A small mountaintop in the midst of a huge, hot wildfire -- 5? 10? years old. Few of the dead snags have fallen yet, and few new trees are sprouting. This area gets very dry in late season -- as it is now -- and fires burn hot. When we get home, there will be about 100 wildfires burning in Washington, mostly lightning-strikes, but some caused by foolish humans like the ones whose unextinguished campfire we put out the previous day (!). The woods were desert-dry, and there was no need for a campfire; the weather was warm, even on the summits.
