So... I've been to the vet 4 times in the past week. The first time was for Scout and Bindi and their flea problem. Then, Bindi threw up about 20 times for (I think) eating something she should not have eaten in the backyard. Next, Scout is peeing blood and cannot control it. So...

1) Bindi is better, but she is still itching and biting herself like crazy. But... no more vomit.

2) Scout is still biting and itching a lot. I keep finding fleas on both of them and have given them a bath and then flea meds twice this month. My vet got me to try Vectra 3D, but it doesn't "really start working" until a few months. I don't know if I really want to wait that long. What flea meds work best for your corgi(s)??? Oh yeah, Scout got tapeworms from ingesting one of the fleas, but that was an easy fix.

3) Scout has been given many tests to see what the blood is due to. He was given injections at the vet and that stopped the blood coming out after a few hours. But, he has been peeing a lot more than usual and usually with maybe a drop of urine (sometimes nothing) coming out. I took him back to the vet after a couple of days and they figured out that his urine is extremely diluted and his body is lacking the hormone that changes this level. So... there is actually not anything wrong with his kidney that we can see... no kidney stones or malfunctions (he is only 1.5 years old). The vet thinks he may have diabetes. Has anyone with a corgi experienced this?? They told me to start feeding him Hills Presciption Diet K/D, and he likes it a lot. Also, I can't give him any table food because of the high sodium levels he has...

Does anyone have any idea of what else I could do to help him? We're going back to the vet next Tuesday to recheck his urine, to see if the new food has started to make a difference. Sorry this was so long, but if you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated!!

I have a Corgi with an incontinence problem and a MyCorgi member gave me an article that included a suggestion to use corn silk as a supplement to help. I've been reading a lot about it and it might provide some relief in your situation as well. There seem to be a number of urinary benefits to the corn silk. I don't believe it relieves stones or urinary crystals though. Grain free diets seem to have a beneficial impact on urinary issues as well. I have to admit I have no personal experience,..yet, but there was quite a lot of literature out there on the topic. I will be using corn silk and starting Fern on a grain free feed to address our issues. Hopefully with success. Good luck

We had a sheltie that had bloody urine due to bladder stones. Months and hundreds of dollars later it was discovered he had Cushings. We lost him last October and are still heartbroken. Have they checked his liver readings? Casey was almost 13 and had the the type of Cushings that would not respond to treatment. Your dog is very young but they can get bladder stones at any age. The stones or even crystals can block the urine flow and cause blood and alot of pain.

Hi Robyn,

2) If I was in your situation, I would take one day to bomb the home, make sure you switch off all electricity before you leave and take your dogs with you. Read the instruction on the package carefully and follow them. When you return, open all windows and air out the toxic stuff. Actually the meds do work, it's the flea life cycle that you want to break, keep at it, it takes about 2-3 weeks to completely break the life cycle.

3) Age have nothing to do with kidney disease, I would get a second opinion from another vet. Also the diabetes claim doesn't sound quite right, if possible, get the blood work result from the vet, make a photocopy and bring it to the other vet for confirmation. Diabetes is the malfunction of the pancreas.
