About My Corgi(s):
When our dear, sweet, funny Bichon died suddenly last Thanksgiving, it broke our hearts. We thought about getting another puppy to keep our elderly Shetland Sheepdog company because she was missing Bo so much. When spring came I decided to check out a pet adoption at the local pet store. That's where I found Zooey! What a cutie he is.

Our neighbor has a Corgi and a good friend of mine in Asheville has the BEST dog, a Corgi also, that's a therapy dog. So, when I saw those ears and that smile, I went straight for him. Unlike the other dogs there, Zooey knew "sit" and walked very comfortably on a leash. He wasn't too friendly with the other dogs, though, and that bothered me. I took him home to meet Gracie, our 13 year old Sheltie. He was very sweet and patient with her. That's all it took!

I think he looks like a Corgi-Beagle mix, but my husband thinks he's more of a Corgi-German Shepard mix. At PetSmart, one of the trainers asked if he was a Shiba Inu, which I'd never even heard of and we watch Westminster every year.

It doesn't matter. He's mine. He loves me to death and follows me everywhere I go. He knows when I pick up my pocketbook that I'm leaving and insists on going with me. When he can't go, my husband holds him up to watch me leave in the car and waves to me. That seems to settle him down. I think he's afraid I won't come back. I think his previous owners left him chained up outside a lot.

My only issue with Zooey is that he cannot be trusted outside without a leash or hooked to a lead (which I ONLY do when I'm outside with him). He will take off on an adventure in the woods near our house or follow anyone walking by. And he does not come back until he's good and ready. Is this a common trait for a Corgi? I worry that he'll get lost or hurt.

So that's the story of Zooey so far. He's been a member of our family since Easter of this year (2010) and I've found my new best friend.

Welcome Tere and Zooey!
Yes, that wanderlust is a corgi thing. I can't trust Sidney off lead either, and he's well trained and a therapy dog. It's the same way with beagles: I have 2 friends with beagles and they will follow a scent and be off in a flash.
