Yesterday was hilarious. My husband has a 4-year-old male lab (Hank), who resides at the in-laws while we settle in and finish our home, and I've got a 4-yr-old Pembroke (Cricket), who lives in the house with us. The other day DH bought Hank one of those monstrous bones that actually come from a cow to chew on. Hank was entertained for hours on end while he visited us, but Cricket was terrified he would eat her food, so she gobbled it up within minutes of Hank's arrival. I told DH to move the food to the laundry room for future visits of the step-dogs, where neither could gobble it up.

Anyway, DH returned Hank to the in-laws', and I brought the monster bone inside so the yard dogs wouldn't carry it off and bury it. Cricket was smothered with affection that night, especially since she was so miffed about Hank's presence in HER house. DH and I didn't think anything of it.

The next day (yesterday), I was putting away laundry when I heard DH and Hank bounding through the front door. BIG mistake. That bone was right inside the door, and I suppose Cricket had been chewing on it. I heard her growling at Hank, then all hell broke loose. Apparently she ran to guard "her" bone (it is HER house, after all!) and Hank ran over to see what she was doing. Cricket actually lunged at his face, biting him. Now don't get me wrong, Hank had every right to put the little one in her place, ( which he did ) But I just couldn't help admire my Cricket for standing her ground and standing up to the big bad dog... she gets it from her mama!
