Hi all,

I just finished reading a post that talked a little bit about limping in corgis, but my situation is a little bit different, so I thought I'd post it as well.

Buckley is a very happy and active 2 year old corgi. We started noticing that after he'd been resting for awhile, or first thing in the morning when we get up, that he would be limping on his hind left leg. Because he is so active, we thought that maybe he'd pulled a muscle, but it didn't really make sense with the fact that after a few minutes of limping, the limp would disappear and he was back to his normal running and non-limping self. Buckley does jump on and off of the couch and chair, but he is so fast that it's impossible to catch him all the time before he jumps.

We are taking him to the vet this week, and I've emailed the breeder to ask her if she has any advice/experience with this issue. I guess I was wanting to know if anyone else had gone through a similar situation. Right now, his limp is worse after he has been lying/sitting for awhile, but today I noticed that the limp lasted for a longer length of time than it used to. We used to go on long walks, but this week I have reduced the walks to around our small block as I was afraid of making things worse.

The internet has made me paranoid with all of the possible disorders/injuries that may be causing this limp. Buckley doesn't appear to be in pain as he continues to want to run and play and take walks. Any ideas as to what this could be?

We just got back from the vet a little while ago, and we are soooo relieved! The awesome vet did a really thorough check on his back, hips, knees, and all four legs. The only time Buckley showed any discomfort at all was when she was prodding around his knee on the leg he'd been limping on. Even then, it was just him turning his head to look at her like "what're you doing?". She quickly ruled out any hip issues, and determined that his knee-caps weren't sliding around at all. It's her opinion right now that he's strained a muscle or pulled a tendon. She gave us some anti-inflammatory pills for him, and told us to keep an eye on him. If it's not improved/gone in two weeks, then we'll start investigating more serious options. She seems very confident that it's a simple injury, and given how extremely rambunctious our corgi is, I don't have any trouble believing it! The other day at the dog park, he decided not only to climb on top of a picnic table, but to leap off the top of it superman style--he's so flippin' fast that I couldn't get to him in time to stop it. The next two weeks of reduced activity should be 'fun'...wonder how we'll get him to agree to it? In any case, we are just extremely relieved that for right now, it's an easy fix. Thanks again Sylvia & Timmy for your sharing of your experiences--hope that all is well with Timmy!

Believe me, I know! It's always harder with pups cause they can't tell you where it hurts. Also, they try so hard to do all the things they love and when they wince or cry out, your heart just breaks.

Thanks for your responses -- I appreciate the time you took to give me reassurance and advice. The hardest part is the waiting to find out what the problem is -- it's hard not to worry that it's something really serious. We just hate to see Monsieur (that's his nickname that we actually call him by most of the time!) in discomfort. Thanks again....we'll keep you posted!

There are many things it "could" be. Best to limit his activities, work hard to disallow any jumping and see what the vet says. Do know that x-rays are a good possibility. Best of luck and hope the findings are of little concern.

FYI You know that could be why your post, didn't show up on the "latest activity" log on the right side of the page.

After I sent a response to your post, I got a message that said that it must be approved before being posted. Must be something with your settings. Don't know if you got it or not.

Buckley's folks,

It could be so many things. I can sure empathize with you. I'm currently waiting for a radiologist report on Timmy's right rear leg. So far everything points to mild arthritis in his right rear hip (not enough to cause the limp) and some swelling in his tarsus area (that was done with a followup x-ray without anesthesia). After all this it could simply be a muscle pull or sprain, but other more serious things are being eliminated first. (A very good reason to have insurance, currently the bill is $450 and counting)

The vet probably won't be able to get a clear "picture" of what is going on with his rear leg until he/she's taken an x-ray and for that Buckley will have to be anesthetized. So be prepared for that suggestion. Then, unless your vet feels confident, the x-ray should/would be evaluated by a radiologist.

I'm sure, like me you've thought of all the possibilities, ACL tear, hip dysplasia, arthritis and of course more serious issues. Chances are it won't be anything serious. However, until you get a final diagnosis, I would restrict his activity (I know how hard that is!!!!), give him an anti-inflammatory, one 81mg dose of a safety coated aspirin with his dinner meal and see if that helps. Corgis are very stoic and won't let a little pain stop them, that's why it's good that you're reducing his activity level. Keep up the good work!!

Good for you to contact the breeder, I've done the same thing with Timmy. (I'm sure the lady is tired of me!!) I was checking to see if any of his siblings had the same issue. Actually she appreciated the calls, even though she no longer breeds.

Please keep us posted on his status, and feel free to ask more questions. Timmy and I will send you good vibes from Northern California and hope all goes well for our pal Buckley.
