They pretty much hate the crate at first. Some like it, but most I have known hated it. Once he gets potty trained and goes outside like a good dog, you can let him nap and leave the kennel open while he sleeps and when he wakes he'll go out and explore. mabye start playing closer to it, and put treats in it, and pretty soon he'll love it again.

woot! my corgi peeing like a pro!
i leave his crate open and put pads near his crate. he just runs around and when he needs to pee he pee on the doggy pads. but i think i locked him too much when i go to school, he wont go in the crate by him self.

If you don't have time to take him out to pee, are you going to have time to take him out for play and exercise when he's older? He'll need quite a bit of exercise for his health.

Anyway, if you do plan of having him potty inside the house his whole life, then he needs a small kennel, just large enough to stand up, stretch out and turn around in. Put his sleeping kennel inside a large puppy playpen like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FLF89W/ref=nosim/?tag=pricegrabber2-pet-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B000FLF89W&linkCode=asn

Inside the puppy playpen, put pee pads or the dog "litter box" that Jason suggested. You'll want the "pee area" as far away from his sleeping crate as possible.

something i forgot to add. i always wish i could have trained my dog to urinate in a kitty litter style thing for dogs. google it up. should be fun if you can't be there with your puppy all day.

I don't necessarily think he's a bad puppy. that's what puppies do naturally. your puppy won't know what to do automatically, they're hardwired to do what it's already doing, as owners, we're sorta reprogramming the dog.

for now, next time he pees, rub a puppy pad on it then clean that area thoroughly along with any other areas he previously soiled. Leave that "used" puppy pad out next time you let him out of his cage...errr...crate. read thru a couple websites and some books. Lots of great info there. PS. i too would growl and bite someone if they wanted me to pee where i sleep. good luck. friend!

Potty training could take 2 days to 6 months yes. I believe that the actual training part takes a short period of time such as Corgi = 2 weeks max, but then breeds like the Afghan Hound could take 2 months. The issue taking so long is bladder control, the little puppies developing bladder simply cannot hold it and sometimes he wont be able to let you know he has to go in time. It is said the age of your puppy in months plus 1 is how many hours he can last without an accident (and this is assuming he is in his kennel where he really doesnt want to pee). If it were in a wider space he might pee somewhere then continue playing on the other side of the room. Just like people, we dont really want to hold it, we just learn to go at the best times.

Hi Mike,
Your puppy is still very young. To train him you need lots of love and patience. You need to be firm too. Train him step by step. Try not to teach him too much in a day. I read in a book that potty training takes something like 6 weeks to 6 months. To succeed, you need to train him everyday and consistantly.
Enjoy him and best of luck!

Dogs should not pee/poo where they sleep, and since he sleeps in the crate, he won't. You don't want to encourage this because it's a hassle to clean up, plus it's unhygienic. My pup is 10 weeks old and he is hyper and a big nipper as well (see my aggressive biting/nipping discussion).... but I learned a lot of techniques from other people on this site, plus my vet gave me a good method and I am ALREADY seeing improvement and it's only been a few hours. As for peeing/poo... take the dog outside frequently, like James suggests. We have had Blaze only 3 days now and he's only had one accident in the house. Just know when the pup is likely to pee (after eating, after letting out of the crate, etc.)-- be super observant of the dog's cues, and always take the pup to the door to be let out immediately after opening the crate door.

Good luck...
