I have a Nikon D60 -- I love it. Honestly, there's very minimal difference between the D40 and the D60, and you can find a D40 out there for a decent price. The only thing I will say is that it's bulky and heavy, so it's not the camera I like to use when I'm hiking or riding the horses for long distances; I have a little pocket-shot camera for those times.

But for a lot of close up, and action photos with the dogs and scenery - it's an awesome, lovely camera. The VR lenses are a bit pricey, but I do love the fact that they stabilize automatically. I shoot a lot off the hip sometimes, and while I do have a tripod, it's sort of one more thing I hate to carry unless I know I'm going to be there for a while shooting, or if I'm sitting and doing some wildlife shots for a few hours.

Gosh you really have some great close-up action shots. What kind of camera are you using?
