At first glance, Gizmo might not look like your typical service dog. Maybe that's why people frequently ignore the "Please don't pet me - I'm working" sign she wears in public.

The 8-year-old Welsh corgi is less than half the size of standard service breeds such as golden or Labrador retrievers and, unlike the stereotypical assistance animal, she doesn't guide the deaf or the blind.

"We're all familiar with guide dogs for the blind," said Gizmo's owner, Lincoln resident Judy Guiraud. "But a service dog is any animal that can mitigate something for you that you can't do for yourself." ..DETAILS

Wow, Tank is awesome! I actually met someone yesterday who has a bichon frise who's also a psychiatric assistance dog, he was so calm and adorable. What does it take to train a dog to be a psychiatric assistance service dog? Just curious about various "career option" for Bryson :)

My dog Tank, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi/Blue Heeler Mix is a Psychiatric Assistance Service Dog for me. I'm not blind, deaf nor visibly disabled or impaired. However, I do have PTSD from having served with the Army National Guard in Iraq. Tank helps me to feel as comfortable as possible when I'm out in public. It does get aggravating at times when we run into people who still feel that a Service Dog is only for the blind or deaf.

Tank also has his CGC certificate from the AKC and is a Delta Society Therapy Dog. He really enjoys visiting the residents in the assisted living residences we visit. He's a very, very special dog.

What Gizmo can do is very impressive! A couple weeks ago when I was on crutches I swore Bryson's going to become a service dog. ("Don't just stare at the door, do something pleeeeez!")

By the way, thanks for posting these interesting little news clips about corgis, they're always fun to read!
