She was afraid of the water for a long time, so I worked with her almost every day. Then one day she voluntarily went into the river. My daughter yelled "Look, mom! She's swimming! She's swimming! Wait.... where's she going?" She swam across the river! We had quite a time getting her back.

Sam, as you know already, all dogs can swim, but she had never been near the water and, being a very timid dog when we got her, she was scared. My oldest daughter and I took her to the river once or twice a week. We'd wade around in the shallow water and gradually she became willing to stand in a couple of inches of water. She still looked really nervous. Then we'd carry her just a few feet away from shore and then put her down in the water so she'd swim back to shore. Then we'd throw a stick into the water for her to fetch and every once in a while purposely throw it into water over her head. Finally we waded out and called her to us and she swam out to us. And then the famous day when she went in on her own and swam across the river. Now she likes to go in and swim.

That is awesome! Could you share with us how you trained her to swim?
