Big Day Tomorrow + First Vet Appointment

Tomorrow is the big day! We get to pick up Bear (aka Kuma). We've been preparing ourselves for this day for nearly three months now and have been preparing our newly-moved into apartment for two weeks. It feels like there's still so much to do before our flight takes off at 6:55 from Sacramento International. We land in Ontario International (Southern Cali) around 8:30, will rent a car, drive to PetSmart, pick up a crate, cover the back seats with trash bags, sheets & towels (in case of accidents), pick up our puppy, then make the 6.5 hour drive up to Sacramento! I've already packed my carry-on with Kuma's collar & leash, a portable water bowl w/water bottle, portable food bowl, two toys (puppy kong & plushie chew toy), a small bag of treats, poopie bags, digital camera, towels/sheets, portable GPS, addresses... hope I'm not forgetting anything.

We're so excited that the day is almost here! Just so excited to have a little bundle of love romping around and being a super-awesome puppy. We hope that all goes well and Kuma doesn't hate us too much for making him ride in a car for 6.5 hours

I've already scheduled a Vet appointment for Kuma for next week Friday. Interestingly, when I told the Vet technician who took my appointment & information that Kuma's already got two sets of shots at 9 weeks old (he makes 9 weeks tomorrow), she said that they may still give him his shots all over again! Was I misunderstanding her? She claimed that shots are often times given too young and the shots may not mean anything at all - though in the end, because I was VERY concerned with what she was saying and I was asking about a gazzilion questions, she told me that the Veterinarian would have to look at his paperwork and then decide what would be best for Kuma. Is this a normal course of action for puppies - for early shots to mean "nothing"? Is it abnormal for puppies to already have two sets of shots this young? Is this something that a breeder shouldn't be doing or is it a varies-depending-on-your-opinion kind of thing? I would hate to think my breeder has done anything irresponsible... she's been so great! I know that when we get Kuma tomorrow, the breeder is giving us a bag of food, a toy, his paperwork (including medical history) and of course, our puppy. Any past experiences or knowledge would be very helpful!

I'll post more (with pictures) soon!

Congrats!!!! Safe travel! Kuma will probably sleep most of the way. Be sure to get a cover for the back seat. PetSmart has them and their waterproof and washable. I have one for the Honda and it's a godsend! There are vets who won't accept breeder's vaccinations. They can sometimes give them too early. So you're vet will decide if giving the shots over is best. I wouldn't be concerned. It's SOP. Enjoy KUMA. We can't wait to see all the pics and videos!

True enough that at a very young age vaccinations are not that effective. Young pups are born with the immunity of their moms. As vaccinations begin it takes time for the body chemistry to change and the pup to become truly protected. Most vets I know recommend giving vaccines every three weeks until the pup is four months of age. There are core vaccines, those that protect dogs from typical diseases then there are vaccines they may be specific to your geography and the environment the dogs are kept. Usually a rabies vaccine is administered at 4 months of age. My youngest was purchased from a breeder/vet and had her vaccines at 5, 8, 11, 14 weeks and a rabies/parvo at 17 weeks. There are many different beliefs regarding vaccines. Hopefully you have a vet you feel confident with and a breeder that knows her dogs well. Good luck with your new baby.

Penny had already been given one set of shots when we picked her up at 8 weeks old. Our vet didn't say anything about it when I gave her a copy of the paperwork that showed the shots she had already received.
