Sandy is a 6 year old female and has experienced a barrage of medical problems in the last two years. She herniated two disks in her back and had back surgery a little over 1 year ago. Luckily she recovered and is doing well although she has lingering nerve damage in one rear leg. Since her surgery, she has 5 urinary track infections. Her most recent diagnosis was this past Friday. It seems that she cannot go 3-4 months without experiencing a UTI. In two weeks (after the antibiotic course) we will have her X-rayed for possible kidney stones.

Does anyone out there have a corgi or another dog with similar problems? What was the diagnosis? If repeated infection was the culprit, what steps did you take to minimize UTI occurrence?

Thank you!

Mandy has not had a UTI, but I am aware that female dogs can get them easily, so I have "Berry Balance" by Solid Gold. I get it where I buy her food. It is a powder you put in their food and mix it in. It is supposed to lower the Ph.

My parents female corgi always had infections on and off. They would put a little bit of cranberry juice in her water. I will call them later for more info.

I will echo Sam. Cranberry extract is used by lots of folks including me, when I was having a few, some years ago. There's also something I heard recently where the shape of her urine discharge area is being hooded by a layer of fat or muscle and causing the number of infections. The person I talked to had surgery to correct the problem, but otherwise had to wipe the affected area several times a day. Your vet should look closely for the cause of the infections.

I have not personally experienced chronic conditions but I will gladly share what I know. Often times vets use the same antibiotic repeatedly and the infection appears to clear but doesnt. If they have not actually "cultured" the infection then that would be my next step. Some bacterias are far more sensitive to some antibiotics more then others. You may also try adding vitamin C to her diet. Some folks also get cranberry capsules from the natural food stores. Encourage good water consumption and try to give her regular outings to urinate. Best of luck!
