I own a small retail pet store in Washington State, and used to do Search and Rescue with my German Shepherd, Gabriel, who passed away suddenly in Feb. (He was happily bossed around by his Corgifriends, who miss him terribly.) I also have several cats, and two wonderful horses.
Surprisingly, everyone gets along fairly well... *grin*
My Pembroke Corgi is a rehomed/rescue dog, and I breed and show Cardigan Corgis.
Riley: My shop dog and constant companion, Riley was a puppy mill dog. He was dropped off at my shop when he was 12 weeks old; the person who bought him realized she made a bad decision to buy him, and couldn't keep him... He's a great ambassador for his breed, and also a great way to explain why you shouldn't purchase a pup this way.
"Simon Sez" aka Simon - my blue merle Cardigan Corgi. He is my number one photo-fella - he knows exactly what the camera is and he works it like any good model. He's an incredibly intelligent guy with a ton of personality and drive. You ask, he does, and he does it with style -- talk about a truly perfect gentleman of a dog.
"Caleb" - Our other show Cardigan Corgi, a red brindle male born in December 08. He struts his stuff in the ring; he likes to show off, and he likes to show. He's got a bit of an ego, I'm afraid, but he loves any and all dogs, cats, and random hamsters... and assumes they should just love him right back.
Temperance: Our new blue merle Cardigan girl and show/obedience prospect!
Tess and Rachel - Caleb's daughters and my newest show prospects!
Sorry it took so long to get back, but a new corgi pup is time consuming!
We're not going to Superzoo this year, but we're probably going to Backer next. We're up to our ears in product right now!
Thanks for your kind words on the website. That is our storefront, it is a lovely location that just fell into our laps. Robb and Dana(the owners) let me handle the website work. The logo was designed by a local artist. I think it came together pretty nicely!
No problem...hopefully you don't have to do double shifts for too long!
Thanks for the info on the boots. I was going to order one on-line and wanted to get the right size. I figure most corgis would wear the same size shoes (waist line could differ from corgi to corgi but feet are pretty much the same, right? ha ha).
BTW, which new logo did you end up choosing for your shop?
Thank You so much!!!!! : ) The picture of Lance with his football looking out the door is one of my favorites also. I need to add the picture of him wearing his Bears jersey with his football in his mouth! What are the differences you notice between the pem and cardi puppies?
Thanks so much. We are doing ok. This is hard because it is all still so new, but with time (and another dog one day i hope) we can make it through. I have two cats right now and we like to travel so my husband doenst want to get a dog, but I hope maybe next year I can get Riley JR
Greetings from Wenatchee! Oh my gosh you have a beautiful furry family. Thank God for people like you!
I cant get over how striking your Cardigan pup is. I love his coloring and gorgeous blue eyes. Thanks for sharing!
We live in Chicago, not too far from Lance (and Natalie). My maiden name was Shepard, so I noticed your name! Cookie is 10 months old and is our first dog; we have always adopted cats, then 2 girls, then another cat and now a dog!
"Wow... your dogs and your climbs are wonderful. I'd wondered how they might do in Search and Rescue... now I'm very tempted to give it a go!
Beautiful photos too. Ha, I voted for one of yours, I loved it. Not often you see Pems with tails either, gorgeous dogs. :)"
Alas, Gwynn & Al have tales, not tails. Someday, their Halowe'en costume is going to be Seattle Mountain Search & Rescue, but instead of a St. Bernard's brandy cask under their chin, they'll have a Starbuck's thermos (Seattle being the home of Starbucks).
Simon is a beautiful pup. he has stunning markings. How old is he? How old was he when his ears stood? We have a blue merle cardi that is 14 weeks old today. His ears are not up yet so we are getting ready to start taping. I saw that you mentioned the difference between Pembrokes & Cardigans and it's funny how different they really are. Many people think that the only differences the tail but they have totally different personalities and both are great. :)
PS: I love the pics of your cat with various critters. He/she must be very tolerant. :)
Thank you. Finnigan is actually exactly what we wanted when we set out looking for a blue merle Cardigan. We wanted one blue eye, not too much pink on the nose and we wanted him to have some larger black patches rather than all tiny black speckles. That was our ideal cardi but we knew odds were that is not what we would get. When he was born we knew he was our favorite and when his eyes opened to reveal one blue one we were thrilled. We love him we're lucky to have ended up with him. I have to remind myself of that when he's being a brat. :)
When I got home from work yesterday one of Finn's ears looked like it was trying to stand. It's kind of sticking out sideways but the outer edge is folding so I think we are still going to tape to avoide any creases forming. I don't even know if that is possible but all of th breeders I've talked to seem to believe it is so why take the chance. We've never had to tape a dog's ears so this will be an interesting experience. :)
My fiance's family has a Pembroke and he doesn't like Finn at all or any other dogs for that matter. Finn likes other dogs and people and you can tell he is more focused on his people than their Pembroke is. I like both breeds but I think I am more partial to the Cardigan. Finnigan learned come, sit, wait, down, shake and roll over all in a week's time. The fact that he "can't" learn not to hold the leash or the drop it command in general tells me the problem is more him not "wanting" to do it. Maybe I'll try your method and give him a command to hold the leash. That's a good idea!
I've never known a cat to be that gentle or one to be trusted with small animals. Dusty sounds like a great cat! :)
Hi Shepdog & Family! My Pem, Griff, has a German Shepherd sister and they make such a great pair. I love looking at all of your pictures! All of your dogs are beautiful :)
Thanks! Those ears are almost totally up. We only taped them 3 times and I think we will have to do it again. It's just the inner edge at the tip of each ear that wants to flop down making his ears look pointy. He's a cutie either way but I'd love for them to be totally up like Simon's. Simon is beautiful. :)
I really hope my cats will learn to love my new puppy I am going to get!I love the photo you have where your kitty has his paw under your pups face. Do you have any tips you can give me on how to introduce them?
Thanks a lot and Sion looks great too. What a web we weave when we try to show a dog. Greatly appreaciate the rescue dogs you took in. If only I had a big house and more property to help.
What kind of camera do you use? You always have such nice pictures. Between the reflecting eyes and the dull colors, it’s hard for me to get a descent picture with my cheapo camera. :)
Must be Simon? I had looked at Sharon's blue merles, but really wanted a female. I could not be happier than I am with these two pups. Figg has a really sweet personality and Newton is a little devil dog. There is nothing she won't grab and run with - if it drops on the floor, it's hers. My only problem is resisting the urge to get Figg's mother, Visa, from Notzmo. I had three dogs and think it better to stick with two for a while. Hard to split attention three ways.
Was looking through your photos, man those are some beautiful babies. And you take some really awesome pictures. Hope we do half as good when we get our Sami. Thank you they are a joy to look at.
The herding trials sound like so much fun. I'd love to see what Finnigan would do around livestock. :) Have you started showing Simon yet? You have quite the pair of Cardis. So adorable! I'm dying to know where Caleb came from. is he a Notzmo puppy as well?
I bet Simon will do well in the ring. That sounds like so much fun. I wanted to get into showing but it also sounded like a lot of money goes into it and that we don't have.
I almost got a blue merle from Notzmo back when Finn's litter was dying and I didn't think there would be a puppy left for us. Finn ended up making it and came home to us so things worked out after all but I've been thinking about where we would get another Cardi in the future since we would like to add a girl once Finn is older and we have a liitle more room. I'll have to keep them in mind for when that time comes. :) Did you pick them up or have them shipped? Which ones are Caleb's parents? Sounds like Caleb's personality is a lot like Finnigan's. He's the happiest, most energetic puppy I've met and it makes for a lot of fun. :)
I'm glad to hear having a puppy shipped was a good experience for you. I eorried how that might effect a puppy so I've been reluctant to renture to a breeder beyond driving distance. :)
I figured either Trucker or Dinah had to be in there somewhere. They share that same beautiful red brindle coloring.
Good luck in the ring with them. If you are ever in Az we'll come cheer you on. :)
Thanks for the comments on Captain. He will be 9 months on the 21ST. SO far he has shown on 5 weekends and had gotten 6 points so far. It includes 1 major so fay and then 1 point and 2 point. He got to visit with all three breeders in Oregon and they wanted to keep him and already want to make breeding plans. We love him and hope to finish him soon. Gets to to to the Oakland A's game Friday should be great fun. Again Thanks
You have some very adorable babies. I have always thought that all corgis were just the stuff. I would love to hear your prespective of the difference in the cardi and pemi. I know that some take this subject a little serious so feel free to email if you don't want to post. I have always observed the pemis as being slighly more hyper in a non calculated way and the cardis as real playful clowns, typically in a calculated this is going to get me some attention sort of way!! Love to hear your prospective...few people seem to have both breeds...
Thanks, I think he's really something too. His show career starts on Aug. 8th then the 21st, 22nd and 23rd. (He turns 6 months tomorrow). If you haven't owned a sighthound before, they are a different ballgame! Ibizans are wonderful, beautiful, loving and loyal dogs. But they were not bred to work WITH people and are very independent! If you ask them to do something, they will flip you off, and do what they want! I felt guilty leaving Ibizans and getting a Cardigan and the only reason I did was because my old knees can't RUN around the ring anymore. But I couldn't be more pleased with the breed I decided to go with. Jaunty is sooo willing to please! And I can actually let him off lead when we walk in the woods! Anyway, thanks for your nice comment. And keep me posted on Simon's and Caleb's show careers! I would like to ad you as a friend, but for some reason, my Blackberry won't let me ad friends anymore!?! Love your photos, such beautiful kids!
Thanks for your comments on Matt and Hilliary's blog. I gave up. I'm going to walk my guys down the deer trails and revel in the thought that I WAS RIGHT! And by the way I think their Corgi COULD be mistaken for a Cardi!
Geeze, two more things. I worked for 15 years for a woman that bred show Shepherds. Beautiful, smart dogs, but I liked the look of the German bred better. And, my brother has been an air traffic controller at SeaTac for 27 years. I love Seattle! The guys are waiting, gotta go!
