days each time and I just REALLY don't like going that way so any other advice would be welcome. I have changed her food, we've started allergy supplements to sprinkle on her food, a skin wellness supplement tablet and also yeast & garlic tabs...I'll be hoping for any advice anybody can offer...thanks in advance...
