Currently I attend graduate school at Johns Hopkins for my degree in Clinical Community Counseling. I am working at three part-time jobs, two for the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County (Crisis Hotline worker, and a contractor for Voices Versus Violence) and one as the coordinator of the Rainbow Youth Alliance (an LGBT support group for teens 14-18, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville and funded by grants provided by Brother Help Thy Self, and other congregations in the DC Metro Area). I am also working at my internship at the Frederick Mental Health Association as a counselor in their Counseling Services Department.
In my spare time (what spare time?) I draw, paint, and get caught up in dorky hobbies (WOW, Magic, Ren Fairs... I would never admit to these in person... I am an undercover dork). I work out on my Wii Fit daily, and also talk a daily 40-90 min. walk with friends.
My partner (Devin) and I am searching for LGBT friends to make play dates with (for ourselves and the dog).
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Darwin is now 1 year old and is our favorite member of our house. He loves going on his 4-6 walks a day and has learned to sit, stay, "home", roll over, paw and dance. He has helped keep the neighbor kid from running in the street (good ole herding tendency) and enforcing the "no cats allowed on Daddy's desk" policy. His favorite friends in the neighborhood are Kanyon (the husky he likes to take walks with), Bella (the full-sized, 70 lbs. bull dog he wrestles with), Puffy (the Pomeranian he bounces on), his pack (Trixie, Max, and Conner- friend's dogs he goes on walks with), and his grandmother's pack (four jack russells, Sarge, Lady, Tiny, and Hedi). He has found a special place in his heart for herding chickens and loves meeting new friends. Let me know if you wanna set up a play date!
Welcome Ryan, Devin and Darwin!
Check out the Corgis and Fandom group, which is great for nerds and dorks like you and me ;-)
I like Ren Fairs too. I think we have a couple pics on my page from our local Ren Faire. Sid went and he was appropriately adored by all, even the Queen!
Believe me, you will truly love having Darwin in your home. Corgis simply radiate positive attitude and well-being. The only problem you may encounter is that ONE corgi may not be enough - they tend to "travel" in pairs.....or in packs!! :-)
That's so funny. Did you find the name Caden on the welsh name websites? Darwin is an equally awesome choice. He is soooo cute! The only dog park we've been to in MD is the one off of 270 and exit 8, the King's Farm Dog Park. It's nice,.. we've met up with a few fellow 'mycorgi' corgis. Love to schedule something, especially once it gets warmer... but it's suppose to rain this weekend :-( ~Cindy
Sounds great. Bethesda has Strut Your Mutt, on a Saturday in May, no official date yet, but I'll let you know. I hope Caden and Darwin will meet before then. :-)
Hey, I've lived in Gaithersburg for about about 14 years now it seems. I've lived in Rockville for 3. How about you? Darwin (named after the famous naturalist, I presume?) looks cute, do you come to the Kings Farm dog park? There are some other corgis in the area and I'd love to have a big play-date!
Hey Ryan! Just thought I'd drop a note to a fellow MD corgi owner (I live in Silver Spring). Darwin is adorable (and was actually what I wanted to name my own corgi before the name Dexter was agreed upon :-) ).
What a little cutie-pants Darwin is! I love the shot of him sleeping in his crate on his back. And that little nose of his is adearable. Your pictures are great. Thanks for sharing them!!
In reply to your potty training comment on elementary corgis:
We live in the third level of our apartment building without an elevator. First we found going up the stairs was easier than going down the stairs. So at first we carried him down, and when we went back up we'd stand about 2 stairs above him and give him a LOT of encouragement as well as a little treat on the third step. Once he got there we praised him like he had done the greatest thing in the world. Then we'd pick him up and bring him upstairs... we did this until he could get up one flight. Then we did it a flight at a time. We did the same thing to get him downstairs. We'd put a treat on the third step down and sit and wait for him to make his decision. We'd use the lowest flight (they can see through the steps and that's what scared him, or so we read).
Potty training, after awhile got terrible to go up and down all the flights of stairs, and my fiance's and my schedule is the same so we weren't home when he had to go. We have an x-pen and we opened it up to the patio, so he had his x-pen inside and the patio on the outside. The patio is only about 8x9. When we came home, we picked up all the poo and washed it with bleach. Once he was old enough to hold it until we got home, we restarted going outside. Now we take him out three times a day. Once right when he gets up, once before we leave and once when we get home. We also don't give him water or food after 7pm, that helps when we're too tired later on to go outside.
That's great! When are you coming through? What kinds of things do you like to do? Just need a bit of info so I'd be able to give you ideas of things to do in Portland...lol. It would be awesome to meet up! Are you flying or driving?
Hey Ryan! Since the MD corgi group's leader has let the group fend for itself, we've created a new group so that Corgis in the DC/ MD area can meet up and stay in touch!
I can't believe how big Darwin is getting!! He looks like a more sophisticated, regal, and refined Dexter. We're up for a play-date whenever you want. You just pick a place and a time and we'll be there!
Love all the pics. Thanks for posting. And I can't remember if I sent a message or not, but i'm collecting data for my master's thesis, if you get a chance, check out the forum: http://mycorgi.com/forum/topics/dog-ownership-and-health, I need a few more dog owners to take it, and I'd greatly appreciate if you guys have a chance to take it. I need non-dog owners as well, so feel free to pass along. Thanks!
