The american basset is a mixture of both french bassets(such as my dog)and english bassets/beagles/bloodhounds.
In my basset book, they say that the Artesien Normand also contributed to the breed after all this crossing, and has had a great influence on what the breed has become today.
The Artesien is a hunting dog, and is used to hunt deers and smaller animals. Here in Norway, both bassets and beagles are primarily sold to hunters and seldom as family dogs.
A question for you: how does the american basset look like? I think I only have seen the british version.
Interesting Basset. What differentiates it from what the Americans consider a Basset? Truly curious. As a trainer I see so many different dogs. This is a new one to me.
