Sept. 2010. Night 4. Halfway. Wet, cold last 3 days. Al has never seen a fire before. Fires are generally a no-no in the wilderness -- too messy, smokey, usually not enough wood -- but this is low-elevation in a major floodplain with abundant driftwood, nobody near to mind the smoke -- and we were cold and wet. Al is warming up to the idea.
Don't try this at home, kids; this is way too big a fire. We burned it to ash and left no trace.
The floodplain here of the Suiattle River valley is 100 yards wide and not unlike the blasted zone around Mt. St. Helens. Sandy volcanic ash from Glacier Peak. No trace left of the major bridge here that washed out in 2003.
