New Dog Equals New Concerns

My husband and I just adopted a 5 year old Corgi (Archie) from one of the local shelters. He is a really sweet guy and we love him so much!However, he weighed in at the shelter at just under 50 lbs! I could not believe it! He doesn't look that big but I have never owned a corgi before. He is 12 inches tall and about 30 inches long (he was wiggling when we did the measurements).How concerned should I be? Also, what is the best course of action to take to help him shed so pounds? I don't want him…See More

About My Corgi(s):
Archimedes (aka Archie) is a 5 year old Cardigan Corgi (black and white) we adopted on August 12, 2009. He is very well behaved and fun to be around. His favorite thing to do is play fetch with his toys. He also like to have staring contests with my cat Merlin.

Welcome Archie! Last year we babysat an older corgi for 4 months and had to be careful about her weight. At her evening dinner we mashed about a quarter cup of sodium-free canned green beans in her dish, topped it with a modest amount of her kibble and a spoonful of wet dog food. We took her on two 30 minute walks a day. She is now 15 and in good trim! Archie looks good, and Cardis are allowed a few more pounds! So glad he is with you and he'll enrich your lives!
