My wife came home from the pet store with Trouble, Probably from a puppy mill. We did not know any better. After two years we decided to get a buddy for Trouble, That was Buster. We found him and his brother left in a shelter because thier ears did not stand up. After Trouble passed we rescued Misty. Then we heard of a Corgi to be put down on Monday. I got her Sunday afternoon. She is now very happy

Hi Juel, You asked about how I chose the breeder I am working with....

Last year I "discovered" corgis when I was researching which breed would be right for our family. I hadn't ever known one or even seen one, though I did manage to figure out YouTube to see some video online of them. I looked in the paper and found some for sale. I called them and talked to them about the puppies and corgis in general explaining that I wasn't ready for a puppy yet, but really was trying to learn about them. The family was terrificly nice and they invited us down to visit them. They had 2 8 week old pups left and we just fell in love with them....but didn't get one yet. I did learn that they were great folks who socialized their pups by having them inside and playing with them and doing all the right things. They weren't professional breeders that were showing dogs, just a family.

So, I started reading everything I could and chatting with professionals online, joined the corgi-L site and this one and learned more about puppy mills and breeders, etc. I did talk to a few breeders but couldn't afford the $900- $1000 price tag. So, I got back to the family this year when we decided it "was finally time!" to see if they had bred their female again.

They did and she has 7 pups that are red and white and tricolors. I am really comfortable working with them, but they aren't serious breeders. Their price is seriously lower too. I am looking for a pet, not a champion. I might like to do agility trials from what I read, so they'd have to be AKC registered. They are giving me first choice since we've been talking so long.

Be sure that the breeder you choose is easy to talk to and ask questions of. I think I can call these people to ask questions, but don't know that they have vast experience to share with me. I will turn to mycorgi.com site for support and help FOR SURE!

Feel free to email me at b.larkin@roadrunner.com if you have other questions. Always happy to help!
  • Carlie

Thanks! She is actually much bigger now and I need to update my pictures, but her coloring is still about the same, she still has her little birthmark on her nose. Good luck with your quest for a corgi!
  • Bill Gotthelf

Thank You. I think they are too.

  • Calvin

Hi Juel. Good luck with your Corgi search. I couldn't find any local breeders that had litters.
  • Karen & Bailey

haha thanks for the message! im glad someones looking at the pictures! =D yea hes growing up sooooo fast. =D enjoy the pictures! i dont know how long i can keep this up (pictures and at least a video every week!)
  • Karen & Bailey

yup enjoying the very nice cooler weather! =D haha. but if its not one thing its another, its so WINDY!!!!! haha but bailey doesnt mind, but me on the other hand... hair in my face telling him to go potty - i probably look like a monster! hahaha anyways, i was trying to get him to go potty this morning before i left for work, and of course today was garbage day so he was more interested in watching hte garbage truck and listening to all its sounds before going potty. he never did go outside. =T i leave him in a playpen area, so he did go on the potty pad - ahh! haha. yepp but we did fine today, he was super good while i was gone. =) i think he sleeps most of the time. hes as happy as ever right now. =P thanks for asking!
  • Wynne Phillips

Yeah, she does! Corgis are great, but my mixed breed is truly indestructible! She will (and has!) eaten almost anything with no ill effects! My corgi is a little more delicate.
  • Wynne Phillips

He and all of his siblings had a lot of black as puppies, but both of his parents were red & white, so we knew he would be. He still has some black hairs mixed in, though.

I know what you mean by "winning over the bf". I think it took randomly talking about corgis for a few years and very seriously for about 6 months before he finally caved in. BTW, thanks for the add!
  • Antoinette

A corgi will definitely keep you smiling, you wont be able to help yourself. =) We here at mycorgi.com will be waiting with open arms to welcome your new addition when you decide the time is right to bring him/her into your life. =)
  • PuKi

  • Christina & Vicki

    Hi Juel,
Thank you for the concern about the fires. We personally were not in harm, but our city Port St. John and 30 miles South of us Palm Bay had over 100 homes effected. It's very sad when you see people that have lost everything. I just read your thinking of getting another dog??? How is that coming along? I wasn't a dog person until I got Dingo (3 years ago ) and then my little Mia ( 24lbs little ) anyway, I love them to death. They have changed my life and bring me so much companionship and joy. I hope your able to get your dog soon. I'm sure we here at corgi.com will hear about it. Keep in touch :)
Vicki, Christina, Dingo and Mimi :)
  • Stephanie & Lola

Hi Juel!! No the beagle is not mine, it's my fathers. He is almost 2, but he has a rare disease and they don't know how much longer he has. So we try to go up and visit as much as possible :)
  • Remy and Maddy

    how about this?
  • Karen & Bailey

Oh nothing! Haha I was giving him some yogurt from the almost emptycontainer and and.. Well he just gets excited ans sticks his whole snout in licks the bottom - hahah he comes up with a smudge on his nose.. And can't reach it. =P

Hahaha he so does have that "whatcha looking at mommy" look on his faceā€¦ its priceless! =P

Graduation went super well. I should take him out for a celebration.. Or couldve baked him a graduation cake .. But those dog treat recipes call for the weirdest things like wholemeal flour and some weird sugar that starts with a "m".. Its all strange!
  • Karen & Bailey

hahha yea, that would be a good one.
man hes growing up way too fast!!!!!! I can't believe he weighs a hefty 19 lbs now! might take him to the beach this weekend if the weathers' nice! =)
  • ♥ AdEle

    Very nice meeting you ...
  • Charlie

Keep Rusty. Get rid of the boyfriend. LOL

GSD's can be a one-person dog, which means that your BF really needs to keep Rusty from grabbing your hand or trying to body-slam you out of the way.

My last dog was a tough-minded, dominant rottweiler who I only outweighed by 6-7 pounds. I never let any man rough-house play with him. Not only was the dog likely to try to overpower the guy, but it would have let the dog think that rough play with anyone (including me) was ok. The dog had specific rules. My rules. Never had a problem with him, but it would have been really difficult if I had a BF that didn't use the same training methods.

Maybe you could take Rusty to training on your own. A trainer could help you gain respect from Rusty. Then your BF might become the one who's picked on. Ha!
  • JENNY & COBY

    Coby was born in Salinas!
I still have their phone number!!
Also, i met one breeder yesterday in Hayward!
    Please, e-mail me ^^

Don't worry about stirring hornets on GoCorgi. Sometimes you do need combat boots and a pith helmet to slog through the arguments there. LOL Outside of the drama that the "moderator" often stirs up, you can sometimes find help or info there that you don't find here (and vice versa). So you're always welcome to come back and ask Q's or share stories. If not, I'll see you here! : - )
  • Tiffany Lynn Tenhoff

When do you think you will be getting you baby? I am so excited for you!! I just can't wait to see what you choose.
  • Shelby Hurst

    Thank you!

  • sandra

    hi,

where did i get kc---well quite frankly---sorta like a backyard breeder and actually i got her preowned...got her at 2 3/4 mo, only cuz the lady figured it was too much work so i got her as she needed her 3 mo shot....i wanted a girl corgi and she was a girl, simple as that...no discount, did not get to pic...

i want to get another corgi kid, a boy and have no idea how he is going to come to our family, but that time will come when it does!

    smiles : )

i get my first bite! (3 of 7)
  • Sam

Juel, I read your letter designed for the breeders and I must say that if it were my litter I would have some concerns. It appears that your home is one of great activity, quite a few animals, several children and a very demanding job. This often times leaves little time for a pup. It also appears that you are at a time in life that great changes may be coming about in the not too distant future. Another sign of caution for some breeders. As a short time breeder and very active rescuer I look at all these things when considering placement. This does not judge you as a person but more a situation which we see all too often that animals are surrendered to our program due to a sudden move, behavior issues because the family has no time, children arrive in the family, landlord issues and such. No doubt you are trying to plan well for an addition of your corgi. Visit the pembroke welsh corgi club of america and take a look. I believe there is a section about purchasing pups and what information you should be looking for. This may be far better then the current information you are asking. Good luck....there are many great breeders out there. I think a bit more information on your end and a different approach will help you immensely.
  • Furpants McGee

Thanks :) Actually going to Arcata to Aldergate Corgis. I guess Sylvia knows the breeder - Steve and is going to visit them this weekend. I'm soo excited, I can't wait!!! I feel as if I'm having a baby or something.
  • Furpants McGee

Cardis are actually rare in southern CA. I see Pems in the pet stores ALL the time, and once I heard there are Corgis with bigger ears AND long tail, I fell in love :) and started my search for a reputable breeder of Cardis (which was harder than I had anticipated). Steve was actually referred to me by the first breeder I was talking to, who was up in Oregon. We wanted a female, and the litter ended up with too few for us to get one. But, luck was on our side with Steve's litter :) And "Petunia" is just too cute for words...
  • Karen & Bailey

hehehe. =D thanks. yea hes getting that black mask! i hope it doesnt get too dark. in the sun you can hardly see it, but when its dark or dim lighted - it shows! yes hes still so cute. growing up so fast. hes already 23 lbs now! =) so hows your search going?
  • Maggie May

    Hi Juel,
Ican under stand your frustration with finding a corgi puppy.I have been searing for about a year and a half and started emailing breeders with a short request for info. I then would visit their websites, only to see waiting lists where you would only get second third and fourth pick. I also was looking for red and white. Finally, finally I found a website breedersclub.net and there was an ad for puppies just listed a few days before. I called that day, since they were all red and white and all available, and we drove 50 miles(Visalia) to get Maggie then and there! The owner had both the parents right there, four female pups and 1 male. The male had short hair and all the females were fluffy. I knew nothing about the coats until I looked up online after we got home. They're adorable, but their long coats are considered a flaw, and you shouldn't breed them and can't show them according to the AKC and PWCCA. I'm a bit disappointed not to have the option to breed her, as I have bred dogs before and loved it! However, I must say that Maggie is as cute as she can be and she's going tobe a wonderful companion. My garden buddy. It takes a long time, but when you finally find your pup you'll forget all about how hard it was to find! Best, Sue and Maggie
  • Rowdy & Matt

Oh yeah I wouldn't trade him for anything. Although I think about it sometimes when he likes to bite :)
  • Sylvia & Timmy

    Juel,
Oh my goodness, remember not to bring your wallet or credit card. Juel, you're gonna fall in love with one or all of those puppies. They must be even bigger now. I'm so jealous, wish I was going again. Do you have a camera?, you need to take another picture of Petunia for Fuzzypants, if you do. She would love it. She's flying up next Sat to pick her up and fly back down with her, same day.

I feed a no-grain food called Wellness Core. I would highly recommend the food to anyone. It is made with human grade ingredients. The offer two varieties, chicken based and a fish based formula. It seems pricey, but I feed less than when I fed other foods that had grains in them. There are several other no-grain foods out there which are equally good, Innova EVO, Natures Variety Instinct, Solid Gold "Barking at the Moon", and "Taste of the Wild" by Diamond. All of these are excellent, provide good nutrition, in a high Protein-low Carb food.

I also, rotate foods with Timmy. I believe that allergies develop over time and so rotate protein sources/foods. But Timmy has a cast iron stomach and after proper introduction of the new food has no problem. I like to think that he gets some sort of variety, like I do in my diet. The next food in Timmy's rotation will be something called "The Honest Kitchen", it is a dehydrated raw food. Only place around here that sells it is a Vets office up in Arcata. Eventually, I want to feed him raw and am slowly working my way towards that.
  • Sylvia & Timmy

    Great, you deserve the rest.
I forgot to tell you the name of the vet in Arcata. She's Dr. Sarah Green, at the Healing Spirit Animal Wellness Center, 145 "G" St., about a block off Samoa Blvd. I really want to go there and check out the food. Timmy is on a waiting list to see her regarding long term treatment for his arthritic right hip.
  • Furpants McGee

    lucky!!! I can't wait until I get up there....only 6 days! :)
  • Furpants McGee

you are an absolute doll...thanks for the pictures!! I'm soooooo excited!! she gets prettier by the day!!!
  • Furpants McGee

Well then, I'll have to make sure that I dont have anything in her area that she can stand on when I'm at work! I bought 2 baby gates yesterday to keep her in the kitchen/dining area during the daytime (vinyl flooring makes for easy potty accident clean-up!) I know I'm going to cry when I first hold her...I hope she likes me! I'm going through so many emotions...excitement and anxious about meeting her, worry she might not like me or be happy with us...sad about taking her away from her home she's known for so long...I have NO doubts about being sure she's going to be well taken care of...she's gonna be SPOILED!! :) :)
  • Furpants McGee

My plane lands at 11:10 am so after I get my rental car, I will probably be there around noon or so, depending on how big of a hassle it will be at Hertz...I'm JUST under the age limit to rent a car, but I have a credit card and a valid license, and pre-reserved one, so we'll see. I just know it's an extra $20 or so for the day. Can you believe that!! HAHA!! Jake laughed at me because he forgot that you have to be 25 to rent a car...which I will be in November, but it's funny to think that there's still something out there that I can't fully qualify for because I'm underage. :) I'll probably spend a bit of time at Steve's and I have some time to kill before my plane leaves back to LA at 5:55 so I was thinking of taking a scenic drive to the ocean with Abby. At least I will get to spend some quality time with her before getting her onto the plane. I'm hoping to maybe wear her out so she might just sleep on the way back.
  • Karen & Bailey

yea! hes getting big! but im glad to report, hes no longer gaining a pound a week. its more like 1/2 pound now. hes almost 26 weeks old - monday, and i just weighed him and he was 25 lbs on the dot. Two weeks ago he was a little over 24 pounds, so im glad hes not 26 pounds now! haha. =) hope your doing well. hes doing great except he's got slighty mooshy poo - trying the pumpkin thing right now! =)
  • Furpants McGee

yes, its true!! she is home now with us and its the best ever!! the kitties are being very wary of her, but she's been romping about and smelling the new smells...i will post a nice blog about the journey when I get to an actual computer on monday. she is just the best thing ever!!! :):):)
  • Furpants McGee

Hello!! How are you?? Let's just say, I do feel as if I've just had a baby because I'm completely exhausted every day! I've been late to work yesterday and today because Abby's just so cute I keep getting distracted while I'm getting ready for work! She and Ziggy are now friends...she was kissing him early this morning when I took her out for her potty break at 3:00. So we have 2 out of 3 cats that are cool with her now. Our girl kitty Kit Kat is surprisingly calm about Abby. She's usually the skiddish one who is afraid of everything, but she's being ok with her so that's good. Toby's just pissed off and I'm not sure he'll ever come around. He's such an old grump, he's pretty set in his ways and doesn't like to be bothered, and Abby being the inquisitive pup she is, she's always trying to smell him or lick him, and he will have nothing of it! But, Abby will need to learn there will be some animals that won't like her and so I guess it's a good lesson that she should be aware of other animals' boundaries.
  • Furpants McGee

She is a spunky one, I can definately say that! She's definately settling into her ways and it's funny because Jake's starting to slack on some of the rules...like crating her. We let her lay on the bed with us while we watch movies before we go to bed, but when it's lights out, she is supposed to go into the crate...he's starting to go soft but I'm being a stickler about it. She LOVES to chew on whatever she can and I just don't need to deal with that while I'm sleeping. She jumped the baby gate on Tuesday - I got a lovely call from Jake at 4:00 pm asking if I had put the gates up to pen her in the kitchen while we were at work, and of course I did...but yes, she jumped the gate, knocked it over and proceeded to romp in the living room, knocking over a large potted palm and dragging the dirt EVERYWHERE...chewed on the coffee table and a box of a gift I need to return. Oh, and she poo'd in the kitchen (which, I'd rather have her have an accident in there than on the carpet). BUT!! The best part is!! Like an a-typical husband, do you think he even started to clean the mess up?? Yea, no. He left it for me to clean up. *sigh* MEN!!!! ARGH!!!
  • Furpants McGee

I know, Jake pointed that out last night!! I took her to the vet after work yesterday to get her a monthly flea treatment and we decided to use Confortis - an oral, once monthly that also treats heartworm - but because of the weight restrictions of it, they wouldnt sell me the whole 6 pack because by next month, she might be over 20 lbs, and it would be a waste of $ to buy 6 month supply of the 10-20 lb pack...that really put things into perspective for me, that's for sure! Do you like her new sparkly hoodie sweater I got her? :) Jake just sighed when I brought it home, but at least it's blue, so he can deal with it. He doesn't want to touch her if she wears pink...stupid boy. Yes, if i learn how to train him I'll let you know. I've been told that certain bedroom acts will make a man do anything you ask, so I'll have to try that out with asking him to pick up the poop or taking her out in the middle of the night :P HAHA!!
